I'm new..and sorry.. need to ask a question.

So, here's how it goes. This is my second time trying to change my way of eating into the Akins way. I did it about two years ago and lost about twenty pounds but I only let it last for about two months..my 21st birthday derailed me completely.

I am on day eleven of induction and am doing swell, down ten pounds so far. I was just wondering..I will be past my two weeks very soon and I'd like to have a few drinks with my family on the fourth of July. If I chose something with no carbs and diet rite to drink; do you think that it would phase my weight loss for a period of time if that was the only night that I drank?

I was just wondering and sorry if it seems to be a silly question. I just don't want to quit losing or feel like I cheated or broke my new way of living. Thanks for any replies.

what happens is your body stops burning the fat and switches to burn off the alcohol.
As long as you don't get tipsy and say "screw it I am eating a bagel" I think you will only lose a day of weight loss. I drank 3-4 light beers one night soon after my induction and I was okay. I knocked myself out of ketosis but I went back in by the next night.

Be the designated driver and then you can't drink alcohol and your problem is solved.

It's not silly, dear. But it is a cheat and it is a choice. Just be prepared to own up to the consequences, and enjoy the weekend!

bourbon; scotch; vodka; gin; rum; tequila - contain no carbs, only empty calories.

and yes, you are kicked out of ketosis.

it's the mixers that contain the carbs. so choose wisely.

you can choose a low carb beer or red wine is naturally low carbs.

but as flour child notes, it is a cheat and it is a choice. beware of cravings.

(i "cheat" w/ red wine every friday night)

Thank you all for helping me out here. I appreciate it a lot. Hummingbird11, does crown royal have any carbs, I looked it up and it says no.. but whiskey is not on your list. I was just going to take a few shots.. and chase it down with Diet Rite's White Grape Soda...it says to have no carbs either. I plan on going straight back to induction for another two weeks after the fourth...so I hope this isn't the worst cheat ...

by the fourth you would have finished 14 days. I thought the book says you could have a drink as long as you count the carbs. I had 2 light beers saturday. I was still in ketosis after. Which was surprising. I have been on induction for 2 months now. Sometimes you need a drink.

I accidentally drank 2 beers on induction ... I literally forgot about my WOE! but it just slowed me down.

I have had a few other occasions where I have had hard liquors (rum and diet being a particular favourite) and I still lost weight. it may slow you down for like a day but it'll be okay. the great thing about that is that they make so many sugar free mixers now!

no sassy drinks with fruit juice though...!

Althought the labels on drinks such as vodka, scotch, bourbon, etc., might say "no carbs," the truth is that the components of a carbohydrate that were broken down to create the alcohol must still be processed by the body before you return to fat-burning mode. The fortunate thing is that it's a relatively quick deal - about half an hour or so for an ounce.

When you add that ounce to something - let's say rum added to Diet Coke - you have your drink. The danger for many people is that alcohol added to a diet soda instead of fruit juice or a regular soft drink, will hit your bloodstream at a MUCH faster rate, and people tend to get tipsy/drunk faster than they expected.

You can slow that absorption by keeping higher fat, low carb snacks around for the night - don't drink on an empty stomach!

For myself, I can't have a drink when I am LC'ing. I have NO self-control and a drink doesn't lead to another drink - it leads to the Oreos. *sigh*

I had two rum and diet cokes yesterday (I am on day 18 of induction. I am doing it for an extra few weeks) and still got a good reading on my ketostix this morning. Will I get "kicked out of ketosis" for sure?

you are experiencing the false positive results of the alcohol by products in your urine reacting with the reagents on your stix.

Alcohol does not kick you out of ketosis it simply delays it while the alcohol is reacted for energy. UNless in your inhibriated state you chowed down on carbs too as many folk post about I was just going to have a drink and then those nuts, chips, nachoes, pizza, etc., just jumped in my mount folk post about as soon as the alcohol is reacted you should be back to where you were before you drank the alcohol.

I didn't know that you would still test positve for ketosis just because of the alcohol. I actually don't get drunk (so I wouldn't chow down on carbs) I just have a few to relax. Thanks for the info. I am not in too big of a hurry to lose the weight, so once and awhile I think I will have a few rum and diet cokes. It should only slow down my weight lose a little. I didn't notice any weight gain because of it.
