Hi Princessmommy,

It's all quite new to me at the moment even though I'm pretty sure I've been affected since I was 11 so almost 30 years! I just started treatment in August this year so am learning. It does seem to affect so many things for me. You seem to have done really well though so there is hope for me

Good morning everyone! Thanks for the welcome. I am on the road this week, so breakfast was scrambled eggs and bacon and coffee. What do you all do to prevent getting bored with eggs, salads and such. I am not terribly creative with my meals and I often think that is why I struggle so much to maintain this lifestyle.
I look forward to you advice and be back a little later.....

A bit about me:

I live in London, I'm a mum of 3 teenagers. I was skinny most of life (putting on a bit after having the children but losing most easily) but then about 5 years ago after moving house and leaving my long term stressful relationship, I started to gain weight rapidly. It was such a shock to me and no matter how much I exercised or improved my diet, I just kept gaining. I went from around 135lbs to just over 200lbs in about a year. I got more and more tired, miserable, irritable and ached all over.

So fast forward to this year when I began to suspect something was really wrong. I did some research and thought I may be hypothyroid. Turns out I was right and I have Hashimotos. At least it explained most of the weight gain. I finally got some treatment and am hoping to lose the rest of the weight now.

I'm guessing that as I've just started Atkins the weight is coming off quickly but will probably slow down soon. I don't think I've ever lost this much in such a short space of time even if it is water weight. This is my 4th day on Atkins.

Hope to put an avatar up soon but am currently using my phone as my cat chewed my laptop charger

Goal for October 164lbs

1st October - 171.8lbs
2nd October - 169.0lbs
Hey Kimi,
We have a lot in common.
I was born in London & lived there for 15 years before moving to NYC.
I also have 2 kids (under age 5)
I never had a weight problem until I hit my 30s. I was always 120-135 & very active. Then with each child I gained 60-70 lbs...up to 215. After working out religiously and eating 1200 calories a day for months and only losing 10 lbs in 4 months, my doctor finally diagnoses me with hypothyroidism!!
Atkins is now working for me, albeit slowly, but working. The weight just doesn't fall off...average about 2- 4 lbs a week.
I will say that it is best to avoid spinach, kale, almonds & almond milk, as they tend to stall weight loss.
Good luck to you!!

Good Morning everyone! And welcome to all of our new people! It's great to have a big group of people for support, encouragement, and inspiration!

Trini, (((HUGS)))! Be careful going back to work today and PLEASE don't overdo it and end up back in the hospital!

Susan, Laura is definitely your best source for recipes and menus! She's always trying new recipes and coming up with great meal ideas!

Kimi, add me to the list of the Hypothyroid. Once I started on my meds for it though, it hasn't been a problem.

Well, the bounce continues! Up 2 pounds again today. Grrrr....... Just have to go with it and know it will go back down. I was already pushing my luck with trying to lose 12 pounds this month, but this makes it even less likely. I wonder if the walking at night is making me retain me some water?

Skinny, does the almond milk cause you problems???? I have been drinking a glass of almond milk each day to get my calcium in. It doesn't seem like there's anything in it to cause problems, only 30 calories and less than 1 carb, but I wonder if that's why I'm bouncing around so much on the scale? Hmmmmm.........

Yes, I was so frustrated that I was not losing despite religiously eating under 25g carbs a day. I would drink a protein shake smoothie mixed with almond milk after my morning workouts. On another blog, someone warned me about almond milk. Once I replaced the almond milk with water & a tbsp of cream, the weight started coming off.

Susan we do alot of eggs here... fried, scambled, omelets... I even grind bacon up in my food processor and them add alittle bit to eggs... Sometimes just changing up the meat that you have with it... this morning Dh had pork chops with his... he liked the change... depending on what you are doing for your plan, you can add alittle onion, bell pepper, mushrooms... sometimes I cook them in butter, or vegetable. oil.. also there is the devil eggs or the egg salad... remember you don't always have to eat eggs for breakfast so mix it up alittle bit

Oh yes there's hope! Lol! I've definetly had ups and downs with losing weight but ya just have to Keep going! And making sure your thyroid levels are "Normal" is a major key. I need to go back to my Dr in the next few months just for a check up.

We certainly do seem to have a lot in common. I think 2-4lbs a week is brilliant and if I can attain the same, I will be ecstatic On my prior attempts at losing weight this year, I've been lucky to lose 2lbs a month.

Wow! So many of us seem to be hypothyroid. I have read that for Hashi's sufferers, carbs are not good anyway. I know even as a young child, bread, any white carbs and sugar always made me feel ill but I had no idea why.

Well it's great to have others here like me! Hopefully we can support each other to reach our goals. I know I'm completely determined

I hope we can be "diet buddies"... since we have similar traits & diet goals, it will be nice to see our progress. I remember one month when I did Weight Watchers, watched my WW points religiously, no more than 1200 calories daily, ate organic food, drank 8 glasses of water daily, jogged 5 miles every morning at 6am before the kids woke up, then did turbo jam 45 min DVD at 8pm before dinners daily...ONLY LOST 2 LBS IN ONE MONTH!! I was so frustrated, which is what lead me to get my thyroid tested.
now I am on a mission & will not let my thyroid or stress derail my diet. I know we can do it!

Ps. Flakes & Turkish Delight are my weakness, so I am glad they do not have them in the US.

I'm glad I have a diet buddy! It should make this journey a lot more interesting. All that exercise and only 2lbs loss, I know exactly how you feel. Stress completely stalls my weightloss too. You won't believe this but flakes and Turkish delight are my favourites too! We must be related

Kimi When I got DX'd
with Hypothyroid I honestly thought I had diabetes! I was feeling Horrible! So my Dr at the time tested me for it and thyroid. Diabetes test came back Normal but was definetly hypothyroid! My Dad has it, His mom had it and now my Mom has it. Took me a long time to find a dr who would do more then just test my TSH!

Princessmommy,

Being hypo is definitely no fun! I felt 90 years old.

My doctor would never have diagnosed me as having Hashi's. I did a private test and then presented my results to my GP. She really tried to fob me by saying I just had fibromyalgia even though my anti bodies were almost 2000 and my TSH was 10.6. All the frees were very low as well. She basically told me to come back when the antibodies had destroyed my thyroid.

Anyway I told her all the research I'd done and she gave me a T4 trial. I never took it though as I managed to get Naturethroid instead. Needless to say my aches and pains I'd had for years vanished the same day!

Hi, I'd like to join the group for October. I've been losing about 5 lbs a month on average, so that's what I'll set as my goal for October. Today I'm at 234.7 and would like to be 229.7 by the end of the month.

I lose very slowly because I take Depo Provera. It's known for weight gain, water retention, interference in carbohydrate metabolism, etc. But, it is also great for reducing the emotional rollercoaster from hormones. I feel like it keeps me sane, so I'm just going to have to deal with the slow weight losses.

My shot is due next week, so I may need your support if I have a gain or extremely slow loss. 5 lbs might not be attainable right after the shot, but we shall see.

WOW! You are amazing. My mom told me also that I had to stay on top of these doctors, who do not always know how to properly treat thyroid. With a proper diet & exercise we can beat this thing! Take care...wishing you success
