Hey there-
Can I join in?? I began induction on June 1st, too, and would love to receive/offer encouragement and support to those in the same stage! Yay for Day 3!!

I am following Atkins induction for the most part. But after about a year of trial and error, I've realized that I have to stick to a "modified induction." I am a binger, and I need some carbs, about 25, to avoid crashing and burning. Even at 25 carbs, this is not easy!! And I have begun a strict exercise plan, as well. We'll see. Down 4lbs already!! Whooo hoooo .....I'm happy even if it was just water weight

Hope everyone has a great Day 3! -Bethany

Hey everyone! Sounds like everybody is doing well! I do think I have a bit of the "flu" going on--just pretty tired. From past experience though if I can get past the third day I am usually good! I need to get some more veggies--I've been mainly salad and cucumbers, lol. Monday I did my couch-to-5k cardio and yesterday I did a sculpting DVD, so back to some cardio today. I also take walks everyday for a little exercise with my boys.
I read the book years ago, but am going to go check it out from the library so I can freshen up. Do you guys take any vitamin supplements? I take a prenatal as a multivitamin and also an omega 3 pill (doc recommended). Anything else I may be missing on that end? I am not a big vitamin person, but I remember during the restrictive portions of the diet Dr. Atkins recommends some??
Thanks guys, it really does help me to know others out there are going through this with me!!!

Morning all!

Thanks for the info on the ketostix Johnny. I didn't know the darkness of the sticks could be deceptive. But I am noticing other signs of ketosis, notably the breath and higher energy levels .

I do have to watch how much I'm eating. I binged on spinach salad with ground beef and sour cream last night. I ate a little past the point of fullness and immediately regretted it. Hopefully I didn't do too much damage.

I think I am going to start taking a multivitamin and/or fiber supplements. I am really missing the vitamin C from my huge daily glass of ruby red grapefruit juice (yes, I was a total sugar addict). I have this paranoia about getting scurvy LOL. I know that there is plenty of vitamin C to be had in other places, including veggies. Just used to the quick fix. I'm also trying to avoid the horrible constipation that has accompanied my other efforts with this diet, thus the fiber supplement.

Good morning everyone. Another beautiful day here in the Pacific Northwest!

I guess I will have to check out this food porn thread - several people have mentioned it. I suppose there are pictures and everything....I used to love to cook, but since my husband died last year I'm just not that into it anymore. It was hard enough cooking for two, cooking for one is nearly impossible for me. Maybe I'll get some inspiration there.

Now that I look again at my book, I do see the tomatoes on the list - don't know how I missed it when I specifically looked it up for Kila Lee. Duh! And I did see olives in the special category foods, but I tend to avoid anything that he says *might* slow down your weight loss. I love olives, but I can pass on them for a few weeks.

I use a little program from Calorie King that lets you add your food items for the day and it automatically calculates the calories, carbs, protein, fat, sodium etc. You can set your limit yourself, so you always know how many you have left. If you add in the number of minutes of a specific exercise you did, it deducts the appropriate number of calories from the total. It put your results into graphs and charts so you can watch your progress. I like that at the end of the day, you can see what your percentages of protein, carbs etc your meals were made up of. I didn't realize that I too, wasn't getting enough fat. It's been a big help to me. You just the first few letters of the food and it pulls it right from the huge database, and you just choose the portion you ate (or the way it was prepared etc). Easy cheesy!

Saved the best for last - I was down half a pound this morning AND showed a little pink on my stix! (Third level of 6) Anything's better than that darn neutral that's been my friend for so long! So I'm a happy camper again today and can't wait to do it right again!

EPIC. FAIL.

So...I had 6 Hershey's mini special dark chocolates today at 4:25. I have noticed that I get a craving almost exactly at 4:20 the last few days (how eerie is that?) and I've been able to fight it so far but today...not so much. There's a candy bucket about 5 feet from my desk and oh how I love dark chocolate. It's not helping that my time of the month is imminent.

