protein will be used for fuel only after fat is no longer available. The body does not like to catabolize itself.

There is something called ketoacidosis - it is what happens to diabetics when they don't have enough insulin in their system to bond with the sugar they have eaten. In that case, the body DOES start to burn muscle and fat. It is a very unhealthy condition.

KETOSIS is something very different. It occurs when there is no sugar for the body to consume and so it turns to fat stores for energy. Ketones are merely a biproduct of burning body fat for fuel.

Some people, even doctors, sometimes hear KETOSIS and associate it with KETOACIDOSIS. Don't worry though. I've been doing this way of eating for a decade now and I am much healthier. I also have no problem maintaining muscle tone!
