Hi, I dropped in because another member referred me to Atkins '72 rather than the new FANY. I am familiar with the original because I did it! I got the new book and have been posting feaverishly on the Atkins site while getting started again. I think the new version stinks I am sorry to say. They have me eating until stuffed and then more calories because I'm not losing and then more veggies because I need 12-15 carbs of them. I do much better with the '72 version. The first four rules are mandatory and make such sense! I am 70, 5'2" and not super active, although I do Pilates and walk. I have to lose 30 lbs and that is non-negotiable. That said I went back to the tried and true and am praying this succeeds. I'll be seeing you again soon!

NANY (Atkins 2010) does have people eating a LOT of food with those 12-15g NET carbs. I've also noticed over on the official site that they really push eating a minimum of 1500 calories and preferably 2000. While that may work for the younger gals, mature women usually don't need that much food.

There are a fair amount of older women over there and I wonder how they are doing with all that food. I've been following DANDR 2002 for 10 months and I'm please with that although I'm thinking of trying Atkins '72 when I start my yeast diet in a couple weeks. It really does seem much simpler and it looks easier to control the amounts of food you eat based on what amounts work.

The trouble with following Atkins '72 is that this forum is the only place I've seen for support. I'm glad that LCF has a little corner set aside for the '72 folks.

It's been so long, but what is the difference between Atkins '72 and DANDR? I have the new Atkins 2010 and know what that's about.

I have cleaned up my eating over the past week and I am seeing great results. I think how I eat now is very Atkins 72ish

I found that I ran into a few pitfalls by eating legal foods that still caused me to binge. These foods include:

1. heavy whipping cream
2. Cream cheese
3. Peanuts
4. Atkins bars (These things might as well be snicker bars)

Now my diet mainly contains
1. Meat & Eggs
2. Salad
3. Veggies
4. Hard cheeses
5. Sunflower seeds

The simplicity is working well for me. I don't drink diet soda and don't consume aspartame and avoid sucralose. Mainly I am using stevia but I believe there is some sucralose in the bbq sauce that I use.

I plan to have the occassional berry but I don't plan to add consistent consumption of low carb fruit and low carb baked goods until I am about 15-20 pounds from goal.

For those of you who like to go to thrift shops and garage sales, my local Goodwill has about 5 of the old Atkins 72 books for .99! I think every woman in the world owned one of those books in the 1970's.

the DANDR book says you can have cream cheese.....just count it as your "cheese" allowance. 3 to 4 ounces daily....

I have my 72 book here somewhere, but can't find it

"Kiss" or "Keep It Simple Stupid!"

Ever hear that ole adage before? Well, while on the Atkins site I constantly see that people are struggling to get their 20 net veggie carbs in each day and asking questions about how to do it. I noticed that I was doing this my own self and actually stressing about it. Quite simply, when you get to this place isn't KISS more sensible? I don't want to over think my daily menu. For me maybe a salad for lunch and some cooked veggie for dinner is a no brainer. Are we to believe that we won't lose as fast if we don't up the veggie count? As an older gal it's hard enough but this is making the whole thing back to the counting calories level. What say you???

Just saying,

SuzeQ,I agree with you! I'm just plodding along the best I can. Some days I get "enough" veg. and most days I don't. I also do total carbs not net carbs. It works for me.

Sheila, you don't need to re-join. We're all just doing our best. Some days we are more successful than others. The thing to do when you fall is to get right back up and get back on your plan. We'll all get there in our own time.

I've been 'on Atkins' since June 1, 2010. Today is August 22, 2010. I have lost seven (count 'em - SEVEN) pounds. FANY isn't working for me. So I've decided to go back to the '72 version, which DID work for me. No more Atkins bars, no more 12-15 NET carbs, just salad veggies and following the rules. I've been so hungry on FANY, because I can't eat enough veggies, and eating more meat and cheese increases my calorie count over 1800. So back to zero carbs, two salads a day, lotsa fat, moderate protein, and no concern over calories! Wish me luck!

