Starting again-super nervous

I did Atkins back in 2005 and had amazing results. It really changed my life. First time in my life I've really been happy.

Now marriage, two kids later and I'm my heaviest. My husband and I have both gained a ton of weight since we've been married and are doing this together.

I'm scared to fail.

We are also planning on trying for our 3rd baby in 2 months, but I want to spend these 2 months really losing weight and continuing to eat healthy when I'm pregnant.

I could really use a buddy. This is going to be hard for a few days. :(

Hi KellySue! I just started again 3 days ago, so I'm right there with you! I too have had a lot of success in the past with the Atkins WOE, but I caved in to the Bagel Brigade, and listened to all the naysayers who swore that Atkins is unhealthy, and we must eat low fat. Now, starting over AGAIN, at 300 pounds, I'm so ready to make some forever changes. I'd love to join you on this journey!

Good luck to both you ladies. You can do it!! :)

Kellysue: You can do it!!!

If you want it bad enough, you'll do it. I have completely changed my life in the last year. I am 100% a different person. You can too. :)

Kellysue You can do this. We can be buddies if you need support. I have just started over at the beginning of the year and I am having some hiccups as well. Did LC last year and lost about 45lbs and gained 40 of it back. So I hear you at not wanting to fail.

Hi KellySue, just wanted to see how things are going for you?

Welcome

My husband and I are doing this together too. We started on Monday, and have done it in the past also. This time I am trying to get into making different recipes so that it doesn't get so boring.

Day 3 done! Day 2 was harder and I really was craving sweets, but I didn't cave. I was down 6 pounds today, but I am sure thats' all water ;)

My hubby is doing it with me so we are supporting each other :)

One thing I strongly suggest for Kelly Sue and the other "re-starters" is to go back and re-read the book.

I did Atkins in 2003 after reading the book cover-to-cover. 2 kids later... I tried to re-start a couple times... I knew this plan cold, right? And both times, it didn't "work".

Going back and re-reading the book -- no matter if you know it word for word, cover to cover -- makes a HUGE difference!

And I'm here to tell you that it DOES work the second time around. It DOES work when you're 10 years older. It DOES work after you've had 2 babies and blown up like a house....

You can do this. You can get your life back, and feel good (and feel good about yourself) again.

And here's something, for those being told this lifestyle is "unhealthy". It takes a while to watch, but is worth it:

Failure is a possibility, start thinking of a backup plan from now.
Should it not happen then ok, throw it in the dustbin and forget your backup plan.
Should it happen, make it a point that you are NOT giving up.

Assess what may be your culprits and come up with solutions.
Like:
'children will still have their chips so there will be bags laying around the shelves, this may be tempting' -> They will be all on the same shelf and you are not allowed there.
'I am not giving up my Friday night pizza'-> Search for a low carb recipe.
etc...

LiterateGriffin, thank you, I needed to hear that. I've heard several times about the "Golden Shot", that Atkins will only work once for you really well, and I worry about that at times. That maybe I've already had my time on Atkins and I'm going to get stuck and not be able to lose again on it, so thank you for the affirmation that this WILL continue to work for me again!

kellysue24 02-28-2013 01:21 PM

I too have been worried about that golden shot. I was really successful in 2005 and hoping for just as much success!

I was so worried about that myself. My first time on Atkins was in my mid 20's and I dropped weight really well. Other tries have not been as successful, but like LiterateGriffin pointed out, I hadn't re-read the book. This time I re-read the book, and each week I then re-re-read a chapter.

Also I"m not tracking my weight, as in the past it has been very stressful the few times the scale didn't move, so I only take my measurements once a month, and I retake the blood sugar questionnaire too.

My mom started at the same time I did, and at 57 she has lost 36 in three months. She is not able to be more active than taking her dog out to the bathroom several times a day. As far as we can guess I have lost more than her, or I at least LOOK like I have :D

PeleoRainy has a really good point about failing. Don't see any off WOE as a failure, see it as a chance to learn how to do thing differently. :D

Also I would imagine that the lifetime phase of Atkins would be very healthy during pregnancy.

kempmuhlbauer 02-28-2013 01:56 PM

Yes I have heard about the "golden shot" It is kinda true maybe, but not true, but not undoable after your first try. The first time I went on the Atkins diet was 8 plus years ago. I lost weight like carzy, very light walking, just under 20 carbs a day was it. It just fell off. Now I have to do under 5 carbs a day, Work out like crazy and count calories just to get the same affect as before. But it is so worth it to be less heavy, or not as fat, or skinnier, or not as round etc. LOL I have tried them all and this is the only plan that delivers results and is doable for a lifetime with just some effort.
