did you count/track calories on Atkins 72

I've been reading atkins 72 and I am little confused about calories. The idea seems to be don't worry about calories but Dr A. says we will definitely lose more weight on say 1500 cals vs. 2000 . I thought the beauty of atkins was don't consume yourself with calorie counts but now I am thinking I should be keeping track. Thanks Jeanie

You ask a very good question! I recall him saying, "You don't count calories, but calories do count." So while it IS possible to overconsume, if one follows the guidelines and eats until satisfaction (not until stuffed), s/he shouldn't need to count calories.

The exception occurs when one is in a very long term stall, and then he says to take a look at possible stallers, like cream and cheese, that may need to be reduced in quantity.

Also, in ketosis, the body burns more calories in order to metabolize mostly fat and protein, so it is possible (at least in my case) to eat up to 2100 calories a day and still be on plan.

If we try to count calories too low, we may consume too little fat, which is high in calories, but very satiating. Atkins encourages the consumption of real, healthy fats.

Best wishes to you !

By the way...you and I have similar stats. I am 5"2" too and fairly close to goal. Perimeno/hypothyroid issues add a real challenge for me .

I hear that if we are within 20 lbs of goal, the loss can be excruciatingly slow so discouragement creeps in for me from time to time.

I feel better, but haven't lost much. Schwarzbein Principle is helping me with my adrenal/cortisol concerns. She says it can take a long while, too.

Pressing on toward the (perhaps distant) goal!

Thanks Becky. I can't believe I have been l/c since June and am just now getting it in my head to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with a high fat percentage at all meals. I used to skip breakfast most of the time and eat a smallish lunch and then wonder why I overate or binged a lot of the time in the evenings. I think I am finally getting it.
I started atkins 72 yesterday and am already showing a trace of ketones.
Changes? I ate when I was hungry yesterday and ate a lot of fat.
It is hard being only 5'2 isn't it , the pounds have no where to hide!
I too have hypothyroid (hasimotos in my family), but so far I have not had any symptoms.
Best wishes to you and KUTGW. Jeanie
