You guys are making really FANTASTIC progress! You may be seeing some fluctuations on the scale, but you're all fitting into smaller clothes ALREADY and the clothes tell a lot more truth than the scale. The scale will *eventually* tell you what you want to hear, but the pants are already speaking the truth.

I am just in awe of you guys! I was not even CLOSE to where you are when I was at that point of my journey. I think I was lucky to have Big Stevie -- and Dairy Queen and Shelly on the Challenge threads -- to be far enough ahead of me to show me what *could* happen for me if I just stuck with the plan.

Seriously, though, I know it's a cultural thing but I genuinely don't understand why people in other cultures don't seem to value a larger rear end the way we do. I think it gives a very nice, womanly silhouette so it's very attractive. But my good friends in college were always trying to spanx their butts into submission. I honestly don't understand it.

I also think a large, high rear end looks great on men. Like, if you look at athletes like Didier Drogba, Samir Nasri, Karim Benzema, and Nicklas Bentdner, I think their butt silhouettes make them look stronger and more athletic. I think it makes their legs look longer and stronger.

I make fun of my booty, but I love it to death!!! I definitely feel sexier knowing I have killer curves. Oh and ditto on the men. Although my favorite is the tennis player calf on a guy....

I have no butt... one of the first things I told my boyfriend before we met... was hoping he wasn't a butt man. Now BOOBS I got them...lots and lots of them... lol

Ok so the pants fit and maybe it's cuz I've been wearing baggy stuff... they seem to look ok, I might wear them saturday when I come to work. Wore super baggy capris to work tonight. Think I might need to give them up now. I can pull them out about 6 inches even my belt is kinda too big. Guess I'm gonna have to go shopping. I just don't want to spend a lot on something I won't be in very long... I'm a cheapskate.

I think I'll buy a pair of sz 14s to have something new to fit into... instead of just all the old stuff.

Good to see you, Kiwi! I'm not kidding, I was honestly wondering what was going on in the South Pacific because I hadn't seen you, Beetle, or Moniruth in a little while.

Way to go, Laura! You have planted your flag in the ground!

You're not being a cheapskate by not spending too much money on clothes that aren't your goal size, you're being smart. I'm the IDIOT who spent about $1,000 (at least) on size 12 clothes. Ugh! I think that's a symbol of how little faith I had in myself -- I clearly didn't *believe* I would be able to go below 12. Now I've got three pairs of Kut From The Kloth jeans, an adorable Michael Kors skirt with lug zippers and a back vent, three pairs of Under Armour workout pants (that I actually got a lot of wear out of so those were kind of worth it), two Ralph Lauren suit jackets, a Tahari suit and multiple J. Crew, Talbots, and Ann Taylor skits that were supposed to be my "investment" in a professional wardrobe that I could wear at goal. A little bit more faith in myself and in my plan could have saved me a lot of money.

Go to thrift stores. I have gotten so many great pieces of clothing. I have been shocked actually at the stuff people give away. I have been through at least four different sizes. I am just about ready to go down more size in pants which is my goal size when I started, but who know, maybe I will go even lower. I am not going to buy "new" clothes until I have been at the same size for two or three months. Then I am going to spend a lot!!!

Ann Taylor, my favorite *swoon*

I have so little faith in myself I ordered clothes in the same size instead of sizing down!

Big Stevie, I am not surprised by what people give away because I personally have given THOUSANDS of dollars worth of clothes to ARC Thrift Stores in the past two years, sizes 18 through 24! There are some really great finds for short-plus sized ladies in the Denver Metro area this year

I agree, I don't want to spend too much on clothes until i reach my goal weight, especially after giving away so many clothes already. I bought stuff on clearance online for less than $10.

I hope you post some pics when you go on your shopping spree Big Stevie! =)

I have been in St. Louis for 2 years now and have only bought 2 pair of capri new..all the rest of my clothes have come from the GoodWill. I wanted something new to look forward to. I still only paid 16.00 for the jeans as they were on sale. I also got a new tank top... it was pink I just love pink. I figure the shirt will fit for a long time. I lose on the top last and even when I lose there's still a lot there.

I washed my favorite pair of capris for the last time... they went in the pile to go back to Goodwill.... I got my 3.00 worth of use out of them though.

