Giving advice on this BB about how to follow the Atkins Nutritional Approach becomes more complicated when diabetes is in the picture, because taking into consideration both blood sugar and medications can vary more so than the typical weight loss issues.
Everyone is individual and it is hard to say for sure how you can incorporate the phases of the approach into your meal planning and blood sugar management. That is not to say it is not possible, it most certainly is. I just do not feel comfortable advising you on such a matter with so little information about your medical history to go on. The best advice I have for you is to read Atkins Diabetes Revolution which was just published the other week. With this information, you will be able to determine how to incorporate the diet into your lifestyle, so that you will not only be managing your blood sugar, but also working towards your weight loss goals. Many diabetics have had great successes follow the Atkins Nutritional Approach, and most have been able to either reduce or go off of their medications. After you have become more familiar with the approach and how it can fit into your lifestyle, I would be more than happy to answer specific questions in order to further individualize your meal planning to your personal needs. Good luck and please keep us updated on your progress! |

DIABETIS AND ATKINS
I am type II also and this approach has brought my sugars into control. I have only had two incidents of low blood sugar due to my own neglect in not eating soon enough. I was half expecting to be able to get off my meds, not yet. I have reduced one though, so maybe I am on my way. Before atkins I could not get my sugars under 200, now they are perfect. I have lost 33 #'s since May 29th and even if I had lost nothing, it would still be worth it to follow this for life for my diabetis.
Good luck in your research. I hope Atkins can help you as much as it has helped me! |

I will risk the firey arrow and tell you to SEE YOUR DOCTOR about a low carb eating lifestyle. He WILL need to watch your blood sugar too with you so that you can lower you medictions and help you with the hypoglycemia.
It was not stated in the answer to your question so I thought I'd post. You most certainly can (and may I say, should) try Atkins to lower you blood sugar but it must be with your doctors knowledge so he knows why your blood sugar is getting more stable. Post and let us know in awhile how it is going!! Xanthra |

I agree with your peers.
The results you talk about (doing Atkins and getting low BS) is common if you are on medications. You must work with your physician on reducing your medications. Atkins works so well that you may not need tham at all or you will be able to reduce your medications significantly. Carbohydrates directly effect blood sugar, so when you reduce carbs as you do on Atkins, your blood sugar comes down. It is that simple. You will not need the same medication regimen because the lack of carbs acts as an alternate and superior means to control blood sugar. It is good to hear that you are experiencing one of the many healthy benefits of the Atkins lifestyle! |

I am Type 2 Diabetic & Atkin's is what has brought my blood sugars down to a normal range. I have never had extermely low blood sugar eating this way. It's more balanced & steady throughout the day. Talk to your doctor about it.
