New member- questions re: migraines, weird body smell

Hi, all! I'm on Day 6 of induction! I am feeling great, my blood sugar seems to really be stabilizing, I'm not hungry inbetween meals, and not really missing junk-carbs (except when I'm tired or emotional, I'm a big emotional eater!)

My two questions: Does anyone here get migraines? If so, did you find that going on Atkins helped with them? I'm finding that, and wondering if I'm the only one whose migraines seem to be fewer while on Atkins.

Secondly, I don't know if this is TMI, but since being on Atkins, I think my body chemistry is doing weird things. My sweat (underarms) smells NASTY, and almost chemical, and is really pungent, almost to the point where I want to change shirts halfway through the day. (This isn't normal for me). Any ideas on what could be causing this? Maybe I'm not drinking enough water? But I definitely don't want to be smelling all nasty...Sigh. It's not to the point where I'm like Pigpen, with those wavy smell lines coming off my body, but *I* can smell it, and it's gross to me.

Thanks! And I look forward to being a frequent poster to these boards!

I have suffered from migraines since I was a teenager and Atkins has not changed this for me. Your migraines might be related to the foods you were eating prior to Atkins. Have you had allergy testing done? You can find out a wealth of info from them and food allergies are included in this just not airborne or plant allergies. The smell problems you're undergoing is probably due to ketosis. You can search here or Google if for a lot of good info.

Yes, you'll totally smell. Underarms, pee. etc. I switched deodorant from one I was faithfully using and worked well to a higher power one and all is well (I went from secret gel to degree, the one that 'works with your body'.)

I chew gum, on any diet where I'm losing weight my breath is raunchy. Although I find on my current plan, everyone elses' breath REEKS as well. It all smells like garlic, even if I pass them 5 feet away outside.

But mine's worse

My wife used to get migraines, about once a month. Snce starting Atkins she hasn't had them at all so we are very happy about that.

Drinking more water may indeed help with the smell. Gotta get those ketones flushed out.

When your body is using fat as its source of energy the by-products of the fat leave your body via your pee and other bodily fluids. So in a funny way it’s a great thing that you smell. Thankfully it won’t usually last forever and you are getting healthier by the minute. Just drink a lot of water – that usually helps me – plus I know the more water I drink the more my I am flushing the fat out of my body.

Yes! Congradulations! I would definately say you are in ketosis. I noticed my breath smells bad too now.... That's the only place that I have noticed... but isn't that enough. I never had headaches before but now I sure do. I think it's due to not having that sugar in my body. I am trying to get over these head aches... They are awful!

smells good

Hi everyone,

I'm SunnySA, new to this thread, just adding my 2cents worth. Thanks for the info about the BO. I'm not on Atkins but decided to try induction so I reduced my carb intake, because I'd stalled and possibly gained 1lb. Next thing I notice the smell. OMG, couldn't believe it was me. Also, I didn't increase my water intake and my urine was so much darker. So, all the advice is right, drink more water to pass the ketones and feel encouraged that you smell bad.

I actually historically have had fewer migraines when NOT doing Atkins. But that is because I tend to OD on bacon, sausage, hot dogs, and other processed meats. Nitrates and nitrites in processed meat are a notorious migraine trigger. I also can't eat soy products other than whole beans in much quantity because the phytoestrogens in soy are a trigger for me. Thusly, frankenfoods give me migraines, too. I haven't heard this complaint from many other people, however.

As for the stink, drink more water and see if that helps. And get used to chewing gum.
