Snacks for on a long haul flight to Australia?

Hi all,

I was just reading the other thread about long car travel, but I am flying to Australia and the whole ordeal is more than 24 hours (with 2 small kids and a DH who hates flying!).

I have pre-ordered my non-carb meal on the airline, but there will be no snacks so I guess Atkins bars are the only option? Any ideas welcome!

Thanks!

I've read before on these boards some people like to take bacon with them on their long flights.
Also you may consider some cold meat, if you have the chance to cook before leaving you could always try with a very traditional beef (or whatever else) roast, sliced in advance and packed up. It can be a snack both for you and your family.

Otherwise I could say...almonds, nuts...but they are not so induction friendly.

even though it's induction, take macadamia nuts instead of atkin's bars. I think those are really iffy. macadamia nuts cost a lot but are lower carb than the others. of course atkins bars cost a fortune too!

I agree that nuts are not allowed on induction, of course, so I strongly urge you NOT to get more than you can eat on your flight and stop as soon as you get to allowed food.

I just think meat is a difficult option on a plane. it smells, you can't keep it cold, it makes a mess when you eat it, etc.

of course you can bring shelled hardboiled eggs for your first meal, or egg salad, but not for the whole trip, it gets too warm after awhile. just chill the eggs in a cooler till you get to the airport so they are really cold, wrap them in something like a sweater that will insulate them to keep them cold.

Yeah Australia is a long flight. For me, Seattle to San Fransisco to Syndey to Adelaide was 24 hours of flying or waiting. My previous longest flying leg was 10 hours -- so 14 hours (SFO to Sydney) was a bit long, very boring in spite of 3-4 movies. Hopefully you will have personal video screens. It is amazing the number of movies one has already seen. If you read, I would recommend a kindle or the similar to bring lots of books. Drink as much water as you can while on the flight. Also get up and walk around. Those seats are killers (unless you are flying business or better)

I did not do my trip on Atkins.

I would recommend eating a really big breakfast prior to starting the trip. May stop near the first airport. A 3-4 egg omelet with veggies and 1-2 sides of sausage or bacon is quite filling.

I would recommend taking along nuts (2-3 pound) -- almonds, walnut and hard cheese. The cheese is the least stable.

You could take sliced meat - get a roasted chicken, slice it up and put it in baggies prior to departure. Maybe pack it in disposable ice pack or ice to keep it cool until you enter the airport. At least on my flight, they did feed you a couple of times. However, I do not recall it being very LC friendly. I do not know if they have a LC meal. Maybe a gluten free??

Also get food at the airport layovers. The selection is much better than what is on the plane.

I'd be VERY careful with the nuts, they're some of the most calorie dense foods on the planet.

Easy stuff to take on a plane:
Bacon in a baggie.
Half a dozen peeled hard boiled eggs.
Meat of some kind.
Celery filled with cream cheese.
Beef Jerky (check the labels, some has quite a bit of added sugar!).

Thanks to all for your replies, I think I am going to definitely have a bigger breakfast than normal, and chance it with my low carb meal. We are flying Singapore Airlines which have that as an option. I didn't go for the gluten free version as it is full of rice crackers and other unsuitable options.

I will definitely take pork rinds, and I know that they have cheese and cracker snacks in the plane so I will have the cheese and dump the crackers.

In Singapore we have a short layover, and I know that there are almost no low carb options there. Asian snack food is delicious but not gluten free or low carb, my best bet is sadly to go to Burger King and get a burger with no bun.

It is only 24 hours and I think I will be fine...

Thanks again!

Please NO PEANUTS!! Someone may have an allergy. I am always so nervous when my DD has a fly. Most people with a peanut allergy can't even be near them without having a reaction.

Also, I would think that people around you wouldn't be too happy about HB eggs. They stink

Pistachios are only 4 net carbs per 1/2cup(shelled) I take them to the movies with me all the time. It takes a long time to eat them too.

String cheese will last for a long time un-refrigerated.

Pistachios! Excellent idea! Thank you cfine!

I won't be taking HB eggs, and I never take peanuts anyway.

So far I think it's pork rinds, (also my kids like them...who would have thought?), and now pistachios. String cheese is also a great idea, also for the kids!

Cool...I feel like we're getting somewhere people!

American Cheese crisps (nuke American Cheese until crispy in microwave)
Broccoli and Cauliflower hold up well without refrigeration - you can buy individual servings of ranch dip that don't have to be refrigerated also
Starkist Tuna pouches with some packets of mayo or leave plain
Pepperoni and summer sausage
Babybel or laughing cow cheese

Eyedoc I forgot about those tuna pouches- thank you! Babybel cheese is a great option too, not too smelly either! My DH loves summer sausage so that is also a healthy snack for the family on the plane. Otherwise the kids will just be high on sugar the whole time.

Awesome! Thanks! The list just keeps getting better...
