How much alcohol is too much?
I have been reading the alcohol recovery thread, and it really struck a cord with me. For a while now I have been concerned that I am drinking too much, and for the wrong reasons. I am not ready to give it up (probably in denial!), but would appreciate some advice. A normal night for me is at least two glasses of wine, sometimes three, and lately I have had more than that once or twice a week. Every day I think it is time to cut down, and every night I can't wait to have a glass of wine! I don't drink at all during the day, but nights are too tempting to refuse. Any advice is appreciated.

It kinda depends on the size of those glasses. Two standard drinks is ok - but the way most people pour wine for themselves makes about 2 standard in one glass... drinking every day and most tellingly saying that you aren't ready to give it up are more the danger signs here. Can you skip it for a night or two or would that drive you crazy? Would you be dying for a drink? If so, then you probably have an issue. I found the Moderation Management Boards full of good advice and support for those who don't want to stop altogether.

Thanks for the advice. What is the Moderation Management Board? I would like to check it out. I can go a night or two without a drink, but it reminds me of when I quit smoking - there is a craving there. I can manage it, but it is there.

Peggy,
If you are concerned about your drinking, you may or may not have a problem. I am a recovering alcoholic and have not had a drink since February 5 2006. I knew I had a problem because, more often than not, once I started drinking, I could not stop until I blacked out, passed out, etc. Also, MOST of my life's regrets and?or negative things have occurred because of alcohol. Basically, when I drink bad stuff happens. There is an online "quiz" you may want to try that can help you decide if you really have a problem. Try not drinking for a specified amount of time and see how you do. Although, I hope you are not an alcoholic, if you find you are, you belong to a very special group of people who with perserverance, know the real meaning of life. And remember, only you can say whether or not you are an alcoholic. God Bless |

I appreciate the advice. I don't drink until I black out, but once I get started, especially in stressful family situations (all the family for Thanksgiving for example), I usually drink so much I end up getting sick. I have decided to stop for at least a month and see if I can do that. If I can't, then I would suspect it is a problem.
I quit smoking 7 years ago, and I know the personal insights I gained from that, so maybe quitting drinking would be the same? Thanks for your post! |