Why 6, you say? Because once I accepted my failure, well...I accepted my failure and had a mini-binge. I figure that I have had about 40g of carbs today (including what was in my lunch). If I wasn't on induction that wouldn't be a catastrophe but ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRG!

I can't believe I'm so weak. I've got to find something to counteract that late afternoon craving

don't worry! and don't let it set you back. 40g of carbs isn't that bad - and it could have been soooo much worse. don't beat yourself up about it but relax and just carry on with induction. at most it'll slow you down for a day or two but in the long run that's nothing. have a think about what you could do tomorrow to prevent the 4:20 craving (i seem to remember that has some drug meaning! but that's not the way i mean it here!). have something high in protein 15 minutes earlier - protein helps with cravings.

UPDATE:

Cheating is bad. DON'T CHEAT! 30 minutes later = horrible upset stomach. Feeling dizzy and think I'm getting a slight headache.

Thanks for the encouragement Shasta. I was reading about what I can do to counteract the cheat and so far drinking tons of water and doing some intense exercise tonight to use up the glycogen reserves from the chocolate is what is recommended to try and keep me in ketosis and prevent a stall.

I don't think I'm going to weigh in tomorrow morning. Maybe the day after.

Well Starr, you know what they say - excrement occurs! Just pick yourself up and dust yourself off - it's not the end of the world. I usually have a hard boiled egg mid afternoon and that holds me over until dinner. Maybe try that or a cube of cheese, a couple slices of pepperoni? But first order of business - MOVE THAT CANDY JAR.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks Johnny for the info! Maybe I'm mistaken. I thought we are supposed to eat a lot of protein. As far as eating the skin on chicken, it's not going to happen, don't like it. I was reading a little about Atkins 72 last night and iti looks like I may be following what's closer to that. From my understanding, you hardly eat carbs. I've pretty much eaten the same today and added a few dill pickles. Had chicken and steak for breakfast. I'm down 2 pounds and I know it's water but I'll take it.

Felt a little tired today along with an upset stomach. Don't want to get into that but I think you know what I mean. (Sorry if TMI) Are you suppose to get that? I'm going to try and add more fats into my diet. I did fry my steak in some olive oil and do use coconut oil as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there, well...neither. I am sticking to the Atkins foods except for breakfast, which I have a bowl of cereal. I know, I know, it sounds like a cheat. Trust me, I hate to do it. I can so easily follow the induction diet to a T for about 6 days, and see great results, but thats when my Binge Eating Disorder inevitably conquers and destroys. On the 6th or 7th day, I snap and set off on a 3 day binge. I'm like Jekyll & Hyde. Its ugly. So, finally, through trial and error, and error, and error, I've realized that I have to include more carbs in my diet each day to control my BED. It has worked for me in the past, I've gone months with great success, but I always fall off the wagon because I try to cut out those extra carbs for quicker results. So to answer your question: How do I count them? I try not to. I know that the lbs would be falling off if I could skip carbs altogether, so I get really worked up when I start thinking about the numbers. I just have my one bowl of carb-infested cereal and try not to feel guilty about it, and then stick strictly to Atkins for the rest of the day. I feel in control of BED, and I'm seeing results!!

Oh, the joys of sugar alcohols... The dizziness and headache could be caused by dehydration.

Also, at the end of the 14 days, your results will probably be skewed so you won't be able to use the charts in the book to correctly find your degree of metabolic resistance. But just keep going and whatever damage you've done can be undone (plus some more!) by day 15.

Diarrhea could be caused by your body not being adjusted yet to the amount of fat you are eating or to the amount of fiber, or maybe by a Candida die off. I'd bet on the fat. Take a fiber supplement (psyllium or flax, for e.g.) to absorb some of the excess water and bulk up the stool.

I would say take a multivitamin only and see your doctor and let him say whether you need to take something else. Too much of a thing like iron or potassium or whatever can be just as bad as too little.

During my Induction, I was only taking a multivitamin with iron. See, Dr. Atkins said we should take one without iron, but my doctor recommended otherwise after doing my blood work. So the best thing to do is see your doctor and let him tell you what's best for you to take.

