Non food, Non scale Victories

Let this be a place to celebrate the things we are grateful for. It might be a compliment, a new job, a good habit, baggy clothes, anything that we can celebrate with you.

I will start by saying it has been 10 weeks since I quit smoking. That alone explains why other things have been difficult. I forget to look at what I did right.

I dealt with two stressful issues at work, both involving saying no to people who didn't want to take a no. I could see their perspectives, but I had to say no. I was emotionally a wreck, but I survived without drinking or over eating.

Good idea for a thread.

Oh how I love this thread!

Great job Bella! Cici 10 weeks! Wonderful!!!

I'm working on controlling anger and anxiety- both tremendous triggers for binging/overeating. I have been successful at finding my breath instead of the package of oreos

Way to go, Bella! When we have boundaries around our food and/or drinking, we can create boundaries in other areas of our life.

This would be a good place to come and state 3 or 5 things I am grateful form on a daily basis.

Today Tuesday
1. Grateful for my faith in God
2. For my family and friends
3. For my health
4. For the security of my job
5. For a roof over my head
6. For the food I eat
7. For my 12 step program of recovery
8. For my abstinence from food addiction and sobriety from alcohol
9. For the beautiful blue skies and 60 degree weather today
10. For my eyeglasses so I can see this screen and can share with you all

Lisa, you are doing so so great. Finding your breath - Yoga?

Mary - thanks for the great list and reminders. Please do come back and share more. I don't know what your WOE abreviation means but you sure have come a long way. Congratulations!

I absolutely absolutely must stay in an attitude of gratitude and giving daily to recover from binging. I discovered another thing today. The process of writing a convincing cover letter for a job I would not normally think to apply for, gave me a more positive feeling about myself than before doing it. Not sure if that makes sense but it was a step out of the box that worked, at least for today.

Today I am grateful for the support of my husband and my commitment to myself. Following 2 really bad days at work I find that I am allowing negativity to creep in. That usually leads to anxiety (I'm not good enough) and then the feed monster arrives. I am trying to stay in these feelings and not stuff them down. A bad does not need to turn into a bad week, month, year.

I am grateful the the ability to reason that out...

I stumbled upon a wonderful book a few weeks ago that really spoke to me. It's called the Book of Qualities (but could be called the Book of Emotions). Here is what is says about anxiety.

“Anxiety is secretive. He does not trust anyone, not even his friends, Worry, Terror, Doubt and Panic … He likes to visit me late at night when I am alone and exhausted. I have never slept with him, but he kissed me on the forehead once, and I had a headache for two years …”
― J. Ruth Gendler, The Book of Qualities

I was experiencing some rather more intense anger than I am used to at the time (I knew I was angry vs. suppressing anger), and I got a kick over how it described anger. Stay tuned . . . .

ANGER-

Anger sharpens kitchen knives at the local super-
market on the last Wednesday of the month. His
face is scarred from adolescent battles. He has
never been very popular. His reputation as a fighter
dates back to seventy grade. Children never under-
stand how Anger arrives at the house just in time for
dinner. We never hear him ring the bell. All of a
sudden he is there. As soon as my son hears his
footsteps he is running for shelter underneath the
twin bed in the guest room.

Anger is trying to gain Truth's friendship and
respect. Anger is a meticulous reporter. He is accu-
rate about details and insist on fact. He
never lies,
but he rarely understands anyone else's
point of view. It is true that sharp knives work better
than dull knives; they are also safer. A cut from a dull
knife takes a long time to heal. However, if you have
not used a sharp knife for a while, it is easy to hurt
yourself. If you ask anger to sharpen your bread knife
be careful how you handle it. He is not the only knife
sharpener in town anymore.

Since reading that, when I become angry I tell myself "there you go sharpening your knives again."

Guess I will have to look that word up. Am thinking arteries.

Grateful I am not too old to learn something new each day.
Happy as a swamp toad that it will be sunny and about 80° for the first time this year.
Excited and nervous about an interview tomorrow.

Today I am grateful for my daughter. She is graduating college on Saturday. I am so proud of her and truth be told I'm grateful that her graduation warrants a day off of work for me too. Kinda like winning the daily double

Today I am grateful for a young crew member Dan at Trader Joe's and the cashier Pam in Nashua Nh

I have to share a story. Today my hubby drove me home from my daughter's. We had no food to speak of in the house as my husband was with me the last 3 days. We stopped at Trader Joe's and picked enough so I could make a salad, cooked some veggies and have some yogurt. While we were checking out, a young Crew Member came up to me with a bouquet of flowers and I looked down and said "Oh! My, aren't they beautiful! So many colors." He said to me "They're for you!" I thought he was kidding. He wasn't. I have to wear this strap around my chin until the doctors says that we are all set and the young fellow wished me a speedy recovery. I couldn't believe it. I was a loyal follower before but today I had tears in my eyes. I just had to share this with you all.

Awe, that is so sweet! Glad your surgery went well.

Today I am grateful for a good interview (hope).
Also, that some, if not all, of my summer clothes fit since I am heavier since their purchase 2 years ago.
Also, I have a little work for tomorrow and someone gifted me several boxes of hair color, all various shades of red so I can stay shiny for a few months.

Yesterday I had a scare. I was afraid there was an infection near one of the incisions from my surgery. I called the doctor and he met us at the hospital which was 50 mies away for a quick checkup. I get the sutures out on Monday

I am grateful for doctors who are dedicated to their craft and their patients.
I am also thankful to be free of infection. He calmed my nerves.

I feel the same way, Liz. Sharing the good things is so powerful. I get goosebumps reading.

I am about to go for a walk. I am not an exercise enthusiast but I am grateful for a perfect day weatherwise and legs that will carry me.

I am grateful for understanding & skillful nurses. Today they removed the rest of the sutures and one ear was draining. They are both pretty sore because the sutures got buried in the scabs. Sounds gross. But I couldn't see it, just feel it. Said lots of prayers whie they were working.

I showed the doctor a couple pics of me from 2001 when I was at my heaviest. I offered to email to him so he could see what he was working with. He told me there was lots of skin on my chin. He did a pretty good job. Very dramatic. It will be a month or two before I post any pics as I want to be able to use makeup.