One-year Atkinsversary

Today is the day! I started the Atkins diet on this date one year ago, 11 May 2012. You guys know me so you know that it's been a step by step process. I'm not the *fastest* loser, but I haven't quit so I've made progress.

Monthly Weight History
11 May 2012: 235 pounds
11 June: 225 pounds (-10 pounds)
11 July: 215 pounds (-10 pounds)
11 August: 206.5 pounds (-8.5 pounds)
11 September: 198 pounds (-8.5 pounds)
11 October: 196.5 pounds (-1.5 pounds)
31 October: 189 pounds (-7.5 pounds)
30 November: 186.5 pounds (-2.5 pounds)
29 December: 181.5 pounds (-5 pounds)
31 January: 172.5 pounds (-9 pounds)
28 February: 167 pounds (-5.5 pounds)
31 March: 159.5 pounds (-7.5 pounds)
30 April: 156 pounds (-3.5 pounds)
11 May 2013 (today): 152 pounds (-4 pounds)

Total scale loss to date: 83 pounds

Photo order: (1) 235 pounds, 11 May 2012; (2) 215 pounds, 11 July; (3) 189 pounds, 31 October; (4) 167 pounds, 28 February; (5) 152 pounds, 11 May 2013.

Starting Measurements (235 pounds)
Ankles: Left 11.00", Right 11.00"
Calves: Left 19.50", Right 19.50"
Thighs: Left 27.00", Right 28.50"
Hips: 46.00"
Waist: 38.00"
Upper Arms: Left 15.00", Right 15.00"
Wrists: Left 7.00", Right 7.00"

Photo order: (1) 235 pounds, 11 May 2012; (2) 215 pounds, 11 July; (3) 189 pounds, 31 October; (4) 167 pounds, 28 February; (5) 152 pounds, 11 May 2013.

Current Measurements (152 pounds)
Ankles: Left 9.50", Right 9.75"
Calves: Left 15.50", Right 15.75"
Thighs: Left 21.75", Right 22.50"
Hips: 38.00"
Waist: 29.75"
Upper Arms: Left 12.25", Right 12.50"
Wrists: Left 6.25", Right 6.00"

Noticeable improvements in my life
  • I no longer suffer chronic lower back pain.
  • I can walk long distances without pain and/or exhaustion.
    - Which means I don't have to pay to take a taxi to and from the market because I can now comfortably walk 1.5 miles to the market and then walk 1.5 miles home while carrying my groceries.
  • I can comfortably stand for hours at department meetings and social events.
    - Which means I don't have to sit down and wait for colleagues and/or friends to gravitate over to me.
  • I can run across the street to beat a yellow light.
  • I have enough strength, stamina and flexibility to comfortably detangle my hair in the shower.
  • I can bend down and tie my shoes or fasten ankle-straps without feeling faint.
  • I can wear ankle-strap clogs or strappy sandals without having "cankle" bulges.
  • My arms and legs don't lose circulation when I sleep.
  • I can cross my legs.
  • I can zip boots up over my calves.
  • My (still chunky) calves finally fit into "skinny" jeans.
  • I can wear my smartphone holder on my bicep, instead of having to strap it around my forearm.
  • I can actually fit into items labeled "One Size Fits Most."
  • I can now put on a sports bra without strangling myself in the process.
  • I don't overflow my seat on the bus.
    - Which means I no longer have to sit smushed against some stranger.
  • I've lost fat from my fingers, wrists, and feet.
    - Which means I can wear shoe styles that I thought I would never wear again, and cherished bracelets and rings that my parents and grandparents gave me.
  • I have lost "face fat" and can once again see my bone structure.
    - Which means I now look like I'm actually related to the rest of my family.
Photos: +/- 220-230 pounds (July 2011 vacation) compared to 152 pounds (May 2013)

Measured Size Loss From 11 May 2012 To 11 May 2013
Ankles: Left -1.50", Right -1.25"
Calves: Left -4.00", Right -3.75"
Thighs: Left -5.25", Right -6.00"
Hips: -8.00"
Waist: -8.25"
Upper Arms: Left -2.75", Right -2.50"
Wrists: Left -0.75", Right -1.00"

