Ketosis

I read here on another post that some people don't use the strips that you can look for the signs. I don't use the strips, this is only my 2nd day. But what are the signs for ketosis.
Thanks Amy

I stay in ketosis and have never had bad breath. The only way I know is checking the keto strips. Just use them once or twice a week to keep in check.

For me it's a metallic taste in the mouth. But I only really notice it when I drink water that hasn't been filtered. Like just plain tap water I haven't put through my filter jug. (Our water here is pretty hard.)

physical symptoms of ketosis can be appetite suppression, feeling colder then normal, metalic taste in your mouth ( your taste buds are tasting the ketone bodies in your saliva), change in the smell of your breath or urine, increase in stamina, having trouble getting normal hours of sleep due to lack of tiredness, and/or increase in thirst.

you can have one or all of then and you are in Dr Atkins ketosis.

I guess your right about those symptoms. I don't have the bad taste or the bad breath. But I do have all the fatigue! Boy do I have fatigue. I can't seem to get up in the AM and want to go to bed early in the PM. I thought it was just me, glad you brought that up. Now I don't feel like I'm going crazy.

This is my 3rd day. Doing great but I'm so tired. It's early and I can't keep my eyes open. Hoping this will pass. I hope this isn't something I have to live with.

You should feel better any day now. The tiredness is "pre" ketosis. You'll feel like a million bucks with a ton of energy soon!! I'm usually tired for about 4-7 days when first starting induction, it'll pass.

The energy will come just hang in there! If it continue start adding salt. It does help, believe it or not.

I was under the impression you will stay in Ketosis the whole time you are losing weight starting with Induction and moving into OWL (Ongoing Weight Loss)

Dr Atkins defined ketosis you can stay in forever as it is just the burning of fats to make energy.

some folk confuse it with ketoacidousis a not good medical condition which atkinseers are in no danger of sufferring unless they are an insulin dependant diabetic with a too low insulin dose, but they would know that they were insulin dependant way before they started atkins and needed to monitor blood glucose levels to determine insulin needs so nobody needs to worry about it really.

So, it is worth it to buy the Ketostrips? If so, how often to I check to see where I am?

Thanks for listing those "symptoms" 2Big! I am normally a hot natured person and since I have been on Atkins, since January 1st, I have been cold at times but definitely cooler than normal and cold hands. I kept saying it was because of the diet but people thought I was nuts. I can live with being colder!

fatty acid metabolism is more efficient then glucose metabolism so less waste heat is produced thus low carbers are colder.

I hit ketosis after day 3 and I am feeling fabulous! Jumped on the scale today (day 4) and discovered I have already dropped 4 pounds! I have quiet a bit of weight to lose though, so I'm not all that surprises.

you are definitely in Ketosis! :-) but if you want some confirmation, swing by wal-mart, go to the diebetic testing supplies, and spend the $4 on some ketostix. They're cheap....and sometimes its REALLY nice to *know* your in ketosis.

Huh. I was thinking that being cold was due to a possible thyroid issue. I do heat up significantly when I eat a decent portion of protein (which makes sense), but in between, I get pretty cold. Especially my feet.

Thanks!

could be low thyroid if you are concerned check with your doc but low carbers have less waste heat then they do high carbing so they will be needing more of their own thermal regulation body temp increase mechanisms to make up for it or they will feel colder.

About the bad breath... I've been in ketosis for a couple weeks now. I don't use strips, however i'm familiar enough with Atkins to know the signs. I chew gum to conquer the infamous bad breath.. *1g carb, 1g sugar alcohol = 0 carb per peice*. However, chewing gum triggers hunger pangs. I drink a lot of water during the day but the gum still triggers it. I think gum is off limits but how then do you get rid of the bad breath of ketosis? Any ideas? Thanks!

Mouthwash or those little disposable toothbrushes with the pearl of toothpaste in them.

If the gum causes hunger pangs, I'd venture to guess that the sugar alcohols ARE affecting you (they do me, just like real sugar). Unless it's a psychological chewing issue.

Thanks Jazzle, maybe i'll keep one of those travel size bottles of mouthwash in my purse or something. Interesting bit about the psychological aspect. I considered that also.

actually ketosis does not cause bad breath. You are off gases only waste ketones acetone which Dr Atkins says smells like ripe fruit and should be similar to the changed smell of your urine.

The bad breath is from either too much nitrogen in your system from too much protein in your diet or your kidneys are not clearing the nitrogen group from protein fracturing if you are drinking lots of water and you need to see your doc about checking your kidney function, AND/OR you are off gassing the volitle oils from the foods you are eating like oinions and garlic if you don't have any oral hygiene issues.

You can use parsley to help filter the off gassing effects of your foods. Gum chewing will not help breath as the smell of the gum disipates quickly.

if you thinkk you have terrible breath because of the taste in your mouth that is not the fact becasue the ketones you are tasting from your saliva are not airborne types

the disposible toothprushes ahve sugar alcohols in them too so if that is your issue don't use those neither.
