Alcohol-Daily Self Challenge-Moderating

Hello friends! I started the original "alcohol" support thread on 1/1/13.. It branched off into two separate threads - NOT currently drinking, which is still going strong, and then those of us still drinking but trying to moderate and being accountable by posting here. The moderation thread fizzled out and I left LCF for 7 months or so. I'm back and know I could use some support in this area. This is the biggest obstacle in my long term success for health.

Is anyone with me? Would you like this place to be accountable and set your own challenges?

Here was my original introduction 11 months ago - and I think it could still work today:

It's January 1, 2013! Is alcohol affecting your health and weight? Do you want to abstain ?? Would you like to Moderate?? Sometimes throw in a Drinking Day?? Something in between? You set your own goal on a weekly or monthly basis!

AF=Alcohol Free Day
MOD= Moderation day (whatever that means to you)
DD=Drinking Day

Check in here daily to get/give support and be accountable. Let your friends know how you are doing. Use it as your self-journal. No judgement or criticism!!!...

I'll go first...

December is the month where I throw all caution to the wind since it's the holiday season. After all, I'll be starting over in January! Well, this year I do not want to have that attitude! I want to continue with my 5:2 Fasting program and develop and maintain good habits leading into 2014.

Alcohol does not affect my life other than my health. It does not affect my relationships (DH drinks, too), or employment. However, f I don't have my health I will have nothing. I am so grateful to my body for being able to handle all the excess weight and alcohol for all these years. I know that one day it will just break if I don't take action. Now is as good a time as any!

My 5:2 plan has me eating very low calories (500) two days a week. During these two days I do not want to drink my calories, so I will automatically abstain for 2 days a week. So far this has worked fine in the 2 weeks I have been doing the plan. The other days at home I want to limit myself to 1 glass of wine during the week - no hard liquor. I'll let myself have 2-3 at home on the weekends with only one drink being hard liquor (I like a bloody mary on the weekends). When I am out with friends I will limit myself to 2 drinks of any kind that I want.

This week I want my plan to look like this:

M-AF
T-Mod at 1 glass wine
W - out for dinner- Mod at 2
T-AF
F-Mod at 1 glass wine
Sat- Mod at 2/3
Sun- Mod at 2/3

I will join moderation lady!



I'm going to have 2.5 glasses tonight. (half the bottle). I drink a dry red so that is about 12.5 carbs as well. So I will try and drink it without foods that fatten me.

When this bottle is gone, I am switching to zero carb whiskey or something. I can't drink carbs anymore, wedding in 18 days!

Hi Dezi,

Welcome! YOUR wedding? Congrats!

I did not drink yesterday on my "fast" day.. I will drink tonight - 2 glasses of chardonnay wine - when I am out with the girlfriends. This excellent Italian restaurant in town has "Tipsy Tuesday".. every Tuesday glasses of wine are only $2 bucks! I live in a tourist town, so this is a HUGE deal! They are usually between $8 and $10.

I know that the spirits are zero carb, but they make want to eat more of whatever is in sight.. I also like sweeter mixers, and sometimes diet 7up or diet tonic just won't do!

Stay with your plan - I will, too!!

Is it bad I don't have it planned? I haven't picked my days yet!

I will have to figure out what works dietarily because my seamstress just told me I need to lost 5-7 lbs or my dress won't fit right! (its tight and has those crinkles clothes get when they are too tight) How embarrasing! I will certainly need to get back to my end goal weight. I ganed 5 due to halloween, thanksgiving and the weather (keeping me inside).

Hey I just found this website from Britain about moderation! Its really cool, and has quizzes and advice and guidelines I never heard of! I did not know a "unit" was not a "drink" like a shot, or glass of wine!

My goal today is almost 5 "units" Yikes! I had no idea! they reccomend 2-3 a day.

I'm going to take their quizzes and maybe sign up. Also my drinking goal will be to eventually fit in to their guidelines. After the wedding of course, too stressed out to try now! I alread fit their guidline about 2 dry days a week (if not more!)

Hi Dezi,

I checked out and registered for that site you mentioned.. Kind of scarey! DH and I went out yesterday for an impromptu fun casino day and I drank way too much.. I put that into the info for the day, and WOW.. not good.

I have a tendency to put what AL is doing to my health out of my mind. Sure, there is the weight aspect, but the liver aspect is so much more. After the holiday season is over I am going to really cut down even more. Possibly try for a full 30 days alcohol free. Oh my, haven't tried that in 30 years if not more!

Today is a non-drinking day for sure since I am doing a fast day for my weight loss program. Tomorrow I will limit myself to 1 glass of wine. Over the weekend we have no plans but I have a lot of work to get done on my computer. I'll set a start time much later in the afternoon and limit myself greatly.

Your plan looks great Dezi! Good luck!

I too was higher than I wanted. But I am doing AF today and Sunday to make uo for it.

I need low calories today too because I havent lost and weight for my dress in 3 days

Yesterday-5
today-AF
Tommorrow-2
Sunday-AF
Monday-1

After that I am switching to "units" I think. Of the hard stuff. I still have half the bottle of wine left.

I backdated mydrinkaware profile from thanksgiving (that is as far back as I can remember as far as drinks). It turns out that I drink like a man. I am right at the 21 reccomended units or less for men. I had a whopping 7 (units not drinks) on T-day (my mom kept giving me shots to reward me for cooking the turkey! LOL. I am an amazing turkey baker). 3 small shots and 2 small glasses of wine is 7 unitis. Kinda strict if you ask me LOL. Then I had 3 AF days 3.2 units and 3.4 the next. Then last night was 8. This makes 21.6 units all week!

Soooo. I am going to shhot for 18 units this week and then 15 the following week and then down to 14 (forever!).

