Starting Induction tomorrow, Monday June 1

I've tried a couple of different plans lately, but I need some instant gratification for motivation, so I'm going to do two weeks of induction and then decide from there. Anyone with me? I could use some support, advise, morale boosting and friends.....

Hi Katkins -
I want to start tomorrow with you! That is my problem. I am having a hard time getting started. If I can start with someone, it would help! How about if we post what we eat each day for a little accountability.

I don't have a lot in my kitchen, so hopefully after work, I can go shopping. But I will start tomorrow w/good old fashioned eggs & H2o.

Anyway, my goal is a 10 day induction. I DON'T WANT TO CHEAT! I am in with you starting June 1st... (to June 10).

Have a great day.

I see you did the Glycemic Load diet before. Your weight loss results in the next 14 days will be influenced by the amount of carbohydrates you ate on the GL diet. See, when one moves from, let's say, the SAD (Standard American Diet) to Atkins, part of the weight lost during the first days of Induction will be water. Your body normally stores a few hundred grams of glycogen and this glycogen is stored with 3-4 parts water. As you limit your net carbohydrate intake to less than 20 g during Induction, the body is burning through these glycogen stores, so you are also losing the water with which the glycogen was stored... and this adds up to a few pounds. This means that if your carbohydrate intake was very low to start with, you might not see this "water whooshie" most people experience.

However, take body measurements too. You might lose inches even when you feel the scale doesn't love you.

At the end of the 14 days, use the charts in the book (Chapter 13, p. 158, in DANDR 2002) to determine your degree of metabolic resistance and see how you did. However, don't evaluate your Induction results only in terms of weight loss---ask yourself how you feel, how your energy levels are, whether your appetite decreased and so on.

Why not give Induction two full weeks, so that you are able to analyze your results based on the tables in the book? Who knows, you might lose a couple more pounds during days 11-14, find out that you have a low metabolic resistance, get excited about your results and the foods you can enjoy on Atkins, and decide that this is the WOE you want to follow for life.

I hope you all have two great weeks!

Kila Lee - glad to have you start with me. I need to shop tonight, but so far, my plan for today is:
B 1 egg, microwave scrambled with a little cheese
2 strips bacon
S 1 hard boiled egg
L 1 chicken thigh, salad with blue cheese dressing
S ?
D 4 oz leftover steak, salad with vinaigrette

I also walk for 40 minutes on my lunch hour most days.

Sandra2005 - yes girl, get in here. We need all the help we can get and will step up to help you, too!

jeans!! - your test worked, now get in here and join us. Pretty soon you'll be wearin' those jeans instead of wishin' for them! One of my very first weight loss goals was to wear REAL jeans, with a zipper and everything, and man does it feel good!

johnny31 - you are so right about what can happen when you switch plans. I was reasonably low on carbs and drink at least eight glasses of water everyday, so don't know if I'll see the initial water weight loss or not. I'm just looking for some instant gratification that I know LC can provide, and that will carry me through for another two weeks. Will you hang with us?

By the way, I am a daily weigher - I always say I'm only going to weigh once a week - but that's never gonna happen, so I'll just keep doing what I do. I only record it on my calendar once a week, usually Sundays, but for the purpose of this thread, I'm going to switch it to Mondays. Today I was 181.8 and on June 30 I plan to be 170. I know that's more than two pounds per week, the healthy recommendation, but I need some results NOW and am willing to work extra hard for them.

So tell me your goals!

goals, goals, goals.... hmmm start with mamny little ones.. since this past week I have told myself that I want to lose at least 2 lbs a week... small yes i know.. but since last Tuesday I have lost 5 lbs... so thats 3 more then what I wanted too.. but thats good... haha.. :P Last time when i did the intro all I did for a work out was some weights and sit up's and some work outs on demand.. but im soo tierd of being heavy.. I have been over weight my whole life except when I was in high school.. freshmen year I didn't eat.. I was 230 freshmen year and then got down to 140.. then I got on Birth control because of cramps that would kill me.... I think thats one thng that is pushing me so hard, because I need to get back on it because my cramps are coming back to where im in bed the whole im on my period.. and I really do nt want to gain all the weight back..

so when I do get back on it, it's mostly going to be working out every day and wathing what I eat.. But i did go on a long walk yesterday and started jogging on the way back and it kicked my butt lol.....oh and i did 300 crunches in the AM and 300 at night.. I'm really wanting to lose this weight!!!

