Hypothyroidism and Coenzyme Q10

This is a great service. I was glad to find you on the board.

I am wondering about hypothyroidism and CoQ10. I recently found a reference on the web that said don't take it if you are a thyroid patient. Elsewhere I found encouragement for HYPERthyroid patients to take it because their metabolism uses it up so rapidly.

At another site, dedicated to thyroid information and issues, I found this transcript of an interview with a specialist --

thyroid.about.com/cs/expertinterviews/a/sinatra.htm

I understand this doctor to be recommending it for thyroid patients without distinction between hypo- and hyper-.

I am confused to say the least.

In addition to 150 mg of levothryoxin, I currently take the following dietary supplements daily -- a one a day multivitamin/basic minerals pill, essential fats, calcium/magnesium, potassium and glucosomine.

My cholesterol levels are just fine (since starting low carb ) but my blood pressure is on the high side of normal i.e. 135 /90. I have some family history of high BP, hypothyroidism and heart disease.

What do you think? What is the current medical/nutritional thinking?

CoQ10 and hyperthyroidism

Actually, you are well researched and I agree! CoQ10 may or may not be appropriate for your condition.

This is a case where your doctor will need to determine (on an individual basis) if supplementing with CoQ10 will benefit or hinder your health condition.

Always let your doctor know about any supplements/vitamins you use.

Good Luck!

Please be aware, also, that calcium (as well as iron, fiber, soy) bind the thyroid med, so no calcium for at least four hours around the taking of your thyroid med.

Thyroid med should be taken on an empty stomach, either an hour before, or two hours after eating.

Hi all,
I found this post while searching on hypothyroidism and CoQ10. Actually I had picked up a couple of bottles of Co Q10 for my husband way back in 2006, after learning it was good for the heart.

More recently, I was diagonised with hyperthyroidism, developed an allergy for the medication, underwent radioactive treatment to destroy a large part of my overactive thyroid. And now I am hypothroid, listless and tired most of the time. Being a vegetarian generally, and absolutely no red meats, I thought of taking some Co Q 10, more on an impulse. And hey, presto.. I feel a lot better.
Is it because I have taken up a more fulfilling job recently, or got adjusted to my Eltroxin or the Co Q 10, I am not sure.

Can anyone help me?
