does exercise help or hinder weight loss during induction?
this may be a dumb question and i'm sorry if this horse has already been beaten to death or something. i'm new to low carbing AND this forum.
i am at the end of week one of induction and have been THRILLED with the weight coming off. i'm wondering if i should be exercising at all - or will any potential muscle gain slow the appearance of weight loss on the scale (and i NEED to see those numbers going down). in the past - on low calorie programmes - i have NOT lost any weight and told myself that it is because muscle weighs more than fat and i may be fitter even if i'm not thinner. fast forward to today: quite frankly, i don't really feel that i have the energy to exercise most of the time. but if i did feel like it, would it help the numbers on the scale go down? maybe just some cardio rather than weights? i have no problem staying under 20g of carbs and i guess i'm in ketosis, but i dont really know for sure... thanks for any help :-) Genelle. |

keep working out doing your induction and make friends with your tape measure cause that muscle you are adding and fluids are smaller molecules then the fat you are burning off and when your body reaches your tolerance level for that fluid you have added cause of that new to you exercise you will shed it and poof your sclaes will move
Happy low carbing |

Hi and welcome, genjo73!
![]() ![]() About exercise -- -- I really think it varies from person to person. And I think you know best what's good for you.Personally, I enjoy short brisk walks (5-15 minutes, once or twice a day), or brief periods on my stair stepper. (It's like climbing stairs, so if I can do 2 minutes straight, I'm pleased. After all, it means I'm lifting my whole body weight with each leg over and over.) I like enough exercise to get my heart rate up. If you feel draggy, I believe you should respect your body's need to not exercise, or only exercise a little. The first 3-7 days can be rough. (By the way, I only feel draggy when I consume MSG -- and MSG causes bloating, weight gain, and hunger/cravings.) Whatever you decide about exercise during induction, keep eating right! You should feel much better by the end of Induction. (I felt like I had the flu the first 3 days of induction, then woke up day 4 feeling amazing!) Best wishes to you! ![]()

Of course exercise will help, it'll burn calories, help with flexibility, and overall mental health. If you don't feel like it, just start with a short walk, then build on that every day.
Also, I don't have the exact formula for "proof", but I don't think you can really build SO MUCH muscle as to see a gain on the scale. Now, you might retain a little water when you first start lifting weights, or after a particularly tough workout. It actually helps to speed up your metabolism, to help you burn more calories all the time, even when you're not exercising. I say get moving if you can! It'll help you feel like you're doing something to improve your health! Getting in shape takes 2 things: eating healthy AND exercise. You can do it!!

thank you so much for your responses. i absolutely don't have enough energy to exercise, but now that i see that the rest of you do, it obviously means that i'm doing something wrong. i'm still making my way through the book and i'm realising now that the absence of a multivitamin may be my problem right now.
so, i started one this weekend. as i understand, it takes a couple of weeks for the vitamin to kick in... thanks for the clarification. |

sometimes we have no energy cause we need to exercise. try taking a walk after breakfasat or lunch or dinner just a nice stroll no race walking yet. You will be surprised how fast your ability to exercise improves. day one I was struggling to do 10 min at 2MPH and when I finally got to 20 min I felt like Rocky on top of those steps in the movie. then I was up to 3MPH then 4 and by 6 months I was up to 5MPH for 60 min with the incline climbing weekly. now if the treadmill is set lower then 3 MPH I walk right off the front of it. Give it a try
