Newbe sort of..

Hi I'm new here so I'll share a little and ask a question or 2.

My dad had a heart attack at 53. Soon after he went on Atkins, lost 60 lbs. and has been healthy ever since (with some meds of course) I have slowly put on 50 extra pounds in the last 5 years and am seeing adverse health effects- so, here I am.

I tried to "do Atkins" without reading the book a couple times and didn't lose weight. This time I read the book cover to cover and think I am on track. This is week 3 of induction. I think I have lost 10 lbs. I used a different scale pre and post 3 weeks but my clothes are a little looser. I guess I have some fear and anxiety that I won't lose weight because of past failures. In the past I thought it would be ok to have low carb tortilla's, atkins bars and drink a low carb beer or vodka at night. I also wasn't drinking much water.

I am now strickly following the regime with these 2 exceptions- I was taking Ibuprofin almost daily (which I stopped and switched to Tylenol last week) but I am having a hard time with my coffee intake. I have always drank lots of coffee- 5/6 cups a day. Since last week I have cut my intake to 2 cups in the morning and a half caf. in the afternoon. I have had headaches but I'm hoping to get down to just 2 cups in the morning without headaches.

Did anyone else have an issue/problem with caffeine? Does it really effect weight loss? Is 2 cups a day ok for weight loss?

Thanks- Russ

Hi Russ, it’s great to hear how Atkins has benefited your dad’s health!. I was a heavy coffee drinker but have been doing well this past week. Last week I started to cut down knowing that I was re-starting induction. The headaches are gone, but upping my water intake has been a huge help!

Russ,

Some folks continue to drink coffee and caffeine, with no problems. I'd say do what works and is realistic for you, where coffee is concerned.

I've found, with my past attempts, and so far on this go around, that the caffeine doesn't affect me. I drink diet pepsi all day long, and lots of water, and it doesn't hurt my losses. I think every person is different though and you'll have to see how it affects you.

Welcome Russ. Glad you read the book this time. It will help you. For the first month, just focus on eating no more than 20 grams of carbs and eat the foods from the list of Induction Foods. Rely on the diet, you have seen it work for your Dad, and it will work for you.

Coffee is ok. Like with everything, you need to review how any food item effects you. You need to see if it makes you hungry the next, doe it make you bloated, does it give you headaches, does it make you stop losing. If you can answer these questions and it doesn't negatively effect you, then go ahead and do it.

I would try to eat real food and avoid all fake or processed foods. I think if you do that, your headaches might go away. I used to have headaches when I was eating lots of carbs, now I don't. If I get them, it is usually because I ate something new and discovered it wasn't for me. Here is the Food Porn Thread INDUCTION FOOD PORN!!!

I would be in prison if I couldn't have coffee. No, seriously.

Caffeine is actually a diuretic, so if anything it will remove bloating. There's also some studies that suggest it boosts your metabolism, but also some studies that say the opposite. I too have a diet pop problem, and quite frankly, if drinking diet pop is the worst thing I do these days, then I'm doing okay.

Keep this in mind though, when you only have 20 net carbs to eat in a day, you don't want to throw that away on silly little things like diet pop, gum or sweetener. Yes, it says 0 carbs on the label, but there IS carbs in all of those from sugar alcohols. So even if it is only .5 of a gram, if you have 8 packets of sweetener, 8 pieces of gum and 4 diet pops like I was doing for a while, that's 10 carbs already. Be careful.

Also, don't be afraid because of your past failures. This was my fourth (and final) major weight loss in my life, and I'm only just about to turn 23. I have never been so small in my entire life. I never got below 190 before, and the day I saw 189, I bawled my eyes out like a baby. You CAN and WILL do this if you put your mind to it, have an action plan and FOLLOW THROUGH. Don't throw away what you want most (to lose weight) for what you want in the moment (a piece of bread or chocolate). The game changer for me was reading Wheat Belly. Suddenly, my life wasn't about losing weight, it was about being truly healthy and using food as fuel as opposed to just for enjoyment. My body is a machine, it needs the right gas and oil!

Okay, done my speech. Now wake up tomorrow and smile because you ARE going to do it this time.

Thanks for the speech Mandy

I guess there is a lot of trial and error involved. I guess I need to give everything more time.

The only problem I have with coffee is if I have more than 2 cups, I find that I have some cravings. I can drink iced tea all day though. So I wouldn't worry too much about cutting too far back, as long as you are losing. I saw your thread about the headaches. I take Ibuprofen every day and have had no problems. Tylenol doesn't really work for me the way ibu does.

I may be over analyzing but I tried to start induction without the detailed book info and lost nothing, so, I am trying to follow it 100%. I guess some things only effect certain people. I've got to give it some time and try to read my body- I don't want to jump on the scale every day.

But about the ibuprofen- The induction spot quiz says NSAID's asprin, ibuprofen, naproxin cause water retention and may block fat burning.

I only have the Dandr and Atkins 72 book. I've always followed the Dandr book's induction. I suppose if for some reason I stall, I would try cutting out the ibuprofen. I take it for a strained knee, so I should be able to stop later this year.

After the first time I followed Atkins in the early 2000s I tried to go back a couple times without the book and it did not work out so well. It is best, I think to have the book to read for any questions. I am considering buying the newest book, just to see what is new, such as the nsaid thing. It wasn't in the last edition.

Well good luck and I hope the headaches ease off.
