I really want tuna salad but
I can't have mayo or miracle whip because it has soybean oil in it. Can I put just mustard in it? Every recipe i see online adds yogurt or some kind of oil. I'm on induction and cant eat yogurt. I checked the recipes here, but can't find it. So can I make tuna, egg, and mustard?

That would be good...
You can also MAKE some mayo, using olive oil or some other oil you CAN eat. The following is from "500 low-carb recipes" by Dana Carpender (and yes, I spelled her name right. I RECOMMEND this book!!) Quote:
Here's another recipe: Ingredients 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 eggs 2 tablespoons white vinegar 2 cups vegetable oil Directions In the container of a food processor or blender, combine the mustard powder, salt, eggs and vinegar. Set the food processor on medium speed and gradually drizzle in the oil while it runs. Transfer to a container with a lid and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Ingredients 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard 3/4 cup vegetable or olive oil salt and pepper to taste Directions Combine the egg, garlic, lemon juice and mustard in the container of a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth, then blend on low speed while pouring oil into the blender in a fine stream as the mixture emulsifies and thickens. As you can see, there are a variety of variations. The BASIS for mayo is the egg/oil emmulsion. Play around with it a bit! |

Thank you !!!! This hypothyroidism is really messing with me. Aside from the fact that I can't eat anything raw, now I can't eat soy of any kind. So these recipes are great! My food list has become really boring and bland.

Ugh. I've got a good friend (and local weight-loss buddy/gym partner) who's dealing with thyroid issues. I feel for you.
My hubby's made mayo several times, at least once using my immersion blender, but we've never done it in the "real" blender. (He mostly hand-whips. Masochist.) But it's totally do-able, and you can just use whatever oil you like. It (like all mayo) DOES have raw egg. If you're concerned about that, you can purchase liquid, pasteurized eggs. (Frankly, we just use local eggs, wash the shells, & don't worry about it.) |

@princessmommy My mom put miracle whip on sandwiches and burgers, so I grew up eating it. I love it too.
@LiterateGriffin I really appreciate that you posted the recipes. I have been afraid to add oil back into my diet since I have been losing without it. |

I was going to mention the sour cream.
Can you make mayo with a kitchen aide mixer or just a blender? Now I'm curious about home made mayo. |

Ghost, any of the above. Heck -- my husband makes it with a WHISK! (But then, he's a masochist.)

If it's just a soy problem, I believe hellman's makes an olive oil based mayo.
Edit: NM just looked it still has soybean oil in it. Last edited by Medic2038; 06-23-2012 at 10:29 PM.. |

Yes, I've seen both varieties (olive and canola )in the store. But while the ingredient list on their "regular" mayo is very clean -- mostly real foods, with one preservative at the end -- the ingredients of these "healthy" formulas was downright scary! It wasn't mayo, it was chemical soup!
