Should I count Net carbs or total carbs?

Which leads to faster weight loss? Counting net carbs or total carbs? I'm new to Atkins, so any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

"faster" is different for everybody. If you count total carbs, on induction you may not be getting enough fiber, probably. If your bowels...um..."slow," you may not lose weight as "fast" (FLUSH!) as someone getting more fiber... lol.

I go by net carbs and I've lost pretty well. Some people go by total carbs and lose pretty well.

Don't believe the "net effective carbs" listed on Atkins bars. They may have 25 carbs in them and say "only 3 effective carbs." yeah...right.

(I try and believe them when I need to eat a bar, but it takes some effort)

I go by net carbs and lose an average of 4 lbs a week. I try to stay under 20 a day. The days I go over, I stall. The days I stay way under, I usually lose 1 lb.

HTH

I do it the original way (72) and Atkins hadn't even brought up the idea of net carbs LOL He did say that fiber didn't count toward your carb count (IF it was a supplement). Some day down the road, I might eat the bars or shakes, but for now I have to eat clean to keep the cravings down. Welcome!

I found that the first time I did inducton I lost faster counting the full amount of carbs using fitday, whatever it said is what i went by. I'm on reinduction now and doing it the same way.

I actually count ALL, BUT, I won't take in empty carbs. I look at it, and say, "I don't think so..." to many foods.

I'm using FitDay too (I've used it off and on for more than 5 years now - LOVE it!) and it sounds like the consensus here is to go with the Total carb count. Thanks everybody!

Just look at WHAT you are eating. The food value, vs the carb count.

I do net carbs total minus fiber but not net effective carbs total minus those mythical magical noncounting counting carbs.

PDXrockmommy FYI Please don't be too impressed when a begining superheavy weight says 4 pounds a week cause that 4 pounds is a small % of the actual total pounds we need to lose. It would be equal to less then a pound a week for somebody needing to lose 20 pounds.