I now eat substantially smaller portions, following Dr Atkins's instructions to "eat when hungry" and "eat until satisfied, not stuffed." Which is a lot easier now that I've taken the time to learn what "hunger" is -- as opposed to "boredom" or "celebration" or "social interaction" or "free pastries in the faculty lounge" or any of the other fifty thousand non-hunger reasons that I ate massive quantities of food. I stayed low-carb on my birthday, every holiday, during family gatherings and weddings, at every work event, trips to my favorite restaurants, and my aunts' "special" meals. I enjoy the fun, because my life is not about food when I'm out with colleagues (or friends or family) and I avoid the shared platters of cheese fries, nachos, and the stuff that people call "you've gotta try this." I've learned that I don't *have to* eat unless I'm hungry. And that being at a restaurant or at the movies isn't the same thing as being hungry. And I've realized that 50 other people will tell my aunts how awesome their homemade pasteles are, so they don't really need my feedback. And that I can just say "yeah, it was great" when colleagues ask if I tried the "incredible" pasta salad at an event because nobody will notice or care that I didn't actually eat any of it. I honestly don't have great willpower. I never learned how to deny myself things that I want. It's just that, right now, what I really want is to be strong and fit. Somehow, saying "no" to birthday cake feels like saying "yes" to things I want more.

Photos: +/- 220-230 pounds (July 2011 vacation) compared to same dress at 152 pounds (May 2013)

I don't know what I would have done without the Induction Babies -- especially my Atkins brother, Big Stevie, who has been with me throughout the process, showing me the way to better health. I'm quite emotional right now, so I'm glad you guys can't actually see me! HUGS!

HaHa! Thank you! Today isn't my *real* weigh-in day so I totally forgot to update my stats...

I'm just so HAPPY to have made it to the 1 year mark! I'm glad I haven't let myself down or let down the people who believed in me. Losing the weight is great, but I'm *especially* glad that I haven't let my family and friends down after all they've done to support me.

Awesome Trillex. You have kept at it for a long time, and it clearly shows. I like your list of little things that have changed. It is those little things that keep me going. It is like a little surprise and wonderful moment every time I discover a new one. When we get fat, we don't realize the little things we loose along the way. losing weight restores them. You look great. Thanks for letting us share in your excitement and process.

Congratulations on hitting the 40 pound mark, Mother Goose! That seems PERFECT to me, since it's Mother's Day and you're Mother Goose. It's like a Mother's Day present to you from you.

Honestly, I think you looked beautiful in your before pic in the dress, now you're a beautiful brick house!

You make me want to go measure parts I wont even look at in a mirror =)
Your new avatar is SO CUTE! I also loved the picture of you with your husband, though, because you both look so rockstar. But this pic is super adorable!

You're absolutely right! I've lost weight so much faster than I put it on and I should remember that fact every day. I think I've just been so immersed in the process that it *feels* like every bit of progress has been a battle and has taken a long time. Realistically, though, I've come pretty far much more rapidly than I expected. To be honest with you, if someone had told me a year ago that my back pain would be completely gone today, that alone would have felt like an amazing achievement that I would have paid everything I have in order to get.

I think the measurements are really helpful. For example, my calves got smaller between my measuring day on 30 April and when I was measured yesterday. My waist, hips, and thighs stayed the same but my calves made progress and I found that interesting and helpful to know.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY, EVERYONE!

My mom passed away a few years ago, so I sent my dad a gift because he's been a great mom since we lost her. And I sent my grandmothers perfume because they've both reached the point where they just stone cold tell us at Christmas what they want for Mother's Day -- I think they were tired of getting 20 silk scarves and a dozen decorative plates every year. HaHa! My dad's mother lives in France, so she'll open her gift when they celebrate Mother's Day later this month -- for some reason, France always has to have a different schedule from this hemisphere. Most of her children and grandchildren live here so we all send packages on target for US Mother's Day, and I think she likes looking at the unopened packages for a while because she's never said anything about our sending them too early. Our cousins who live in France say that our grandmother updates the ladies at the market on a daily basis about how many "gifts of love" she has received.

Wow Trillex, you seriously look like a completely different person! You go girl (is a phrase I cannot pull off in real life - thank God I don't actually have to say it out loud )!

