A bowflex treadclimber would be my pick. I can not afford one right now, so I'm going to stick to my cheap-o bike! Maybe one day!

Busy day Bonny! I am pretty sure the furbaby wouldn't mind you being a half hour later unless she has to have something specifically in the afternoon? I have six persians so understand your devotion! Are you close enough to work that you can gomback there later for the gym?

I suggest you take up your friend on two gym visits, just to see if you like the environment inside. You don't have to stay long - maybe try the high intensity interval training but for only 4 cycles - that means you only would need to be there 15min max. Once you get in, you will quickly see its not such a daunting place. And you will probably find that you get lots of encouragement from people there you thought might judge you. I can't tell you the number of people I have befriended on what was their first day at the gym, if someone looks lost or looks like they are having trouble with a machine, I often go up to them and offer them help (must be the Canadian in me! My gran was born in Pine River, MB and me in Newmarket, ON). I have many friends that started off like this and over the years I have trained with them but also brought them into my circle of friends - which is primarily made up of gym people!

My dream home machine - not a machine but a set of dumbells with interchangeable weights and a couple stretchy rubber cables with handles. Cardio can be done anywhere - at home with a skipping rope, on the steps, jogging on the spot, doing a zumba video, walking outside, walking at a mall, etc. Weights are cheap, take up little space and can easily be done at home with little extra equipment needed (maybe a floor mat or a step).

But its better to hit your free gym than get bits for home. Only because it gets you out of the house, meeting new people and exposes you to new challenges.

Go on, give it a try, it won't bite!!!

Hi all,

Well it's finally cold around here at 29*. They are calling for snow all day so the kids should love that. I think hot coco and marshmallows are in order, but not for me

Shelly - So sorry. Glad you are here

I think I would pick a treadmill so I could walk when it rains and is this cold out. I really can't do anything else, so that would be my choice.

Goal = 158

Weights:
Dec 1 - 166
Dec 2 - 167
Dec 3 - 168
Dec 4 - 167
Dec 5 - 168.5 (tom)
Dec 6 - 169.5 (tom stopped)
Dec 7 - 167.5
Dec 8 - 167.5

Pretty good Shelly. Don't know if I'd ever get that bored? LOL. Nothing moved on my scale or measuring tape. Ugh. Well, no loss... no gain.

Thanks for that. I hope one day I can call myself a "gym rat." I managed to get my head wrapped around this new WOE and no real cheats in 12 wks but really gonna have to work on the "exercise" thing. Thanks again.

Shelly: way to go on the lunges.

Bonny-jean: What Tiggy said.

PC: Avoid the coca great job

Was expecting quite the bounce this morning. But only up .6. Did not run or workout before weighing so very happy with that. I usually drop between 2-4 pounds after working out. I know all water weight but that is why I try and do the same things each morning. Slept in today and it felt great. If I would have run before weighing like normal would have been down for sure. No worries have a short 3 miler in the morning. Today will head to gym after this post for a shoulder and chest workout, with a little core work then a nice long jacuzzi sit for these tired legs and then a steam for good measure. Home to clean the house I did not do yesterday and hang more Christmas lights!!!! So a super active day to keep the scale moving towards my goal. The stats:

December Goal 225

Dec. 01…240.2(starting the month up 1.4 pounds awesome!!!!)
Dec. 02…238.2 (after a 3 mile run???)
Dec. 03…237.6 (think stall is broken)
Dec. 04…236.0
Dec. 05…235.4
Dec. 06…235.0
Dec. 07…233.0 (whoosh again!!!) so happy
Dec. 08…233.6

Bonny-jean: The next step is the gym. 12 wks on plan is a great accomplishment. You can do this. Just think of the post you can make. "I was in the gym for 45 minutes today and I feel great" Bonny, you will feel great. Speaking of that I am heading to the gym so I can feel great, my future little "gym rat" I stop keeping count of how many days in a row but a lot!!!!

This is how Wednesday to today has gone. Wednesday did four outdoor pots for clients, worked at the Newspaper until 11pm
Thursday worked at the newspaper from 5am to 10 pm then Friday same long hours as Thursday, then was contacted by a client how is opening a buy out type shop and asked me if I could come in and merchandise the shelves and decorate inside and out, her opening is today..,so I.be worked the entire day yesterday from 5am to 1 this morning so this is a quick not to say I,m here...eating protein and fat really does keep you going and you can really survived on little and water:-)

Trini, nice to see you! Sounds like you are crazy busy, but still staying on plan, which is awesome!

