This looks like a fun and entertaining group. Can I join? I am trying to stick to no more than 20 net carbs per day. I lost 50lbs. from April to Oct. last year and then...life happened. My DD got put in the hospital, we had to take a long car trip for her to see a doctor 18 hours away, then the holidays. I made it out alive and gained about 13lbs during that time. I started back on Dec. 26th. I have lost about 10lbs. since that time. It would have been more, but I went out of town with a friend one weekend, and then a couple of Saturdays ago I had a deliberate carbfest because I had TERRIBLE day and wanted to feel sorry for myself. I got over it though

Anyway, I am determined to stay focused and on track. I felt so bad after my last incident with carbs that I know I don't want to feel that way anytime soon.

Good morning all!!!
I' m still sore from skiing, but recovered from working all night sunday to monday! Yesterday i had wings from ledo's...i usually get wings with just hot sauce and i ask for them extra crispy. Then i take off most of the skin...as much as i can...and dip what's left in blue cheese dressing. Wings was pretty much the only thing i could order..except for pizza toppings! Everything else was a total carbfest!

I usually don't have goals, but i would LIKE to see 142 this month.

Feb. 1: 146
Feb. 5: 145.25

Hey! You don't have to drink all that water!

Morning Ladies
Can I join too please??!! I notice everyone seems bummed about increased numbers on that stupid scale without understanding why. I found an old article today that I thought was interesting and it made me feel better about the scale, maybe it will do the same for you.
WHY THE SCALES CAN LIE

A biologist at Berkeley shared something very revealing on the low-carb BBS system about 4 years ago that helps us all through the erratic weight fluctuations you invariably encounter: Fat cells are resilient, stubborn little creatures that do not want to give up their actual cell volume. Over a period of weeks, maybe months of "proper dieting", each of your fat cells may have actually lost a good percentage of the actual fat contained in those cells. But the fat cells themselves, stubborn little guys, replace that lost fat with water to retain their size. That is, instead of shrinking to match the reduced amount of fat in the cell, they stay the same size! Result - you weigh the same, look the same, maybe even gained some scale weight, even though you have actually lost some serious fat.

The good news is that this water replacement is temporary. It's a defensive measure to keep your body from changing too rapidly. It allows the fat cell to counter the rapid change in cell composition, allowing for a slow, gradual reduction in cell size. The problem is, most people are frustrated with their apparent lack of success, assume they have lost nothing, and stop dieting.

However, if you give those fat cells some time, like 4-6 months, and ignore the scale weight fluctuations, your real weight/shape will slowly begin to show. The moral of the story - be patient! Your body is changing even if the number on the scale isn't.

PATTERNS OF WEIGHT LOSS

Common patterns of weight loss from tracking a lot of people who become assimilated into the low carb lifestyle, a pattern emerges.... the 2 week induction is pretty heady...weight lost just about every single day, enormous and unbelievable amounts of weight loss are reported. This is often followed by complaints that weight loss "stalls" or that the rate drops to only 1 pound per week.

Many people just don't know that fat-loss ...the actual goal when on a weight-reduction" diet, is rate-limited. In other words, the human body has factors that prevent more than a certain amount of fatty-acid release from storage...and even more factors that prevent those released fatty acids from being used up instead of stored back into the fat cells.

A priority of the human body is survival. Anything that threatens its survival results in the cascade of events to maintain the previous status quo. Water fluctuations are one way the body does this. OK...so you done good on Atkins' during induction...lost 10 pounds the first 2 weeks. Maybe 7 the first week and 3 the second. But, whoa! Weeks 3 and 4 there is NO loss! And weeks 5 and 6 is only 1/2 pound each!

So... what gives? Initially, the body jettisons the water attached to the glycogen stores that we diligently deplete to get into ketosis...this accounts for about 3-5 pounds of water. In addition, muscle stores of glycogen are not being replaced when used...which will account for the rest. All in all...MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized during the first week... and MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized the 2nd week. Of that 10 initial pounds, only 1 pound was fat and 9 pounds water...

The body senses this lack and sirens start shrieking: Warning! Warning! Losing water... new thing...got to get back to the status quo! Brain tells body to produce and release that vasopressin anti-diuretic hormone....more water is retained, and no weight loss noticed. Fat loss is still occurring, MAYBE even 2 pounds per week, because ketosis is firmly established and appetite suppression is in effect...but water retention is hiding that continuing fat loss. The body is preventing dehydration with this mechanism, and that's a good thing.

From the perspective of the scale, it can be discouraging. Which is why the mantra: Water retention masks fat loss (repeated frequently to oneself) is helpful. Water retention will mask ongoing fat-loss for as long as the body retains the water. We can combat this by drinking more water...but we aren't going to totally overcome this mechanism during the initial water-loss phase of the Atkins diet. By weeks 5 and 6, things start to get back in balance, and the scale will begin to reflect the true fat-loss...which, as mentioned before is rate-limited.

Individuals vary, but max weight loss runs about 2 pounds per week...under extremely optimal conditions... or 1% of body weight (whichever is the lower number). So don't use the scale as an excuse to undermine your progress. Even when the scale is in a stall, fat loss can be occurring.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I started strict induction 3 days ago and have had very little, if any, weight loss on the scale. I do feel better so I will just plunge forward and see what happens!!
Kizz4k : I use the Mio drops as well in my water. I try to drink one of my 32 oz bottles without it then one I use it. I get tired of just plain water too!!

