When to test for ketosis?

Hello Please forgive me if this is a typical newbie question, but I can't seem to find the answer in my searches:

When do you begin testing for ketosis? After the first day of induction? The first week?

On average, how long does it take after starting induction for your body to be in ketosis?

I tested 3 days later and it was purple, but I think every body varies.

That's pretty cool that it happens so quickly into it. I'll definitely be tracking this to reassure me I'm doing things right Thank you!

Give it a few days at least. It takes that long to use up the glucose stored in your body before the body changes the way it fuels itself. So using them straight away would just be a waste. No earlier than three days and you might as well give it a week. It will almost certainly have kicked in by then.

I read "The New Atkins for a New You" a couple weeks ago. The authors seem to be the annointed heirs of Dr. Atkins. Book copyright is owned by Atkins Nutritionals, Inc.

I don't recall them even mentioning testing urine for ketones.

I agree. They can be a useful tool, but never let them pull your focus away from the weight loss itself.

Oh absolutely! I've already lost close to 20lbs without any concern over if my body is in ketosis or not. I'm just shocked how effective Atkins in I love it! I'm actually finding this whole process loads of fun and figured testing for ketosis would be a fun little thing to add to it. If I'm not, oh well! I'm still losing and that's what really matters!

You're doing fantastic and you obviously have a great attitude. You sound like me when I was first on Atkins thinking "where has this diet been all my life?"

I think the ketostix can be most useful as you move through the stages of Atkins adding new foods in and seeing how your body reacts to those foods.

That's really what I'm thinking! It feels NOTHING like a diet and that's what I love the most. And the results are astounding

And I think before I move out of induction, I'll start testing to see how my body reacts. Right now, I'm doing way better than I ever expected so it really wouldn't matter to me either way at this point lol

I only know about getting them in the UK, so in case there's any UK based folks thinking of buying some, I present: JFM's guide to buying KetoStix in the UK.

You'll need to go to a pharmacy and ask for Ketostix. They keep them behind the counter and the pharmacist has to be at least on the premises for them to sell them to you. At least they did the last time I bought some.

Boots carry them in their pharmacies, I'd think Superdrug would too. Any big pharmacy. They're used by diabetics, so they're not some kind of total weirdo product that they'll just look at you funny about and go, "Keto-what-now?" Pharmacy staff will be familiar with them.

They should cost around £6 unless they've shot up!

Ask in a firm, confident voice, so they think you buy them all the time, otherwise you might get some smart ass being "funny" about Atkins if you have to start explaining why you want them.

It's not their business. The things aren't prescription. About the only harm I think you could do with them is scratch your eyeball with one. So don't let them put you off.

Keep the lid on nice and tight between uses. Directions are on the pack - it's not exactly hard to work out. Use them once a day at most, at the same time each day. Any colour change at all is what you want. More purple doesn't meant "better" ketosis. And no change at all doesn't mean you aren't in ketosis.

So give 'em a go for what they are worth, but don't place too much importance on them.

The book states that it usually takes 3 days to get into ketosis and each time you cheat it takes an additional 3 days to get back into it.

You should be able to see a difference on the keto sticks within 3 days after you start. It might not be dark purple yet, but there should be some results on it.
