Thanks to everyone who has posted here for all the good information. I spent a better part of the weekend reading threads and started following the guidelines for this version of the Adkins Diet. High hopes and no appetite today although not noticing any weight loss yet. Hoping that will come soon and looking forward to any and all tips, hints and encouragement that I can get here.....

Thanks Emily!!! I am sticking to it, this one is so much easier than the newer Atkins because I just don't seem hungry at all. I am confused though as to where my daily calorie count should be. Found the book online and waiting for it to arrive but sure don't want to mess up in the meantime.

I've never counted calories on Atkins....I just try to only eat when I'm hungry. He says that in the 72 book as well.

Although I am not having the results that I would like to have, I am having some results so I shouldn't be disappointed~~some is certainly better than none!! I'm driving myself crazy though trying to figure out what I may be doing wrong or what I could do better.....hopefully the book will come soon and I can get a more educated plan going here. Thanks again for your response!!!

I am not good at this, but can be a good idea to write down what you eat, but not worry too much at first about tweaking. You may at some point want to return to your records. Induction level is a good place to start. Place priority on counting carbs. Be sure to drink you water. Plan a day a ahead at least. Keep it simple.

Before I was diabetic, I did not have to count calories. However, the diabetes and insulin resistance changed things up and then I had to worry about them.

Atkins '72 says to 'eat when you're hungry'. So, if you're hungry...eat. He also says that if you aren't losing...and even gaining...take a serious look at your fats.

Give it some time though. Some of us lose pretty quickly when we get the carbs out of our system. Some don't. Don't compare yourself to any others. Pay more attention to the changes in your body than the scale. I could go 3-4 weeks without seeing any change in the scale, but I saw the difference in how my clothes fit, how I moved and how I felt. Then all of a sudden the scale would take a dive of 10-15 pounds over a week or two.

Something to keep in mind if you are diabetic though is that excess protein can cause a ketogenic effect and react like carbs. I'm not sure if this works the same for folks without a compromised system.

Thank so much Bella, I have been recording every morsel I eat at a site that I saw mentioned on here which calculates my nutrition for the day..calories seem to range between 1200 and 1600.maybe not enough??? keeping the carbs under 5 for the day but still cannot get the Ketosis started...at least enough to show on the test strips....driving me crazy!!! I have lost about 2.4 in the week I have been doing this but had hoped for a higher number than that....wracking my brain and spending every available minute reading old posts on here for ideas....:( I would sure appreciate any and all advice!!!

And thank you too Aomiel!!! Does he say to up the fats or lower the fats? I will be sooooo glad when my book gets here!!!! It's of course hard to loose the old diet mentality of needing to stay low fat but I have sure been enjoying the Hellmanns Olive Oil Mayo and the bacon although I haven't been able to find a Nitrate free brand....does the presence of Nitrates affect ketosis? So many questions :stars:

Color on the teststrip!!!
I was so excited to actually see some color on the old teststrip last night.....I think it was in the moderate range.....of course this morning it was only a light pink but at least not beige :jumpjoy:

Starting to see some results!!!
:jumpjoy: Finally seeing some definite movement on the scales....FINALLY!!! Not one of the wished for 'whooshes' that I read about on here but, heck, I'll take what I can get :D Thanks to those who have responded :shake:
Still craving any and all suggestions and advice :newbie:

Thanks Kristina!!! I finally found out what Ketosis feels like today:sick: .....the thought of food just about made me sick! Had breakfast at 8:30 and had to force myself to eat lunch at 2:00....loved what I saw on the scale this morning and can't wait for tomorrow's results :up: So glad I finally found this site and can stop struggling!! And THANKS to all here for the support!!!

Congratulations!! Oh and I'd toss the ketostix. I drink 64 fl oz of water a day and my sticks never turned purple...unless I forgot to drink. According to my nephrologist, low carb is harder on the kidneys (but not harmful for healthy kidneys) and we do them a favor by giving them enough water to help flush the toxins. She said if my stix turned purple, drink more water.

I just record everything I eat in an online food log because there are hidden carbs in things like eggs, half and half, some cheeses, etc. that can push you over what you think you're eating. Then I keep my carbs below 25gm per day.

Arb, my only advice would be to settle in and be patient. It can take some bodies quite a while to adjust. There is such huge variabilty amongst us. I am still seeking advice and learning. Some days I want better results, but no way I am going back. Stay the course.

Thank you both!!! I also log all of my food into an online log and try to keep the carbs as low as possible for right now....usually no more than 5 or 6 per day. That's why it surprises me that the color isn't the more dark purple that others on here mention. Of course the ultimate determiner of how well I am doing is the scale although that can be mercurial in not always responding as you would think it should. Thanks for the mention of the kidneys, I have been noticing a bit of backache in the kidney region so today I will consciously up the water and see if that helps any. The biggest problem right now though is the inability to fall asleep at night, hoping that changes!!!
