Ketosis on Prednisone

Hello, I am new and have been trying for about 2 weeks now to go into ketosis by limiting my carbs to as low as possible each day, under 10 some days, but definitely under 20. Most days a ketostick will show between negative and trace. I'm using Bayer right now, and I believe they are accurate. I am also keeping my calories around 1200 a day, similar to the Induction fat fast.

Is anyone out there who has had some success losing weight while on prednisone? I am doing well, in that I have only gained 10 pounds and have been on prednisone since May, so that is pretty good. Usually on prednisone I would gain 10 pounds a month regardless of what I eat. So I know this is time well spent being on low carb.

Any suggestions? Thanks.
Terri

Yes, I'm often on Prednisone. I've lost track of the number of times I've been on it since January alone, but it's been at least 8 times, almost certainly more. When I'm on it, I am vigilant about drinking enough water, and eating mindfully. I don't count calories, and generally I eat when I'm hungry, but when I'm on Pred, I make sure that I actually should eat, rather than listening solely to my hunger pangs (as you know, Pred can make you truly hungry more often).

I often cut my carbs down even further than normal, and my normal is to stay under 20g total, so when I'm on Pred, I'll eat even fewer carbs. Prednisone affects blood sugar, which is part of the danger of it. Cutting my carbs down even more helps.

I've been able to either maintain or continue to lose through every round of Prednisone I've been on. You can too. Just be strict with yourself, and remember it's temporary.

I forgot to mention that I'm either on the Medrol DosPak or IV prednisone, so the dosages differ for me. I am often on it for a week, and then off for one or two weeks.

Hello I am on pred all the time and I range from 5mg to 25mg depending on my condition. I have had no problem losing lbs. however I do really struggle when my dose is on the high end of dosage because I want to eat a lot and have terrible cravings so its a matter of staying on the diet that's the problem for me..hope this helps you..

Ntombi, thanks for your perspective. I will be even stricter with my carbs. I get hungry at night and that's when I usually add three more carbs I didn't need! Would you please share a few days of what you typically eat?

I have the "Low Carbing Among Friends Cookbook." and I went through and tagged all the recipes with less than three carbs. I'm trying to diversify a little. Then I also modify the recipe if I can to make the carbs even lower.

I drink alot of Crystal Light. Is that OK?

When I'm on pred, I might only have one or two servings (actual servings, like half a cup) if veggies per day, and I watch my dairy too, keeping it to maybe two or three ounces per day. I keep my meals really clean, just fatty meats, a little dairy, and a little veg. Nothing extra, no treats, nothing borderline. If I am starving but shouldn't be, I'll have something fatty with minimal protein, so my blood sugar isn't affected (I'm not diabetic, but again because of the pred, I'm conscious of it), or even tea or coffee with coconut oil or butter added.

Crystal Light is okay for some people, but it can cause others to stall, so just keep an eye on it.

You could make your own flavored beverage to get rid of the filler carbs in crystal lite.

Squeeze a lemon into a quart of water and add liquid sweetener to it to make lemonade.
Brew a fruit flavored tea--- I like celestial seasoning raspberry zinger as iced tea. Add a squirt of liquid sweetener and a couple drops of vanilla extract, or use davinci sugar free syrup to sweeten it--- there's some terrific flavors of the davinci, and torani is another brand, and there's another brand at Dollar Stores. Just be careful to get the sugar free ones because they all make sugared ones, too.

Or use the Mio or Dasani water enhancers. Less fillers than the crystal lite, so less trace carbs. I think crystal lite is entering the liquid water enhancer market, too, but I haven't seen theirs yet.

I really like orange tangerine mio with a drop of vanilla in it, in fizzy water.

Anyway, if you come up with a beverage with less trace carbs than the crystal lite, you'll have a little more flexibility with your food carbs.