Just finished day three and i dreamed of cupcakes & cake frosting last night.I was very happy to see later tonight i was craving a hamburger.I've been a very hard time eating fatter cuts of meat. Kila Lee Ketosis on only day 1 im jealous! I go into ketosis the end of the second day and usually go deep into it the 5-10 day.I was having a bit of induction flu for the last couple of days just generally tired and muscle aches. This is the 4th time I've done induction and this is the WORST my flu has been but again I've been lacking fatty meat after eating this hamburger i feel great though!

My menu for today:

B-Cottage Cheese w/Flaxseed
L-Coffee
D-LOTS of chicken
S-Pork Rinds
S-Bk stacker minus bun (yum)

As far as what foods are allowed in the gray areas (veggies, cheeses) i know pretty well what i tolerate well on induction.I do allow myself a little greek yogurt because i feel its more like sour cream than yogurt. If this is your first time doing Induction i would def stick to exactly what the book says until you know how your body handles certain foods.I actually use Mayo a lot and extra mayo because its a good source of fat.Hopefully i will be able to eat fattier meat from this point on w/o feeling sick or im going to have to run out and get coconut oil.As far as exercise i do 6x a week alternating cardio and weights.

I have horrible constipation on atkins.I have a horrible digestive tract in general and i take three types of ezymes daily and eat extra fiber.Laxative don't work just give me a tummy ache.I just have to wait until my body feels like haha.

Hope everyones day goes well!

shasta-cat & clemmmaur- glad you're feeling fluish! Don't know why I haven't got it yet. I ALWAYS do, but I guess I am not complaining!

johnny - thanks for all the tips!!! Love it. I have done Atkins off and on for 10 years and you are inspiring me!

Bethany- glad you are joining us.

Starr- don't get too discouraged. I usually always cheat because of chocolate and totally fall off the wagon. I haven't yet this time and I love the support here. It has helped. Today, my students came in giving me cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies (and brownies) and I resisted them all. Yesterday we had a bunch of desserts for teacher appreciation... tough, but I resisted. Usually I CAVE. Don't give up Starr, and don't give in! RESIST!

An awesome verse from the bible (not to be preachy) is "I beat my body and make it my slave. I discipline my body and bring it under subjection to Christ." I personally love the part about beating our bodies and making it our slave! Discipline. Discipline. It's tough and that's why it is called discipline.

Armystolehim - thanks for the tips about how long it takes to get into deep purple for you. I never quite seem to get there (usually cheat).

Katkins - I live in the Pac.NW, too, and it was a beautiful day today!

Today I had...

chicken salad
coffee w/creamer
water
chicken salad

a few bites of a 2g carb bar (I know it's kinda cheating, but it doesn't really seem to stall me and I get a sweet fix...)

that's all today.
no exercise. too many papers to correct. aaaah.

Have a great DAY 4 tomorrow, gang!!!

morning everyone! day 4 is here (well, day 3 for me but things'll just get confusing, so i'm hijacking a day from you all and will give it back later!).

Induction flu is still there. I was hoping for a bit of a whoosh on the old scales this morning, but was only down a 1lb and i think that's more to do with the fact that I weighed myself after going to the bathroom today, but before yesterday . ah well, will keep looking out for the fairy

kila - are you feeling fluey yet? i've done atkins quite a few times and each time the flu has been less. i remember the first time i couldn't even get out of bed!

clemmaur - you still fluey? i'm trying to drink water loads as I think that helps a bit.

starr - remember to eat something before 4pm!

bethany , congrats with 4lbs loss already!

I too began re-inducting on June 1st. It is amazing how much I had gotten off track and now on induction am being more disciplined and aware of. I am measuring ALL of my food and entering it on fit day. Working hard at keeping my calories under 2000 calories. I am also exercising....so far I am 4 lbs down!

not feeling fluey yet. Energy a bit low. I did start induction about 6 weeks ago and was completely fluey for a day. Stayed in bed half the day i was so sick. Maybe that's why i am not feeling it this time. ???

not losing yet. well, 1 lb... don't think that counts for much for all i am cutting out. but i am sure it will come. just gotta stay focused. sooooo helps to be on this thread.

can't wait to go shopping later if i have the energy. read a bunch on the food porn thread and got inspired to buy/try some new things. some variety may help my energy.

have a great day.