Shelly, nothing about that sounds fun! LOL. Although sometimes I think it would be nice to be snowed in for a couple of days just so I could get things done at home. But since I really despise the cold, I probably would hate it. Hope you get to dig yourselves out today and go see your parents!

PC, I've been thinking about making some hot cocoa for the BF with Heavy Whipping Cream, Unsweetened Almond Milk, 1 Tsp. of Cocoa Powder, and Chocolate Flavored Stevia Drops. I haven't tried it yet, but if you're really craving the cocoa, you might want to try it. If it's good, the whole family might even like it!

Cold for us here today too. In the 30's this morning, which for us, is frigid! Not liking it at all.

BonnyJean, for me it would be the treadmill. I actually did spend the money about a year ago to buy a nice one, and I do have it, and it's really nice and convenient to have it at home. I agree that going to the gym is probably more fun, and more social, but for me, the convenience of having it at home is better. We work such long days that I just couldn't work in a gym trip each day.

Kemp, having the towel fit around you is not a small thing, that's a big accomplishment! That's one of those NSV's that can keep you going whether the scale moves or not.

Laura and DQ, really missing you!

December goals: Arm weights every other day, crunches everyday. Weight goal is a very aggressive 159.anything!

December 1: 170.2 (arm weights/crunches)
December 2: 168.8 Whoosh! (crunches)
December 3: 168 (arm weights/crunches)
December 4: 168.4...not sure what that little blip is about, maybe I inhaled too much powdered sugar??? (crunches)
December 5: 167.8 Yay! I inhaled less powdered sugar than the day before! (arm weights/crunches)
December 6: No weigh in. I only had about 4 1/2 hours of sleep and I know my weight won't be accurate. (crunches)
December 7: 167.4 (arm weights/crunches)
December 8: 167.4 (crunches)

Feeling a bit irritated. I have been so damn good.

Gypsy, I'm sure a Whoosh is headed your way! I usually lose in fits and bursts. I'll stay the same for days in a row, sometimes even a week or more, and then I'll just lose 2 pounds at once. So try not to get too frustrated. As long as you keep being consistent as you have been, it WILL happen.

I will say that I feel solidly out of the 170s and have absolutely no intention of going there again. TOM isn't due for another few weeks. I have had absolutely no more than 15 carbs on any day since Thanksgiving. Maybe I need to push a little harder and go for no more than 10 carbs per day max. I hate troubleshooting this earlier, but maybe if I don't see any scale budge tomorrow morning, I'll drop it. Just frustrating. I can already see my arms and abs coming back a bit and my pants fit better. I'm a slave to the scale!

I understand, rational or not, we're all that way. But don't be too quick to tweak. If you're solidly on plan, no hidden carbs and eating only clean foods, then give it time to work. Unfortunately, our hormones really play into it. We can be doing everything right, but hang out at the same scale weight for a while, and then have a good drop as our hormones change over the month.

I do stick to under 10 carbs per day myself, but just because I know that's what works for me and I'm happy eating that way. I eat just meat, eggs, cheese, and fats. That's it. And it keeps my carbs really low. BUT if eating that way feels too restrictive to you, and you're not happy with it, then you're setting yourself up for failure. If you're happy dropping your carbs, go ahead, but if you're not, then just wait it out. Work the plan and it WILL work for you.

Gypsy: What mother goose said exactly!!! She is right about tweaking. But it is just in our nature as we are all slaves to that dang thing sitting on the floor and telling me if I am successful or not. I hate it when it does not move. But stick to the plan and it will whoosh. I stalled for 7 days straight and I have not lost 7 pounds in the last seven days. Did not tweak except working out first thing in the am instead of afternoon.

Shelly: Sounds cold!!!!!!!!

I made it to the gym and did my workout. 2.5 hours and only a 800 calorie burn. I use to burn that in 45 minutes. But this go round all about the long burn not the quick fix. (well a little quick fix. LOL) So now to clean the house and hang lights. Just going to stay moving all day today. Gypsy I gained .6 today and although I know it is just water retention I am moving around a lot today to make sure it moves in the morning. So it is a good thing when it does not move, so we workout a little harder that is my tweak any way. Not my twerking!!! LOL Will check back in later, time for lunch.