I do wish you luck,Kaelinda! I think that we each have to find what works best for us. I'm pretty much with you. Keeping it pretty low carb and not worrying about much else. The older I get the harder it is to lose, but,I've lost 40.6 lbs. since April 16th and I'm very happy with it.

Bein Me: Love your Avitar and signature!! Wow, 40 plus pounds since April is awesome!

I popped in here because I just read the Atkins' 72 book for the first time. I've never done it before. I heard about Atkins, but always heard the bad stuff (like "it raises your cholestorol and clogs your arteries" and all you eat is too much fat and greasy burgers and blah, blah, blah...)

So, I was afraid to even think about trying Atkins! However, after reading some posts on this site I decided to get the book on Amazon.com

What a great read! And now I'm quite ready to dive in. My start date is TOMORROW, 8/25/10 because I wanted to go shopping today and get myself all prepared for success.

I lost 23 pounds doing Stillman's this year. However, due to vacations, family commitments, stress (you know the same old story) I got back into the carb indulgence habit on a daily basis and gained back about 10 pounds this last month! Grrrrrrr!

Usually I post on the Stillman thread but thought it might be helpful to pop in here for some advice. Hope that's ok??

For the first time in a while I think that, mentally, I'm in the right frame of mind to get this ball rolling and knock off the lard my DH is not married to!!! (there is a lot of it. hee-hee).

First goal is gonna be 30 pounds. Figure if I can do that, I can do anything!

Psalm 37:4 "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart"

I'm sure He is GIVING me the desire in my heart to lose weight. Now I believe He will GIVE and FULFILL that desire as well!

Welcome aboard, yam-yam! Hope you find Atkins '72 just about the best diet and way of eating you've ever encountered, since it really is natural and your body should just lean happily right into it. There are exceptions to that, and I might be one of them, since my wieght gain hasn't been due to overeating.

I'm 68 years old, unable to exercise any part of me save my fingers and toes, and run out of oxygen by just looking hard at someone. I'm taking enough medications to put weight on me even if I were to give up eating, and the doc says I can't do without any of 'em. So I'm stuck with plain ol' dieting! Up until June 1, I had held the same eating habits for all my whole born put together. I weighed 135 a month out of high school in 1960; 127 when I went to Israel in 1988, and 135 when I got sick with cryptogenic organizing pneumonia in October, 1991. Twenty years later, I had gained 100 pounds - five pounds a year, due mostly to medication and being unable to exercise. Will dieting take it off? Atkins '72 is my last home! I lost 7 pounds on FANY - all water weight, of course, and see no promise that I'm gonna lose any more. I'll keep working it at, though... Just because I think it would be great to surprise the family when I see them at the end of October! [img]http://images.lowcarbfriends.com/lcf/bbs/images/smilies/kicking.gif

Aww! I gave in to temptation and had some macaroni & cheese with hamburger today - sort of like hamburger helper, but home made. A single serving is about 500 calories and 30 carbs! http://images.lowcarbfriends.com/lcf...milies/doh.gif

But back on the wagon tonight! I had hamburger patties and steamed broccoli florets smothered in butter and cheese for dinner, then sugar free jello for dessert. For a snack, later tonight, I'll have cheese crisps (to make them, cut a slice of American cheese into 16 squares, put them around the outside edge of a sheet of parchment paper on the turntable in your microwave, and nuke 'em for 2 minutes - they taste pretty much like cheese nips or cheese-its).http://images.lowcarbfriends.com/lcf...ilies/wink.gif

Going to Go Advanced didn't make the smilies work. What I did was drag them from the column where they all reside into my text - apparently that's not the way to make them work. What do I have to do to get them to show up in the text rather than show up as a url?

So, I oficially started Atkins for the first time ever yesterday. Believe it or not, I did not ever have the book until about a week ago when I got it on amazon.com!!! Over the years I just believed all the stuff I heard about the Atkins diet --- you know, like it will give you bad cholestorol, clog your arteries, etc. I believed the powers that be who said all fat is bad for you and many times I tried to go on low-fat and almost fat-free diets!!!

You can imagine where that got me! Now, after reading the Atkins '72 book I am amazed at how much sense it all makes.

So, I'm on board and ready to see some progress!
