Not in ketosis--what're the common probs?

Bought some strips this afternoon and I'm not in ketosis. What are the most common causes?

I really don't think I'm going over 20 carbs--can't see how I can be. At 2-3 cups of those veggies each day plus some salad dressing...otherwise, I am eating MEAT. (And getting tired of it--will have to browse the recipes!)

How many days have you been inducting in lc? Usually takes me 3-4days to get there. And check and make sure that there is no sugar in anything you consume.

Takes me 4 days too. Make sure your eating butters and fats. When I add more of the fats I go into Ketosis faster.

Thanks!! I've been doing the induction for over 2 weeks--maybe not enough fat 'cause I KNOW it wasn't sugar.

BUT LAST NIGHT I WAS!!! Not a dark purple, but definitely a color other than the tan, so that's great! Now I feel like I'm getting somewhere.

I'm on decaf coffee, and I added a few more carbs and a bit of fat. THANK YOU!!!

I unfortunately just cheated, ugh!!!! I made zucchini bread for the first time and tried it, OMG so good....Will not do that again. Only 2 small pieces, but I am very mad at myself. My husband said stop beating myself up so much and just move on, so back and being good. Wish you all luck....

Zucchini bread? Well, I just had a tad of good ole Kentucky bourbon. Not very much, but boy did it go down smoooooth (ly).

I'm not sure what my falling point will be--not z bread, but maybe a good chewy French bread. Or some really good crackers with the cheese. Or, I know--we have some bourbon cream in the house. Now THAT, my friend, is something else altogether. I think I'll go hide it...

Ya know, I think the "food porn" site ought to be stuff we CAN'T have!

I had wine last night and that took me right out of the ketosis I've been in for the last 10 days. It was good but I'm not sure it was worth it!

Hi I'm also finding it hard to stay in ketosis, I've been doing induction for 4 weeks and a day but while I do get into ketosis it's normally straight after a huge workout and then I'm out of it the following day.

I lost about 17lbs in the first two weeks but I've been stuck at 18st 2lbs for over two weeks and that's despite working out at least 6 times a week for 1.5 hours. I do a very short weights programme then two cardio exercises that take about 50 mins then swim for 20 mins, sauna, hydropool. With this sort of workout routine I would expect to be losing weight anyway but as I said for the last 2 weeks not a single pound. When I check my ketone strips after a workout it's dark purple but by mid day the next day there are no ketones showing.

My diet consists of scrambled egg with cheese & butter, lots of steak, chicken breast, bacon, sausage, fried eggs, salad tomato, lettuce, cucumber, peppers, mushrooms, onion, most of what I cook is fried in extra virgin olive oil.

I drink lots of decaf coffee with skimmed milk and a half teaspoon of sweetener, I guzzle loads of fresh water. I have an Atkins bar every three days or so just to keep the chocolate gremlins at bay.

I'm happy that I can get into ketosis after a workout as it shows that I'm forcing my body to burn fats during a workout but I'm not sure why I'm not staying in ketosis and not losing any more weight.

If anyone has any helpful suggestions or can spot a glaring error please let me know.

wondering what kind of sweetener and how much skim milk you use in your coffee. skim milk is like 12 carbs per cup! Almost twice as much as heavy cream.

Hi,

The Clan - You lost a lot of weight the first 2 weeks, most was water. You body needs to catch up so normally you don't lose for a while then start again. Just give it time. Make sure your drink enough water, because that will slow down weight loss if you don't. As far as the sticks go, they show darker colors at different times of the day. It show nothing to trace in the am (for me) in the afternoon trace and in the evening before bed trace to moderate. The more water you have to drink and the more you pee the more dilutated the ketones will be, so they won't show up dark on the strip. It doesn't mean your not in Ketosis, you are. Give yourself some time. Just remember the weight didn't come on in one month it won't come off in one month either. Good luck....

Just checked the sweetener label and it says aspartame based so I've already decided to drop that.

I have just a dash of milk, probably less than half an eggcup, but I'm also dropping that in favour of cream.

Having read some more threads I think I need to eat less at one sitting and eat more often, also include more veg.

Increase calorie intake and eat FAT!

I was on living low-carb life style for 3 years and returned to my healthy weight in 3-4 months. My GF was obese. I actually started the diet just to motivate her to going into the diet because I was just slightly overweight. Ended up doing it for 3 years as I have seen a lot of benefit. I reduced my weight and gained muscle, what more I never got sick in 3 years! Not even a flu!

But my GF never confronted with herself, her weight and her eating habits. She just watched me diet and exercise for 3 years. At one point I got her doing it for 1 month and she lost 10kg. But she secretly continued to eat.
Anyway she thought she was hiding it but you could easily see it from her ever increasing clothing sizes. (She would never weighed herself!!!)

In the end as a last resort, I decided to stop dieting. And started eating as unhealthy as she does. Just wanted to see her destroy myself so that she could understand how I felt. My god, I have eaten cakes and deserts (which made me feel like puke after living so long on low carb).

I gained like 15kgs in a short time and she was like "Oh stop don't do that". "You are hurting your body. This is not you!". So I guess my last strategy worked in the end. She somehow started dieting and exercise. And I hope she continues because now she moved to another country.

In the end what's left with me are the extra weight which I gained during that period Now I am back to low-carb. For the past 3 years I never did the keto test. I just knew that if I continued doing the right things I would see the results.

I initially started with calorie-restriction and started mild exercise for 2 weeks, just to give it a go. But nothing seemed to be moving.

I told to myself "cut the crap and go back to low-carb". This time I wanted to check on my ketones. I cut the carbs in full. As with other people for the first 3 days I had 0 ketones in my urine. On the 4th day I have seen very "dark blue" on the strip. Continued the same way but the color turned lighter and lighter the next 2 days. I think I was like %70 protein and %30 fat. I was also like 1200kcal/day.

So my reasoning as the others, is that my body started breaking proteins and muscles in the lack of enough energy because 1200kcal is really way low than 2300 kcal/day which was recommended for me.

I think your body is breaking muscles because you are not getting enough energy externally. So I suggest you consume more fat. Because that is what I will do. I will go up to 1800-1900kcal and compansate the deficit with fat to keep the fat metabolism going.