Sandra - wow! great job... good goals.

Katkins - I am also an every day weigher. I can't help it...

I planned on walking today during lunch, but I teach and they needed the kids to eat in our classes today. aaaaah. bummer. and it is a beautiful day out, too.

Well, I had eggs this AM and cut the coffee back to one cup and a little creamer w/splenda. I actually forgot lunch, so I am going to have to eat something when I get home from work!

I am going to have a chicken breast and mayo. It actually sounds really good right now.

I also plan on going to the gym to walk for 40 min. today.

I tried Atkins in 2003 and had pretty good results. Lost more inches then weight but was still pleased with that. Hubby on the other end lost more. I plan on starting induction tomorrow. I have a few things but will need to pick up more in the AM. It's been a while since I did this so will probably have tons of questions so please bare with me.

Hi Armystolehim04 and MFit4Me, glad you're joining us. Well I did pretty good so far today except that I forgot that nuts aren't allowed on induction and took some with me to work for a snack. I only ate a few before I thought "I better look this up". I counted them, though. I only have 4 carbs left for the day, so I need to use them wisely. Walked on my lunch again, but it was so darn hot we stopped after 35 minutes. Hopefully I will burn a few calories tonight doing some badly needed housework. Had company over the weekend and didn't get to it.

I'm excited to learn more about all of you so we can get each other through this. It's gonna be tough, but so SO worth it.

hi everyone, i started induction today so just a day behind you. i'm definitely in need for a thread that makes me accountable.

Foodwise its been good so far. I'm hoping to make it to the gym tonight as well. I've been trying to get up early to go to the gym first thing but it's just so difficult as i have to be at work by 8am, so i'm now trying to make myself go in the evening.

Catch you later - hopefully i'll be able to say i stuck to plan and went to the gym!

Hi ShastaCat - I've never been one to get out of here in the morning either, just not enough time to come back home, shower and get ready in time to be at work at 8. Walking at lunch works for me, even though it's not very strenuous. More than I ever used to do! Stick to it, girl!

Hi Everyone,

I started induction yesterday so I'm subscribing. I have actually lurked here for years but have found so many helpful threads that I decided to start posting as an active member.

The Induction Food Porn thread is great--lots of good recipes there. I tried the Boneless Buffalo Bites last night and they were AWESOME.

To my pleasant surprise, I've already lost 1 lb since yesterday! And that's without drinking nearly enough water or doing any exercise. Hopefully incorporating water and exercise will speed things up also. My stick this morning was nice and purple (not deep purple but the second darkest purple) so all is well as far as ketosis.

This is the 4th time I've done this diet and I usually see losses of 10-15 lbs during 2 weeks of induction.

Good luck everyone!

Hi! I also started June 1st! I have done this a couple of times before (after the birth of my first son, and last fall) and am totally committed this time. I am also doing the couch-to-5k training for a change in exercise. I do the Biggest Loser DVDs too. I am a very unimaginative cook, so the Food Porn thread is AWESOME!!
I am just seeing how it goes. Goalwise I have 25 pounds to my pre-pregnancy weight (for DS2) and then 20 more for my pre-pregnancy weight (for DS1). And then another 10 pounds to get to my college "fighting" weight, lol.
Good luck!!! Let's support each other!!

How do you avoid getting rubbery eggs when you cook them scrambled in the microwave? Or you don't? Mine always have a really funny texture.

Yep, the first few days are rough. It takes some time for your body to produce enough enzymes and co-enzymes needed for fatty acid oxidation and until that happens you might experience cravings and the symptoms of the infamous "Induction flu"---fatigue, headaches, faintness, etc. But if you stick it out you'll soon become efficient at using fat, so your blood sugar will stabilize, the cravings will go away and you will simply feel great overall.

Maybe you know this already, but don't be concerned about the color of the ketostix. They only measure the concentration of excess ketones spilled over into the urine, so their color will be affected by the amount of water you drink (dark ketostix may be a sign of dehydration), by the exercise you've been doing, by what you had at your last meal and so on. The color might also not change at all even though you are in ketosis, if you are using all the ketone bodies for energy; it just means you don't have any/enough excess ketones left to register on the stix.

