Hayek, Are you rootin for Michigan or Stanford? I am a Michigan fan because our Tom Brady in the New England Patriots was a 7th round draft pick. We love him.

Good job, Hayek. It's always good to have a plan in place.

Had a quiet night at home last night. Never even thought about having a drink. We are watching Breaking Bad in marathon mode so that has my brain well occupied.

Happy New Years Everyone!!
Sorry i have not been on in a few weeks - I have had some stress, but have not had any alcohol since November 27th.
I am very proud of that. DH tried to make jokes out of it like last night at dinner and I basically had to tell him to Shut up. I am not normally rude like that, but if you don't have a problem you don't realize what it's like to have one.
NO-ONE should have that power over you. The ability to make fun or joke, and prod someone about a decision they have made to make their life better should be taken out of human psyche.
I tried to be polite at first b/c we were at dinner with a friend. Well, it's amazing how in tuned you are with your real feelings when you have given your body/brain the chance to heal.
I read something one time about being sober, about how you start to feel, real feelings. And they will be strange b/c you have never really allowed yourself on a conscious level to feel.

I wish every one a Happy and Healthy and Strong New Year.

I second what Mary says. Good for you standing up for you.
Yes it can be challenging to deal with feelings when some of us are used to quelling them with alcohol.
But it is the real deal. Stay strong.

Still doing just fine here. I was going to attend a party on game day with friends, but the weather turned to crap before the game even started so I just stayed in and we all Skyped together for the game. (And Spartans were victorious!)

I wouldn't have been tempted at the party anyway since all they were drinking was beer and carby booze truly has no appeal.

Looks like we're about to get slammed with more snow so I'm probably just hunkering down and staying home for a few days since I won't have any real reason to leave. And there's no booze in the house so no temptation there (and if it's too gross to drive to the gym, it's too gross to drive to the liquor store).

@cmlloyd, I don't think it's rude at all to have to shut someone down when they're insulting you, especially if it's you're own husband (I think that's what DH means? haha). Partners should have way more respect for each other than that, in my opinion anyway, and if a boundary has been crossed or not clearly established, then I support the decision to lay down the law. If you set out to improve yourself, the people who care for you should support you in that improvement. I think not doing so says more about that person's character than the person wanting to improve.

I am about the brave the arctic blast to replenish my coffee and at 8 a.m. find myself thinking about buying wine! Where did that come from? I've managed to reason myself out of my rationalizations and am not going to come home with wine. An insidious worm found its way into my head.

Good for you talking yourself out of the wine. I, also have had some fleeting thoughts of wine but nothing I really had to talk myself out of, thankfully.

Hayek, you're doing great. It seems that you are recognizing situations that will be tempting vs. those that won't. Good job.

cmlloyd, good for you! Your DH needs to understand that you are serious and would like his support or at the very least not his baiting. It sounds like you have a good handle on your commitment to stay alcohol free.

Hi people,
I was away from this forum for awhile but now Im back, I did 14 months without alcohol and lost 30 pounds easily, I slipped back into the drinking and what do ya know I got fat again. So Im back to living sober and down 10 pounds in 3 weeks.

I also went back and read some posts I made in another alcohol support forum and a journal I was keeping, and discovered I was much happier not drinking, Ive concluded alcohol poisons both my mind and body, I dont need it in my life anymore.

Great conclusion, Pitch. I found journaling helps. Because when the day comes, where we think we can handle it, we can look back at the journaling and read what happened the last time we got into the drinking or food. I found alochol and food are selective memory situations. As time goes on, I only remember what I choose to remember! Good gping!

For me too, Pitch, drinking and weight are connected. Not drinking has spurred my weight loss, I am sure of that.

I had cravings yesterday. They surely connect to stressful events at work.
I was once again able to talk myself out of it . . . . I knew I would feel worse as a result. It's good to finally be in that space. I may never totally defeat occasional urges, so that's why the one day at a time mantra is sometimes needed.

Be strong everyone!

Sadly, I drank some wine this weekend.
The cravings had been building for several weeks and I caved.
I am back to day 1.
Be stronger than I was!

Don't let that mishap bring you down too far. Can you find a reason for the cravings.

Personally, I'm not sure I like the counting from day 1 stuff. It seems depressing and doesn't give credit for all of the days you stayed strong. Maybe instead something like XX days strong X days faltered. I feel like that is more representative of the accomplishments.

Right now I don't mind going back to 1 day . . . but I get what you are saying. I managed 9 or 10 weeks, not bad. If I had to give a reason, I would say stress at work. Preparing for a multi year evaluation, plus a some project deadlines hitting at the same time. I know that is what I've been responding to emotionally for the last several weeks. I think I'll be ok now for a while. No cravings today, almost like I had to get it out of my system. I probably knocked myself out of ketosis, but I'll get back in soon enough.

How are you doing?

I'm doing fine here. I've had cravings here and there but more of 'this is when having a drink would be nice' rather than 'I REALLY want a drink, like now.' So, all in all, I can't complain.

Man, do I belong on this side of the Low Carb Friends website!! ha. I'm an alcoholic in recovery. I stopped drinking 176 days ago. (End of July 2013) Best decision I ever made guys! And I was a very heavy drinker. I'd go through a 1.75 of Grey Goose every 3 days. This is the first time since my 20's I've attempted Atkins with no booze (I'm 41) and I'm excited to see MUCH better results this time around for obvious reasons haha.

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself .. I have about 50 lbs to lose... So I will be relying on you guys too! Hang in there y'all.

Welcome Aimee! Glad to have you.

I don't post here as much as I used to, I'm quite far along in my not drinking ( I dont say recovery because I know I will drink again) and I'm trying to keep it out of sight out of mind. So glad you are joining us.

I think the other thing that gets missed is the importance of supplements like B-1, Niacin,.... Alcohol really does a number on your body and it's ability to use some nutrients.
It's a shame that all we hear about alcohol abuse is related to driving while intoxicated and the possibility of getting arrested or killing someone, and nothing is ever said about the damage we are doing to our own bodies even if none of those extreme events ever happens.
It's like anti smoking campaigns talk about lung cancer which will affect some, but COPD will affect all. But you don't know what COPD is until your parent has it. OK, off my rant.

Ashwagandha helped me a lot too. Someone I know was talking about it so I ordered it online. I was in shock how much of a difference it makes ... I take about 4 or 5 capsules at night when I used to have a drink. (around 5)
It's not like having a drink, but for some reason it relaxes me and gives me a mild euphoria. I haven't drank since July of last year and find I'm not having difficulty at all... Don't even miss it.
