4 days on vacation.. How to eat of dollar menu ?

Alright, so Im going to Florida for a family trip. Since We will be driving for a day, Im going to be living off of fast food! I thought about going off of Atkins for those days and enjoy myself , but screw it! I know I can take bread off burgers and stuff. Im worried about the traveling. Im planning on cooking enough food and taking it with me to snack and eat off of. What do you think about that? Sound kinda cheesy? LOL does any one have any non processed foods I could take or any ideas?

When last we traveled, we packed: deviled eggs, dill pickles, jerky, colelsaw, mini cheesecakes, pork rinds, meatballs in red sauce.

All of them traveled really well and were pretty darned filling. You didn't even mind the lack of heating sources for the meats because they were terrific, even chilled. Make your splurges diet sodas and expensive, quality jerkies from butchers and stay away from the carbs. No one needs tummy troubles on the road. Have a safe trip!

If you are taking a small cooler (refill at hotel with some ice), you can also take cheese sticks, pepperonis, cold cuts, boiled eggs. I also allow myself to eat Atkins bars and shakes when on the road. No, they may not be the best choice, but they are definitely better than other choices I could be making.

I also take nuts and seeds with me.

I take cans of tuna and pork rinds. I also pack some bag o' salads with a container of dressing + Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Ham (no carbs) & baked chicken breast in the cooler. Don't want to make poor food choices on the road and regret the trip because of it. Takes preplanning and extra room (plastic bowl & fork, etc) but it's worth it in my opinion and I don't trust eating out - don't know what "they" put in their meats, salad dressings etc (paranoid much? Yeah I am!!! ).

Wishing you much success on your trip, Cadet!!!

It's not the dollar menu, but I order a half spicy chicken Caesar at Wendy's and ask them to sub grilled chicken. It's about the right amount of lettuce, does have a few cherry tomatoes, and some shaved Parmesan. The croutons are separate so I just don't use them. Anyway that's a $4 option for ya!

Cadet, I take several road trips a year and never go off plan, so it honestly can EASILY be done. If I want to take food with me, I buy the hard boiled eggs that are already cooked and peeled, the Cracker Barrel extra sharp cheese slices that are individually prepackaged, pepperoni, things like that. For eating off the dollar menu, I usually will run through a McDonalds. Their McDoubles on the dollar menu are not bad. I tell them to leave off the bun, ketchup, mustard, and onions. Just the cheese, pickles and meat. They serve it in a little salad bowl and it's really easy to eat. For a sit down restaurant, I always pick some place that I can order a steak, or bacon and eggs (NEVER order your eggs scrambled in a restaurant). Or I also really like Chipotle. Just get meat, cheese and sour cream in a bowl. You can even get double meat if you want.

OH! Almost forgot, I also recently found at Wal-Mart, in the deli section, packages of Pepperoni, or Salami, that are wrapped around pieces of cheese. There's 8 of them in a package. I grabbed a few to have on hand for when we're out on the boat for the day or something like that, so a couple of packages of these could work for you too.

MG, you are soooo spot on about the scrambled eggs in restaurants, they are usually prepackaged in cartons with modified starches and what have you -- it's scary!

Jo, I know! I hate that! They've even told me before that they will be glad to crack fresh eggs for me and scramble them, but I still don't trust it. I would love to be able to order an omelette, but I just don't trust the eggs.

I would trust a mom and pop place over a chain restaurant

So if I wanted Mexican someday I could probably make it work, we have a fantastic Mexican place, those darn hot fresh chips would be the challenge.

If I ate eggs in a restaurant, I'd do over-easy, boiled or sunny side up at least you know they are "really" eggs. LOL

What could we eat in a Mexican restaurant that would be LC?? I'd be a little suspicious of the Taco salad -- what kind of fillers did they add to stretch the "meat"?? Best bet, make your own. As you know reptogirl, Imma little paranoid of other people making my food!

Well mg had mentioned chipotle, that's why I said that. I am bummed that my gluten free bouillon powder has sugar in it I always made my own gf onion soup mix when we did a crock pot roast, going to have to find some alternative to make a roast.

ReptoGirl, Chipotle is widely known for their quality and organic ingredients, so, for me, I definitely trust them more than a mom and pop place. I've worked at way too many small restaurants to just assume that they use quality ingredients. That's very often not the case. Whereas Chipotle has built their reputation on the quality of their ingredients.

I LOVE fajitas too! Just be really careful if you eat them in a restaurant. Most of the time they use a marinade that is full of sugar. Good way to ruin a great meal! LOL

One night I had 3 different carbmares, one was my sister had made me a low carb muffin and when I looked at the recipe it had sugar in it(I don't eat muffins I must of read too much on here about ppl and muffins) my other ones were silly too, I was licking a Reece cup, and other one was I bought a big beef stick that had 26 grams of carbs....strange things your head does when you change the way you eat!!!

Right now I only trust things that me or my mom makes. I know realistically and long term I need a go to place, my dad always takes us out for a birthday meal. Still have a few months to figure that one out .

I have a great burrito shop across the stree from my office. I watch them put the chicken and beef on the grill. I order just a side of meat for $2.00 and get around 4 ounces of just meat. It makes a perfect lunch on top of some shredded lettuce.

I agree that mom and pop places are much easier to get clean food.

I had no idea that they used eggs that had things added to them.
I have been eating scramble eggs every time we are out of town!
The last time I thought the eggs tasted like they had something in them!
I knew about omelets but not the scrambled eggs.
How sad.
Fried eggs for me from now on!
Yet an other reason why I like to cook my own food!
Thanks you, MtherGoos for this information.

Repto - Carbmares! LOL! I haven't had any, yet. I'm sure they will come.

Waffle House is a great place to get an LC meal. You can see them crack the eggs. Of course, you need to stay away from the waffles and the covered and smothered potatoes. We don't go there often, but our kids will vote for a stop when we are traveling.
