Pigged Out

So I have done so well on Atkins ( staying in induction phase for a while , 2002 version ) ...since I started I've lost over 20lbs...quite happy with that, however this weekend I had a total pig out ...I had Chips Ahoy cookies, potato chips, full sugar pepsi, and frozen pizza...I just got a craving in my head and I just HAD to have it ...so I did...obviously I am no longer in ketosis...

1st question - I know we are not perfect , and that some of you have done the same ...how long after a meal like this did it take you to get back into the fat burning mode ?

2nd - my ketosis strips are always in the large amount category, very dark...is that normal to always get that kind of reading? I test both at night and first thing in morning before I eat and it's always the same.

Thanks,
Carri

Carri, just get right back on track. Don't let it this cause a 2 day, or 2 week, or 2 month binge. Right back at it today. I wouldn't stress over the stix, just get back to eating clean.

We are not perfect. I had only one cheat this entire time (and it was HUGE) -- I gave myself PERMISSION (stupid, right) -- I call it the Thanksgiving Fiasco of 2013. But I went into it telling myself that I would pig out over Thurs, Fri & Sat and jump right back into the LC WOE saddle on Sunday -- which I did. OMG I was sick as a dog, it felt exactly like being hung over -- talk about carb overload. I had headaches and hot flashes & cold sweats -- on top of that, I gained 9 lbs and it took me 6 days to lose them. Lesson LEARNED!!

Like MG said, don't worry about the stixs, they are notoriously inaccurate. LC WOE is easy -- but you have to follow the plan religiously (with no cheats) and you will see results. Wishing you heartfelt success on your personal LC WOE journey!

Thanks Jo !!

I've been very strict since then so hope to be back in it maybe even today or tomorrow...I haven't been on the scale for fear I would see a bit of a gain, so letting that have time to get back off before I jump back on there.

Maybe if you can figure out why you cheated this last time you can prevent it the next time? Come up with plan A, B or C?? Or eat LEGAL LC foods... I have an inspirational quote that Tweaker Geek came up with that might help too:

“Nothing Tastes as Good as Being at my Personal Weight Goal will Feel!”

I have it posted on my frig.

It usually takes me a few days to get back into ketosis. Many of us have had slip ups, it happens...just get back on track. Don't beat yourself up over it, but don't use it as an excuse to eat more carbs. I'm not sure about the stix, I don't use them.

Carri,
i did a really stupid carbload day on some bad infromation. It took a full week to get back to good ketosis. It is differnt for us all, try and find something else to fill that urge. I know easier sad then done

For me I sometimes can quell cravings urges with green olives and dill spears. They have strong flavor and some crunch so it works sometimes

Good idea maxiumdensity - I do love pickles ...unfortunately I did this again last weekend this time for three days and was totally thrown out of ketosis ...been on plan since Tuesday and was finally in ketosis again this morning ....hopefully I can fight those urges go forward ...I know I feel so much better when I do

Do you see a pattern for this, Carri? Before I got my head screwed on correctly, I'd eat to plan for 5 days, lose weight then reward myself for a job well done by eating crappy carb-y foods on the weekends -- that worked NOT! So I'd gain and lose the same pounds over and over again... until I realized Fat Jo (my evil self destructive alter ego) loved eating carbs and I had to stop feeding HER.

I too have been there and did the same thing many times. Here is my go to for stopping a carb binge. EGGS, EGGS, and more EGGS !!!!! When I am feeling like a carb binge I make some HB eggs. I eat 2 mashed up with butter. HOT. That will fix it. If you do not like them hot eat cold with mayo , mustard and black pepper. YUMMY !!!
Also are you drinking enough water? I have found if I do not drink my one gallon of plain water every day I crave carbs and will not lose any pounds. Now, this is just me. Some people can do fine on 64 ounces a day. I can not.
I hope this helps you. Good Luck !!!

You're SO right Jo ...I did the exact same thing this weekend ...so I'm good M-F and then eat carbs and sweets on the weekend...and I'm only gaining back what I lost during the week ...I'm in a bad cycle right now and I really need to break it somehow...gonna work really hard this weekend not to do it.

Jaded - I do like hard boiled eggs so I'll try that...good idea.

Love this! My "slip-ups" have caused me to gain 30 lbs in just a few short months. I need to lose it again and want to lose another 15 just to finally get down to the weight I know I should be! Today's the day to re-start. :-)

I used to give myself a binge day on the weekends. And then, as others have said, I would end up losing the same three pounds every week. I had to quit doing it. I only have a cheat day (or couple of days) every few months now, and it's always planned. I had a few cheat days at the end of last month on vacation, and I managed not to gain any weight. However, I have been stalled at the same weight since then, so maybe I am still recovering. Anyway, cheats are rarely worth the trouble they bring. But they happen. Just get back in the saddle and you'll start losing again.

What I like to do if I feel a binge coming on is have a cup of coffee with lots of cream and chocolate flavored syrup and extra sweeteners, then, I read up on low carb recipes. I do not cook many but just looking at what I can have if I choose to helps me regain control. That, and while I'm looking them it gives the cream time to hit my belly and satiate me.

If I still feel the need to eat "badly" I cook something so at least if I overeat I will be doing it on plan which might cause a stall but won't kick me out of ketosis.