SO even though I am way over their recs I am proud to say I have more then there minimum AF days as well. Also I am tall like a man so maybe that explains it

Even though the site is pretty strict I would like to shoot for it, it will help me curb my drinking alone and thing of ways to "wake up" after an earlier in the day drink. Like have coffee 2 hours later so I don't feel sleepy (thats what makes me drink more than I planned to, the sleepiness after stopping).

So by the time the wedding rolls around I should be at 14

Also my DFs mom is a teetotaler so I will be AF most of the honeymoon (we are going to her place for a while.) That should reset me! 11 days except for restaurants and maybe new years eve!

I think your goal is good since after the holidays are when people make resolutions.

I will buy a "liver love" supplement for my resolution!

It really isn't worth drinking if I feel like crap the next day. Not that I totally abstain since I do have my moments of drinking with clients and the occasional Saturday evening. These days, coffee with egg nog in the evenings goes a long way.

Happy Friday! I am up and at 'em early today.. Good night sleep - always better without alcohol the night before. Today is a very moderate day. 1 glass of wine tonight.. I don't want to ruin my hard work yesterday when I fasted.

I could never drink coffee in the evening! I'd be up all night!

Dezi, I have to figure out what "units" are on the site.. And, they have things in "ml".. I had no idea and just guessed about what I drank Wedns. at the casino. It wasn't good though - since the column for the day was in red.. oops!

yes the units are tough. a standard glass of wine is about 2 units on there. so 2 smalls or 1.5 "standard" 6 oz glasses is 3 "units". also 45mls is a "shot" here in the states but 35 mls is 1.2 "units". the closest they have is 50 mls.

I am going to try and have underfull shots close to 30mls (2/3 full shot) to make "unit" drinks with diet dr. pepper.

I had a 3 oz 1 unit glass today!

Yesterday-2

Mon-2 units of diet and jim beam

Dipgal howd you do?

I am having a 4 oz glass. 1.6 units.

Yesterday-1 unit (3oz mini glass)
Today- a regular 4 oz glass
Tommorrow- Undecided!
Mon-AF (I have finals, I cannot be relaxed)
Tue- 2 glasses.

I have met my goal with at least 2 AF days this week so I will have to be happy with that.


The thing is I thought we were out of wine but DF found a bottle of Shiraz in my car trunk! All chilled and everything! So much for my AF day today, and I am also putting off the hard stuff too!

ugh, I really thought being accountable here would help me.. but, it hasn't - especially when I am home and bored. I am doing fine on my fast days when I'm AF.. Okay when out for a meal, too.

When I am bored on a weekend day I entertain myself with booze and playing online poker.. Pathetic.. I drank much more than I wanted to yesterday. Lost count actually. I am going to really really try not to do it again today. I have to teach myself to make a video with some footage I shot. I have no clue how to do it - and I need to be sober until I get my work done. LOL

Sounds like you are doing MUCH better than me!

So, what are you going to school for? You sure have a lot going on Dezi!

Well I drank more than my 1 last night, I typed it in before I was done with it LOL.

Is your booze at least LC? mydrinkaware reccomends putting your 2 AF days in a row in case you went over your plan.

Yesterday-3 4oz glasses
Today- (Undecided!)
Tommorrow- AF (Theres no way I would drink on a finals day right?)
Tue- The rest of the shiraz (depends on today, maybe 2, maybe AF)


I still think accountability helps even if you go over what you planned. According to my charts, even though I am over, I am still better off than last week!

I noever drink "out" because it is so much more expensive. And I always drink in front of someone (DF) who either doesn't drink or drinks way less. Socializing helps. When I am alone I have videogames, and feeling buzzed always messes up my gameplay so I can't drink and play.

Today was AF. Yesterday was 3. Tommorrow might be AF as well, it depends, nothing in the house and the weather is BAAAD, might stay in.

Dezi, you are lucky that your DF isn't a drinker.. My DH is a heavy drinker. It's what we "do" as an activity together, and has been our routine for almost 30 years. Old habits are tough to break!

I was AF yesterday on my "fast" day. Today I am going out to dinner with friends and will have 2 glasses of wine. Tomorrow night I am also going out to dinner with friends and will (try to) limit myself to 2 drinks. These will be some yummy French Martinis though.. They are so delicious that it's sometimes hard to sip slowly! Thursday is another fast day, so AF. Friday I'll probably have 2 glasses of wine at home. I am going out of town to visit friends Saturday-Monday, but they aren't heavy drinkers.. just light.. so, that will be a good thing.

The weather here is VERY cold - like zero degrees right now.. but sunny.

Been AF today so far. No time to drink in between all the teas I have to make

It makes me feel bad that I drink more than him actually. Statistics say relationships are worse when she drinks more than he. :/ laaaaame double standard.

IDK this british site is working wonders for me

Hope these teas ive been drinking help me get my TOM before the wedding LOL!

update on my "AF" day. We went out to lunch and we split a flight of microbrews. 10 3 oz microbrews from the pacific NW. But it was a late lunch. So nothing tonight. Im actually having coffee right now because I never drink that early. So weird for me to drink at 2pm.

Yesterday and the day before that were AF and today was 15oz of beer (I will round up to a pint for the mydrinkaware) Tommorrow, we shal see! It will depend on the scale, and finals studies etc!

Yesterday-AF
Today-Pint
Tommorrow-AF?
Friday- Celebrate graduation. Probably 3!

Advent and wedding planning kept me offline a lot.

I was AF all days since my last post except 2 days ago, when I had 3 or 4 jim beams. I forgot to log it in the mydrinkaware. When its a strong drink like that I lose count. But I will look at the bottle and guesstimate! I had no problems with ill effects or weight. I drank a lot of water and took a multivitamin!

I think I will be AF until the wedding so I may not post a lot.