You are what you eat....motivational

Remember, what you eat is more important than exercising. Sometimes we beat ourselves up because we miss a workout or can't workout (what happenned to me 2x after being on bedrest with pregnancies or c-sections).

However, dieticians & nutritionists say losing weight is 80% what you eat and just 20% exercise.
I have also wondered how some people "kill themselves" at the gym, then load up on high calorie drinks & foods for rewards, which is counterproductive!
I have several friends who will say, "I earned this cake!". I say, why bother?!

Anyway, for me, I have cut back to low intensity walking or jogging 3 miles just 3-4 days a week. I am actually losing more weight now that I am focused on what I eat rather than intense workouts.

Once I reach my 140 goal, I will go back to intense workouts and p90x, so I can maintain.

Skinny: You are 100 percent correct. Abs they say are made in the kitchen not the gym. Imagine how much you would lose if you ate right and worked out right. That is what I do and it is amazing the results I am getting. I love the gym and do not want to waste one day in the gym. So if at night I want a treat, I say to myself that will cost you two days in the gym to lose that, or you can wake up in the morning down a little and knowing that the workout you are about to do will be to lose more weight not what you ate last night!!!! I still have "plan alterations" but they are now few and far between now that I workout so much.

Once I reach goal, I hope to jog 5 or 6 miles & follow your model of commitment to exercise. Then I hope to see my abs come in by spring time!!

I know you didn't ask, but... Ab definition is driven by genetics, more significantly than almost any other aspect of physique competition.

Both of my brothers are competitive bodybuilders and, because of their genetics, they show ab "cuts" when they still have a *relatively* high bodyfat percentage (as measured by bodybuilding standards). They still have sharply defined abs during bulking cycles at about 15% bodyfat, which is really really HIGH for bodybuilders. Due to their genetics, my brothers both cut "subcutaneous" torso fat before they cut "visceral" torso fat. And they store visceral torso fat before they store subcutaneous torso fat.

The torso has two separate layers of fat: "subcutaneous" fat that is stored directly under the skin, and "visceral" fat that is stored underneath the muscles and on top of the organs. *Almost* everyone depletes visceral fat first, partly because visceral fat is served by more veins and arteries, so fat transport from visceral deposits is generally more efficient. *Some* people, based on their genetics, deplete subcutaneous torso fat more easily than visceral torso fat. No one *really* knows why, all we know is that it's a genetic pattern.

Bodybuilding competitions are judged on "proportion" as well as "definition," so having defined abs is NOT enough. Judges look for a tapered "V" torso, so the visceral fat has to also be reduced to a very low level. Some physique competitors get a really sharp V taper and great proportion, but still have to fight down to 5-7% bodyfat before they get the ab definition that they need to compete. *Most* guys get good ab definition before getting to an extremely low level of bodyfat, but there are some guys who, due to their genetics, preferentially store subcutaneous torso fat and have to cut almost all of the fat from their body in order to get the ab definition they need for competition.

Of course, bodybuilding standards of "definition" are not the same as casual standards of definition. Bodybuilders have to "striate" in a way that shows muscle fibers, which is not what most people want their abs to look like.

Half an hour?? What kind of exercise can you REALLY do in 1/2 hr?? Impossible.
1. Go to the gym
2. Change into work out gear
3. Do 45 minutes minimum
4. Undress and shower and dry
5. Redress and leave for home.

I don't know about you but I'd never, ever get that done in 1/2 hour??? I'm sure I wouldn't be home for at least 70-75 mins. Not a lot in the evening I know but every hour my poor puppy is alone, I feel tremendous guilt. I will get this figured out and please understand I am grateful for your encouragement and everything you said made sense to me. I really do appreciate it. The thought of being selfish and putting myself first is something I'm really gonna have to work on, I guess. Much appreciation though. Thank you.

Bonny-Jean, I completely sympathize with you! Our girls are like that too. If we're not home on time, they know it, and they are NOT happy. Pit bulls are EXTREMELY sensitive and they get their feelings easily hurt! So if we're not home on time, they're liable to start eating the furniture. Literally. That HAS happened to us.

I remember those days well! The kids all waking up at 4:00 am to start listening to the radio for school closings. I could never get them up that early on an actual school day, but the thought of school closing was always enough to get them up early!