In Transylvania, we celebrate Mother's Day on the very first Sunday of May. The British celebrated it in March - seems like almost every other culture has a different date for it.

awww thanks Trillex.

I love that you can see how tone your arms are in your T-shirt because there is space between where your arm stops and where your body starts. Mine have no space, yet.

I think I will dig up my tape measure and give it a good starting point now and see how far it goes by the time I reach goal. Maybe it will help if I lose some measure when I stall on the scale.

I don't know what I would have done without the Induction Babies -- especially my Atkins brother, Big Stevie, who has been with me throughout the process, showing me the way to better health. I'm quite emotional right now, so I'm glad you guys can't actually see me! HUGS!

Hey, Laura! I'm probably the LEAST qualified person in the forum to address this since I only weigh once per month. But a couple of things occurred to me... Your weight has bounced between 226 and 221 this month, which suggests to me that fluid fluctuations are making it difficult for the scale to tell *exactly* what type of fat loss progress you're making. I know that it's frustrating but I don't think there's anything you can do except wait for things to settle.

It's not a myth, it is *factually* more difficult for women to accurately track their fat loss progress on a day-to-day basis. Pre-contest male bodybuilders can track their fat loss progress fairly accurately (to a reasonable degree) on a day-to-day basis by using a combination of scale weight, site measurements in millimeters, and "caliper" measurements but female bodybuilders have never been able to reliably do the same thing with the same tools. It's not even a time of month issue with women because pre-contest female bodybuilders typically have too little bodyfat to menstruate (sorry, TMI), but they still have significant enough fluid fluctuations to make it difficult to track their fat loss progress as closely as their male counterparts can. And pre-contest female bodybuilders typically use prescription diuretics to keep fluid levels controlled but they still have fluctuations that they can't control.

With that said, even men who are *not* at pre-contest levels of bodyfat (5-8% bodyfat) often have fluid fluctuations that make it difficult to track their progress. Bodybuilders call the space between "normal" levels of bodyfat and "cut" levels of bodyfat "no man's land" or "the uncanny valley," and "whooshes" are a common phenomena during that stage of fat loss. They'll work and work and work, cut and cut and cut, and see no physical changes on the scale or in their measurements or in the mirror. But they they'll wake up one morning, go to the bathroom and see 5 pounds gone from the scale, an inch gone from their torso, and suddenly they can see their abs and see striations on their shoulders and thighs. It drives everyone crazy -- even experienced bodybuilders will often go through periods of serious depression during a "cut" because it's terribly frustrating -- but the nature of the human body is that humans can't control the output, we can only control what we put into it and how hard we make it work.

As long as you're carefully controlling what you put into your body -- by feeding it less than it needs on a daily basis -- the body HAS TO turn to its stored fuel to make up for the deficit. Even if you don't immediately see the results on the scale, you can trust that your body is pulling fuel from storage whenever you haven't fed it all of the fuel it needs to operate. Even people who are *not* on a diet that limits their calories or carbs often test positive for the metabolites of fat burning when they're tested after sleeping for 8 or 10 hours because the body still needs fuel during the period when the person isn't feeding it and so the body turns very efficiently to using stored fat.

This is the information that has allowed me to weigh only once per while still *feeling* as if I were making progress on a daily basis -- I knew absolutely without question that I have been eating at a level that HAS TO cause my body to use stored fuel. I can just look at my food tracker at the end of the day and *see* progress. I can't tell *how much* progress I will see at the end of the month -- because the body is going to do what it's going to do and I can't control that -- but when I *know* that I haven't eaten enough food to store fat, then I *know* that I'm making progress because my body isn't unique enough to violate a basic law of physics.

To be honest with you, this is somewhat *easy* for me to believe because I grew up around bodybuilders so I've seen really strange things happen with fat loss. But even when my rational mind is sure about what I'm doing, some parts of my brain still tell me that I *can't* go any farther. That's why I told you guys about how strongly I committed to size 12 because -- despite my belief in the math and my belief in my diet -- I still *felt* like there was going to be a point that I wouldn't be able to move beyond. But the math proved that *feeling* wrong. I just kept going and the laws of physics kept working even when I doubted them. The body is incredibly frustrating but it can (pretty much) be relied upon to do what it's supposed to do, even when we can't *see* the mechanics.