Thanks for the reminder, PenPen13. I had read that article once before, and need to be reminded about the stupid scales and why they lie

Also nice to be reminded to drink more water, I don't think I drank near enough yesterday. Good luck to everyone and Princessmommy, keep your head up, I'm with you and feel your pain right now when the scales go the wrong way for no apparent reason

Welcome all newcomers to this thread. I think that mydear started this little subcommunity of the Atkins board-- for people mainly doing induction (I'm on extended induction, and I mean extended!) who want to do a challenge on a monthly basis.
We are all extremely focused and serious about losing the pounds.

Yes, your weight is going to vary. You will go down, and you will go up. When the scale goes up, mark it, but don't obsess about it. Don't overworry it. If the scale went up because you ate too much yesterday or two days ago, you know why the scale went up. If you have been eating the same exact foods every day for a week (and I've done that), then don't worry about it. It is an anomaly and the scale will eventually go down. This little community - the February group -- is here to help figure out what is happening if you do not see a change over several weeks. Otherwise, we are here to be cheerleaders for you - it doesn't hurt to have folks go - YEAH! you did really well and you can continue and become a healthier, slimmer you! There are a lot of keys to weight loss -- our way is to stick to the plan and plug along, day by day. That's what the big losers -- like mydear and Shelly -- do! my three and a half cents.

hey there...new to posting on this site...
I lost 10 pounds in January with my lowest weight of 150 Saturday morning. I had a cheat day Saturday and jumped back to 160 the next morning! It was as if all of my hard work vanished! I think the weight gain is temporary and mostly water retention because my weight dropped 5 pounds. Anyways I have learned my lesson that a cheat day is not worth it! I am hoping for the 140 by the end of the month.

2/1 - 152
2/2 - 150
2/3 - 160
2/4 - 155
2/5 - 154.6

But you can't give up or get discouraged! It's just a bump and ya gotta keep pushing along. Very frustrating i'll admit though! Lol!

I haven't gone through the thread so far but wanted to say I'M BACK

Managed to only gain 5.8 lbs after 2 weeks in Mexico, although I suspect a lot of that is water weight from yesterday (hoping anyway).

PrincessMommy...yep that 160 number sticks in my head like a nightmare. And blowing my weight loss after finally seeing the scale moving downward, it was a huge wake up call that cheats are not worth it. Even Girl Scout cookies are not worth it right now.

B - 2 eggs and a small dab of sour cream, coffee with half 'n half
L - will be a quarter chicken leg
D - TBD

work out - running a mile at lunch + walking to equal 30 minutes on the treadmill.

2/1 - 152
2/2 - 150
2/3 - 160
2/4 - 155
2/5 - 154.6
2/6 - 153.2 <-- the number is dropping so quickly that I am positive the weight gain from the 3rd was all water retention.

Good morning everyone! I look forward to reading all of y'all's posts! Thanks for all the encouraging words!

Yesterday, I tried to stay very strict with my induction foods, but could not help but to include my cheesecake muffins as much as I tried not to eat them.

Really February is a hard time of year for some of us. I am a very outdoorsey person, so being cooped up with a one year old all day is sometimes challenging. I try to stay positive, but really, I am ready for Spring, or at least some sunshine here in Ohio.

B-three egg omelette with cheese/4 pieces of bacon/34 oz Crystal Lite Peach Bullini (total: 3 carbs) This will literally keep me full til dinner if I allow it, I have to make myself eat a light lunch

L-Pork Rinds 2 cheesecake muffins(2 carbs)18 oz Grape Milo

D-2 cups salad greens/grilled chicken breast/homemade ranch salad dressing /bacon/cheese toppings (total carbs: 6) 34 oz peach Bullini

S-two cheesecake muffins (2 carbs)

February Goal: 190

2/1: 196.4
2/2: 196.0
2/3: 196.8
2/4: 196.4
2/5: 197.4
2/6: 195.2 (finally!)

Happy Wednesday! As of this morning I am down ten pounds from when I started Induction on 1/28. That's including one cheat meal (which I agree...it's hardly worth it...took me three days just to shed the water weight again...not to mention I felt really weird the next day, like, tingling in my face and hands).

So I'm pretty happy with that!

B- some mozzerella, and couple of stuffed olives, and a piece of homemade
beef jerky (weird breakfast, I know...but good!)
L - probably tuna salad

D - not sure yet!

WOE: whatever works
Good morning!
I'm up 1.5lbs. 212.4. We've just started back at the gym this past week, so between that & salty brisket for dinner two nights in a row, I'm not terribly upset at the gain. It'll balance out by the end of the month (it BETTER!!).

Wednesday is our night off from the gym cuz it's CRAZY busy on Wednesdays so I'm actually cooking dinner tonight. (Normally, I cook all of our meals for the week on Sunday & then we just add a veggie, reheat & eat after the gym). Tonight I'm tossing spaghetti squash with zucchini, a little mushroom and onion, garlic, spinach and italian sausage with a fresh spinach salad on the side. I just can't make up my mind if I want to make an alfredo sauce for it or just use olive oil and oregano.... suggestions?

The rest of the day is:

B - atkins tex-mex
L - beef merlot w/broccoli

coffee, water and iced tea

Hope everyone has a GREAT day!
