Soybeans are the most concentrated source of isoflavones, a type of phytoestrogen (estrogen-like compounds found in plants) with antioxidant properties. The two primary isoflavones in soy are daidzein and genistein. Some research suggests that consumption of the soy isoflavone genistein might negatively impact hypothyroidism, which is why you may have been advised to avoid soy. 1/2 cup of edamame (the green soybeans) have 6.2 grams of Net Carbs.
The following is a list of legumes with approximately 10 grams of Net Carbs per serving 1/3 cup lentils 1/3 cup kidney beans 1/3 cup black beans 1/4 cup navy beans 1/3 cup lima beans 1/3 cup great northern beans 1/3 cup chickpeas 1/4 cup fava beans 1/3 cup pinto beans |

In line with this:
Take your thyroid med on an empty stomach, wait one hour to eat, or two hours AFTER you eat, NO: calcium or iron for at LEAST four hours away from your med (some say six hours), fiber, birth control, HRT, soy all bind a percentage of the thyroid hormones (including incoming meds). Cabbage family veggies (cauliflower, cabbage, brocolli, etc.) are goitrogenous (meaning they slow thyroid function) if eaten RAW, but usually won't bother if cooked, or steamed. Strawberries, peanuts (unroasted), walnuts and several other foods bother some hypothyroid people, too, as well as uncooked flaxseed. Now, YMMV....flaxseed doesn't bother me, neither do strawberries, but peanuts or nuts aren't something I eat (allergic). Pam |

Many of them won't mention having your T3 tested, either,,,,,they just give you a T4 med (Synthroid, the most expensive, Levoxyl, etc.) instead of a natural replacement such as Armour Thyroid.
Just another reason why I'm a volunteer thyroid patient advocate....we NEED to know the facts!! Pam |

Well, In my case I was given the full work up..but I'm a lab tech..so they know they can't get that over on me! lol I usually go in and tell THEM what I want ordered! To be honest..the how to take it and what not to combine it with should have come from the pharmacist
Do you know of any natural thyroid supplements that might be available in Canada? Mandy |

Armour is available in Canada, it is called just plain "Thyroid" there. I do hear of Canadians having a hard time getting a physician to Rx. it though. Good for you!! Being a lab tech would be really great....it was like pulling TEETH to get my doc to run a Free T4 and Free T3 (my hormones get in the way of the Totals, of course you know THAT...the binding principles)....then I found my wonderful endocrinologist that I've been with for over four years.
I JUST started taking Armour, because my T3 dropped like a rock (I take steroids on an every other day basis....without weaning, along with HRT), but I take compounded, time released Armour...that way I only have to take it once, in the morning. Pam |