Hi Terra! Wow 4 pounds in 3 days is nothing to sneeze at, eh? Good job! Yes, I agree, tracking your food is the key - it's amazing how much I can consume unconsciously. Being aware is what works - every time.

Kila, one of these days you're gonna have a whoosh and we won't be able to stand the excitement! We're pulling for ya!

I was down another .6 today so I'm happy, too. And best of all, I'm feeling great, no flu symptoms in the least. Hope it lasts!

ok, here's a challenge for you. I need to eat about another 200 calories today or else I'm too low. according to fitday i've overdone it on the protein, my ratios are 50:40:10. What on earth can i eat, that has no carbs in it, no protein and just fat????? aside from spoonfuls of olive oil or something else as gross!!

lol Shasta-cat! Maybe nibble some butter? (I am sooooo just kidding, although I have met people who ate butter before as a snack!!)

Thanks for asking, I am feeling much better today. More energy. Unfortunately I had to skip breakfast, which I hate to do! Had no time! Just had some scrambled eggs and a little ham for lunch. When I weighed myself this morning, it was a 6lb loss since Monday!!!! Now, I thought my weight on Mon seemed a little high--I think TOM was making me retain more water than usual, so that is why I have this unusually high loss. But, hey, I'll still take it!!

Hey there...I hope I'm not too late to join the cause. I have been on induction for 9 days. I lost 6 lb the first week and then have gained two pounds back. I think it is fluid retention since I had a love affair with pickles last night while watching t.v. Need some moral support. This is not the easiest diet I have ever been on. (like any diet is fun/!?) But I am determined to make this work. I would like to lose 30 lbs. Still have that "baby" weight from the 7 and a half year old! Ha Ha Ha.

Mama, it's never too late - come on it! You can inspire up with your 6 pound loss! Clem had one too. Guess I'm gonna have to work a little harder to catch up with you!

Shasta, I don't know what to tell you about the fat. I looked it up, but the only thing that's 100% fat are oils, so if you can gag that down, there's your solution. Personally, I'd have to be just 200 calories shy today!

WOE: Good carbs and exercise
Hi Everyone,

Feeling much better today. Am down 4 pounds since Tuesday. I added more veggies in today so see what the scale says tomorrow. This is what I ate today.

B- Eggs with a little spinach and steak
L- Chicken with a small salad with romaine lettuce and Newmans Italian oil and vinegar dressing
D- turkey with a few sauteed mushrooms

Wow I guess I did have way more carbs today. Maybe I'll cut back a little tomorrow.

Have a wonderful evening!

WOE: Atkins
Start Date: June 1st, 2009
Hi Everyone! I've been lurking in here all week and thought I should say hi started to feel like I was eaves dropping. Lol. I first did Atkins about 4 years ago and it was awesome I lost 50 lbs in about 6 months was where I wanted to be and still losing then got pregnant with my 4th child. I gained it back then after the baby was born I lost a little then tried atkins again for a month and lost 15 or so lbs then fell off the wagon. But somehow kept the weight off. It's wierd I don't seem to have a problem really gaining weight but I can't lose it either unless I diet. I'm a big junk food, fast food lover. So I don't know how I've managed not to blow up. Anyhow last Monday I weighed in and decided to start induction again. I don't have the book but just mainly keeping carbs down to a minimum (under 20) as of yesterday I've lost 7lbs. Okay so i may have cheated there... I first weighed myself Monday evening and now i'm weighing in the mornings. I know you tend to weigh a little more in the evenings but oh well I'm taking it. Makes me feel better anyways. :-)
So there ya have it. Just wanted to jump in and say Hello and let you know that I'm with you all. I'm on day 5 of induction.