Oh, and the ketones might come from dietary fat or from body fat, so make sure you listen to Dr. Atkins and eat only when hungry or when 6 hours have passed since your last meal and eat just enough to satisfy your hunger without getting full/stuffed, or otherwise you might be overeating and slowing down or stalling your weight loss even though the stix will turn purple/pink.

Changing the color of the ketostix can give you a mental boost, but also look for other signs of ketosis. Did you notice anything else? Nasty breath? Higher energy levels? Thirst?

hi everyone, well i'm shocked. i've stuck to plan today and even made it for a swim tonight. i've been having motivation problems for ages - the intention to start atkins has been there i've just been finding actual starting hard to do. so although it seems like such a small thing i'm really pleased i've got started. yay!

mind you - i promise to set myself a slightly harder goal next!

i tend to notice the 'bad breath' sign of when i'm in ketosis. my body also feels different - hard to explain but i tend to know when i am and when i'm not in ketosis. i used to buy the sticks but would only ever use them for the first week or so to get me in to ketosis and then they'd sit in the cupboard gradually going off. so i've decided not to use them this time, we'll see how that goes!

Hey everyone -
Great to see so many join up for this endeavor! Okay, so yesterday I had 64 oz. water, only one cup of coffee w/splenda and a little creamer, eggs, a chicken breast w/melted swiss and slice of tomato (oops), mayo, 8 olives

Today, I have had:
3 sausages
one cup coffee w/splenda & creamer
chicken salad w/feta cheese
melted cheddar w/4 olives and a touch of salsa (I know, that's prob. not good)
a cup of flavored water (sugarfree)
32 oz. of water so far...

I have not exercised yet.
although I cleaned the house vigorously for hours yesterday after work.
I want to go to the gym tonight for a 40 min. walk.

I have ketostix and need to see where I am at.

THANKS FOR THE ACCOUNTABILITY EVERYONE! It is helping.
I don't have the Atkins flu yet, but I am anticipating it as I have started Atkins MANY times before. I am hoping it doesn't start til after work tomorrow.

KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON!!!

Hi Everyone,

Today was my first day and boy was it hard. I felt very drained and tired. I had chicken for breakfast, tuna with a little light mayo, (1 small can white) 1 stick of weight watchers mozarella cheese, and more chicken for dinner.

For exercise I did one of Jillian Michaels DVD's (Boost Metabolism Burn Fat) and boy did I burn tons of calories.

I've noticed that during induction a lot of you aren't eating any leafy carbs. Is that what we are supposed to do during induction?

Starr - welcome! I had no idea that one could be in ketosis after just one day - I was going to wait two weeks before testing! DUH
Johnny31 - ever since the first time I made eggs in the microwave, I've seldom done them any other way. The trick is to stop them about 45 seconds before they're done, stir quickly and let them finish cooking in the bowl. So light and fluffy! Now, I have to admit I HAVE overdone it myself, and you're right - rubber. For one egg, I go 30 seconds, stir, then 20 seconds and it's done.
Wow, you really know your stuff about this diet - glad you're here. We'll be leaning on you heavily I'm sure!
Clemmaur - welcome. I found that my baby weight came off relatively easy, so you should have great results on this plan. It's the weight that been hanging around forever that's so tough to lose - at least for me. I don't know how I got so out of control.
Kila Lee - glad you are joining us too! Do you have the book? I highly recommend it. If not, you can get the induction acceptable foods list on the Atkins website. You'll find that tomato, salsa and mayo are all no-nos as well as olives. (I'm talking induction)

Anyway, today I had my scrambled egg and two slices of bacon along with two cups of decaf coffee and HWC. No snack this morning. Lunch was a lettuce and cucumber salad with caesar dressing and 4oz of steak. (The steak I was going to have for dinner last night, but got invited to the neighbors instead - yay). For supper I had a "Just for One" broccoli and cheese side dish (frozen) and a salmon burger (frozen from Costco - to die for). A total of 18.4 carbs. Only walked 25 minutes today - it was 81 degrees and SO muggy.

I have a sno-cone maker and will have one of those just about every day with sugar free syrup (0 carb). I have a little digital scale that I bought on eBay, and I weigh everything that's not pre-packaged. It's SO easy to go over when you "eyeball" it, (as Rachael Ray would say.)

