Weird side effects of too many carbs - anyone else?

This happened to me the last time I was on Atkins too, but I thought I'd see if anyone else has experienced this.

Saturday I ate at a Mexican restaurant and way overdid the carbs (I know, I know). Anyway, we went to the theater afterwards and I could. not. sit. still. I felt like something was crawling on the bottoms of my feet and my legs were extremely restless. Also, I have a repetitive motion injury to my left elbow that I've kept in check for years with glucosamine (and low carb apparently, which I just rediscovered) and my elbow ached as well. This went on for a few hours until, I'm guessing, I had finally metabolized the carbs.

Anyone else ever experienced this? I knew it was the carbs right away - as I said, it happened the last time I was on Atkins - but I have never heard anyone else have a similar experience.

That's the last damn time I do that! I wonder now how many people have joint pain and restless legs and it's because of carbs.

Yes, my joint pain really flares up too and then the next morning I feel like a truck ran over me.

Now in maintenance whenever I intentionally eat a higher carb meal (usually in the form of sushi roll ) I try to plan it around a heavy lifting day.

Clearly, like me you can not tolerate higher carbs.

Yeah, it's the weirdest thing ever. And not pleasant, either. Definitely won't be doing that again!

With what kind of carbs did you splurge? There is a whole theory out there that dietary imbalances (exacerbated by white sugars and white flour esp.) will trigger inflammation. (thus your arthritis or bursitis flare) Google "Perricone Diet" and see what comes up. It certainly gave me pause.

Thanks, I'll take a look at it.

My main carbs came from those stupid tortilla chips they give you as an appetizer (if only that salsa wasn't so gooooooodd).

Curse you, tortilla chips! i really love those too. I remembered that a lot of my joint pain was also related to my Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Once that was treated the pain vanished but I still have the worst fatigue if I go over my carb limit. It really is hard b/c my maintenance level of carbs is much higher but I can not tolerate the way they make me feel.

Ces la vie.

Those are my downfall too (if you go look at the Confess and Move On thread) I bought some of the salsa from my fave Mexican restaraunt and decided to use pork skins to dip in them. Really handles my chip and salsa craving with minimal carb intake. Keeps me on track. The salsa is about 3 or 4 carbs per 1/4 cup I think

Yes! That happens to me when I have too much sugar in my body. I also get hot flashes, my fingers go numb and I have to "go" to the bathroom a lot. WEIRD!!!

I am having a different experience. When I low-carb, sometimes I can GET restless legs. I know exactly what you're experiencing, I have had that happen a few times in the past. It happened the other night during the night...I had drank some diet Pepsi (caffeine) and HAD been drinking a lot of diet root beer (non-caffeinated but has aspartame)forgot to take my Requip (for Periodic Limb Movement). One of those things, or a combination of all 3 resulted in my not being able to sleep as my legs were moving alllll over the place I finally fell asleep at 4:30 am I will never again have caffeine or diet soda. I never want to experience that again. I have had the restless leg thing during a movie. It's very annoying I just have never noticed it being brought on by carbs.
