Am I doing this all wrong??

Hi Folks,
After reading and reading, I think I'm doing my induction wrong. I was under the impression I could eat all the protein I wanted. Now I'm seeing these numbers like 70/40/20 or such. The only thing I though I had to watch was to keep the carbs below 20. Now I should be counting protein, fat and calories consumed in a day? Does this mean I should look up every piece of protein I want to eat to make sure my calories don't exceed the standard amount?? Maybe this is why I don't feel like I might be in Ketosis? An average day consists of:
B: 2-3 whole eggs, 1/4-1/2 lb bacon
L: 1 c. lettuce, few bits of onion and radish and 2 tbsp Ranch.
D: 10 oz. of fried pork steak, or rack of back ribs, or full fillet of salmon.
Snacks might be a cheese string or 8-10 slices of kolbaso (1/4")
2 c. coffee with cream, 2 tbsp Spenda

I so want to succeed but having only lost a few pounds in the first 13 days makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong?

Hi Beeg46! It looks like, from your stats, that you've lost 8 pounds in 13 days, which is great! That's nothing to be upset about!

In the beginning of induction, I don't think you need to worry about anything other than cutting your carbs to below 20 each day. Don't worry about your macros, or your calories. Later on, if you find that you aren't losing or that you're completely stalled (which is 6 FULL weeks of no inches or weight loss), then you can start adjusting your macros and calories. For now, just stick to foods that are on the induction list, and eat until you are satisfied. NOT stuffed, but satisfied.

Mothergoose offers sounds advice, she's a wise old bird. I posted something to the same effect on another effect. Focus like a laser on counting carbs; it you get hungry, you are ok eating protein and fat. You will have lots of time to tinker with your ratios.

yes, there are people here who either need to or enjoy getting into every possibly nuance of their eating plans. for most this isn't necessary, at least for a long time, just as MtherGoos says. Please don't get distracted by this now! I doubt it will help you lose faster and it makes it MUCH harder to stick to the plan long term. Now is the time for you to be getting used to it and making a commitment to it. good luck.

Thanks everybody. I feel much better now. I don't know where I got the idea that all meat had no carbs?? I just found out my cooked ham is a bad idea but thank you again for your input. It is so appreciated.

I initially made the same mistake.
Some ham, bacon & hotdogs have as much as 5g - 10g carbs because they are cured with sugars. It is best to always check the labels & make sure you have 0g to 3g carbs n the meats. Also some chicken wings may be breaded or have a bbq or honey glaze so check labels or menu at restaurant.

Try to stay away from cured meats or sausages if possible. I usually take a pack of chicken thighs (10-12) and bake them up for the week. Unprocessed is always better, you know what it's cooked in. You won't believe how many things say sugar in the ingredients, and have 0 carbs.

I wish I had done many things when u started. I still say keep track of everything to the t if you can like a phone app. Then you can go back and say, hey this is what works and this doesn't.

Don't be afraid to add regular butter, evoo, full fat meats, 1/2 avocado per day, and coconut oil among others. Bulletproof coffee is awesome also. Try blending your coffee in 1 tbsp butter, 1 tbsp coco oil, and a lil sweetener. Hard to beat in the am.

8 lbs in 13 days is sounding good to me

My problem is I lose 3 or 4 lbs and then next day with no change in eating, I've gained it back. I feel better though. Hopefully you are feeling good and clothes will fit looser and then the scale will follow.

I totally agree with CB. Keeping tract is a huge help for me. It makes us accountable for all our mishaps and we know what we did right and wrong.

Thanks Margn

I think I might be eating too much! Might have to cut back on my protein portions a little. Thanks.

I know everyone's different, but I have lost many times on 3,000+ calories. Dial in what work best for you and run with it.

TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE FOOD??

Well, after being stuck I decided to lower my food intake. I've gone to:
B: 1 egg 3 bacon
L: cup of greens, onion, 1/2 egg, 2 tbsp Ranch
D: 1/2 pork steak or 4 ribs
S: 3 tbsp whipped cream or 1 cheese stick
I'm not hungry so is this small amount of food going to work?? I don't feel like I'm starving myself at all. My scale finally dropped 2 lbs this morning. I think the weight came off because of low calorie intake not necessarily "Atkins induction". I guess it doesn't matter as long as it's working, right? I know exercise would make a dent in things but just can't seem to get motivated after work and can't even consider morning workouts. I just wanted to hear your opinions on the amount I'm eating.

Calories do matter, not as much on atkins though. If you're not hungry, you should be fine. My hunger almost never stops. I'd still say that's not enough fat, unless you have butter or evoo on any of that. Try it for a few days and see how it works. I'd research more on keto, opinions differ so much.

Even Atkins said calories matter. He just said he didn't count them. 8 lbs in 13 days is *a lot*. You might as well get it in your head right now that you are not going to lose every day or every week. Until you've not lost anything in 6 weeks, you aren't stalled. Be patient. Persevere.

Some of us count because we have to (me). Some don't because they can eat 3000 calories and still lose...and lose a lot and quickly (me a few years back). Some count because it gives them a place to look and start tweaking when/if they do stall.

Atkins also said that if you don't lose and/or start gaining, then look to your fats first. The thing that jumps out at me on your initial day's log is that you were eating 4-8 oz of bacon just for breakfast. That is *a lot* of fat and will drive your calories way up. I eat about an ounce of bacon with 2 eggs for breakfast and might repeat that for lunch and dinner which puts me at roughly 1200-1300 calories for the day.

Another thing that jumps out...your lunch is sadly lacking in protein and fats. Why not throw some cheese or meat into that salad? It may be why you're eating so much protein at dinner and I'm assuming you're doing so because you're hungry. Not a surprise with no protein or fats at lunch.