Well, I'm very excited to go and try a ketostix test. Who knew?

So how was YOUR day(s)?

Kat

You can have butter, oils and sour cream, but no mayo (or margarine, or yogurt) (according to DANDR)

Ok I just looked up what foods are allowed on induction on the Atkins site and it does say that mayo is allowed. It says to make sure it has no added sugar. I think if doing the Atkins 72 it may not be allowed.

Hmm, you're absolutely right. My mistake. I was reading the list in the book - I have the 2002 edition. The website lists WAY more stuff! Guess I better check it out.

THAT is why i need accountability. Thanks Katkins!

No more tomato or salsa!
had some fried hamburger w/onion tonight. I need to grab my old atkins book and make sure I am on task. I am forgetting if onion is allowed (small amount?).

I am in ketosis however. good news. Right about in the middle (dark pink). That is encouraging.

Remember Atkins is a high fat, moderate protein, low carb diet. Your menu looks very low in fat. Use full fat mayo instead and keep the skin on the chicken. When the Duke University experiment was done, Dr. Atkins recommended a macronutrient breakdown of approximately 65% fat, 5% carbohydrates and 30% protein, so that gives you an idea of how much fat you should be eating. By the way, these are percentages from the total caloric intake.

Also, the body can convert excess protein into glucose, so you certainly don't want to overdo the protein.

Your low energy may partially be due to the lack of fat in your diet. Eating forms of fat with short and medium-chain fatty acids (like coconut oil or butter) helps because the body can directly get ketones out of them. This also means that your ketostix will turn a darker shade of purple, but before you get excited you should know that those are ketones that come from breaking down dietary fat and not body fat. (Bummer!)

I've noticed that during induction a lot of you aren't eating any leafy carbs. Is that what we are supposed to do during induction?
Nope, there is actually a long list of green leafy vegetables you can have: spinach, chard, collard greens, lettuce, arugula, etc. If you are following DANDR 2002, you can have 2-3 cups of them daily. But on the list of "Salad Vegetables" there are also radishes, peppers, mushrooms, cucumbers, celery, jicama... so if you don't like leafy stuff, you don't necessarily have to have it. You also don't have to necessarily eat these raw. Some stuff is better cooked in my opinion, like mushrooms for example. Plus, if you don't like veggies, cooking vegetables often reduces their volume, so you can be done with them faster.

Oh, and if you're following DANDR 2002, you should be eating 3 cups of vegetables daily, measured raw---either 2 cups of "salad vegetables" and 1 cup of "other vegetables" or 3 cups of "salad vegetables". Plus, most of your net carbs should come from veggies.

Mayo is not explicitly on the list in DANDR, but mayo is just eggs, oil and maybe some lemon or vinegar, which are all on the list of acceptable foods... so if you mix them together, the results will also be "legal".

A note here from personal experience. The mayo you find in store usually has sugar added to it. Some people can have it without any problems because the amount of sugar should be very small, but what happens to me is that I stall or get a cephalic response (the cephalic response usually comes when I eat too much of it ) every time I have something that only has tiny quantities of added sugar. So to avoid this, I make my own mayo... which I believe tastes better than the store-bought one, it's just that I'm a lazy gal.

Tomatoes are allowed during Induction. They are on the "Other Vegetables" list in DANDR 2002, so you can have 1 cup of them per day assuming you don't eat any other vegetables from that list.

Salsa can be legal if it's made only from legal ingredients and doesn't have a bunch of sugar in it. Basically it's just tomatoes, garlic, peppers, olive oil, lemon juice, onions and some spices. So you could have it as part of your veggies. I like making my own and dipping jicama or kohlrabi sticks in it, or cheese crackers... I also use it for pizza mushrooms and in my fav avocado & bacon omelet.

Olives are allowed in DANDR 2002. They are limited to 10-20 per day as part of the "Special Category Foods" and they don't count towards your veggie intake.

Onions, like tomatoes, are on the "Other Vegetables" list, so you can have max. 1 cup of them. Just don't forget to measure them raw.

Oh! I see... I must have always overcooked them, because I was waiting until they were done in the center. Thanks for the tip!