No matter what just get back on plan and keep going.

That's a great idea, Leanne! I think I'll do that the next time I feel a binge coming on... Thank you!

I just can't seem to go anymore than like 3 days now without eating something high carb and throwing myself out of ketosis ...it's getting pretty old, and I'm quite bloated, haha

Gotta turn this thing around somehow ...not looking forward to going thru Atkins flu again

Carri, before you eat something that isn't on plan, stop and think about how you're feeling right now. Just stop for a second and decide if it's really worth it or not. Is the few minutes of eating it really worth the way you're feeling now? Sometimes when I was craving something, it would really help for me to stop and think through the cheat and that would convince me every time that I really didn't want it.

Carrie: Maybe you should join us on the monthly challenge. It sure helps me.
Every morning most of us weigh in and it really helps keep me accountable cause if I think of eating something I know I shouldn't I just remember that weigh in and scale in the morning.
I'm one of those that needs to account for my actions.

Maybe give it a try, what could it hurt at this point??? Jump in right now if you want. We will start another July 1st if you're so inclined!

Thanks Ladies ...MotherGoose, you are right and it is never worth it due to how I feel afterwards, I do need to really start thinking about that...

Bonny-Jean - I will check that out and join, will probably help my accountability ...only I only weigh in once a week ...does that matter ? If I do everyday I just obsess too much.

I need to just take it a day at a time right now...I'm re-reading the Atkins book ( 2002 version ) and thankfully dh is on board again too ...I'd hate to know what I've gained with this week off but gotta face it and move on.

I'm quite the opposite Carrie. I would drive me wild not knowing how I was doing. Plus waiting a week to find out if I needed to reduce something or add something would upset me more. I guess psychologically it has been said to weigh just once a week but since you've mentioned your weekend "cheating" many times then maybe you need a daily reminder or accounting of what you're eating. Not preaching hon, just wanna help ya!

Weighing in daily definitely helps. I stopped doing that for a long time and I think that's how the weight crept up so easily. When you weigh in daily, you see the direct effects of what you ate the couple of days prior and can adjust. More accountability, for sure.

With that said, I can't help doing the same as you, Carri. I keep going back to high carbs at least once a week which puts me right back to where I started. I need to figure out a way to get through that... Like for last night, I did think through it like MtherGooses said, and even thought to come online for some support, but felt like I needed it. I've come to realize carbs are a drug for me. It doesn't seem to matter that I know I'll feel a rock coming through my stomach and get so tired I won't want to get out of bed. It seems I need them to help me relax. I am under a lot of stress right now and am living with people who are not very supportive, but I can't leave. I need to figure out something that will work for me to get me through those tough times. And I did think of drinking cream filled coffee, but in my mind, knew it wouldn't be enough... As I think about this now, maybe I need to have tea prepared for the evening so I can just drink a ton of that to fill me up. It seems I need that full feeling to rest at night... Does anyone else ever feel that way?

Thanks Bonny-Jean - what you said does make sense ...maybe I start weighing in at least every other day to keep on track or daily ...I do need to know that it's working to keep me in line

Louella - I have been doing the cheat every weekend thing for a few weeks and it has gotten me no where too ...and then this week off all week ...today is my first day back on ...can't wait for that bloat to go away...I also have the hard rock in my stomach you talk about ...I can see what you are saying with the going to bed with a fuller stomach ...hard to sleep thru hunger pangs ( is that how that's spelled haha ) ...that's what i like about Atkins ...I'm never really hungry ...

Just need to get over my card addiction

Ever since I was little I've been called "the bottomless pit" because I'm always hungry. Atkins definitely helps with that, but sometimes, especially at night, I get lazy and don't want to cook. It has helped when I've cooked up large batches on Sunday, but the way I am, those batches are gone by Monday evening... I feel like I need life changes. This staying home stuff is really getting to me... Sorry... just venting because I'm a bit frustrated with myself...

That is a big one on my part too, I have to have things made ahead of time or I will go for the bad stuff.
What helps me is that my dh loves to cook, so when I don't feel like it he'll do it ...and I don't feel like it a lot. lol

You work from home or you don't work ? Maybe even a part time job to get you out of the house if you are going stir crazy ...

We are going to have chicken wings tonight and I'm starving ...can't wait to eat ...but I really need to go to the grocery store tomorrow so I am prepared with low carb snacks and stuff.

I love chicken wings! That's a new one I've added to my low carb arsenal. I'm thinking steak and spinach salad for tonight and get back on it... This morning alone I already blew my carbs for the week. It was difficult recovering from last night... but I've been focusing on work today and getting things done so that does help keep me motivated. I know I'll need to rest again at some point so will have to do all I can to not get into my mom's bag of chips she has laying around...

I work from home, running two businesses and just dropped getting a non-profit started. Can't seem to find steady work outside of the home... even part-time. People just aren't hiring and I'm dying to find out why, but even the experts seem to have no clue. I keep hearing I have a "stunning" resume and am "the full package". Right now I'm playing the waiting game on hearing back from two places... one is for part-time work, the other is full-time. I'm assuming the other part-time job I interviewed for isn't going to hire me as I haven't heard a peep back. These two are at least keeping me informed of where I am in the process...
