Any reason to rein in heavy ketosis during Induction?

Halfway through my "by the book" Induction, my Ketostix are consistently showing at about 80, or "heavy" ketosis (but not the 160 "very heavy" reading.)

I'm eating allowed foods to full and measuring and consuming my max allotment of greens and veggies, so I don't have a lot of latitude to slow it down without adding non-induction quantities of carbs, and I really don't want to.

Is there any reason I can't go on in heavy ketosis? I ask because I vaguely recollect reading that moderate was best and slight was perfectly acceptable.

Ketosis is ketosis. Don't worry about levels. It doesn't matter if you are light pink or darkest purple. Don't let those pee sticks rule you.

you are using two very different definitions for the word ketosis. Dr Atkins defines it as burning fat for fuel period.
your stix define it by concentration of just one type of ketone body being expelled in your urine.
they are not the same. any use of either body fats or dietary fats gets you to Atkins ketosis regardless of what the concnetration of excess amounts of one body type of ketone at the time that urine was produced.

2big,

Well, your reply certainly motivated me to do my homework!

No, actually I am talking only of ketosis as described by Atkins, and using the Ketostix as he recommends for "determining, some quantitatively, the presence of ketone bodies in the urine, thus heralding fat breakdown. They are available under the names of Lipostix, designed for low-carbohydrate dieters, or Ketostix, designed to warn of ketoacidosis in diabetics. However, both are quite serviceable as lipolysis testing strips." (emphasis mine, DANDR, 1999 Wholecare Health reprint.)

So, while I see your point, that Ketostix measure acetoacetic acid and that it's possible to excrete ketone body by-products other than that, my question was whether one ought to stay in mild to moderate ketosis during induction. And, as Shari pointed out, nope, it doesn't matter.

I should have re-read my DANDR before I posted.

That would frustrate the heck out of me. Right now I'm immune, as I have no scale. I'm a pound-watching FOOL when I have a scale. And I think I'm getting a Wii Fit for Mother's Day, and I think it has ... a scale.

Congrats on the over-100 pounds lost though...I see that and I know that you'll stay the course.

I don't rely on the stix as far as the "level" goes -- Being higher than trace or small usually just means you're not drinking enough water. Mine are always the darkest in the morning after I've been sleeping all night. If I test during the day, they're never more than trace. I drink fluids like a crazy woman while I'm awake. In fact, my incessant thirst is how I know I'm in ketosis. The stix are just for kix

fireflyfaster...thanks for that. the scale has finally budged the 6 lbs back off and 3 pair of jeans were voted into the out box yesterday. My DD is my fashion advisor and does not allow "funny" looking clothes on mom. Best of luck to everyone.

Good lord, your three year old makes fashion observations? I've got far less time than I thought. My daughter is also three.

And this emoticon is just because she's watching me type this and insists I have to include it:
