Hey Ellie, Saw your post and just wanted to share this info. Wasn't sure if you already knew
The hair pulling actually has a name Trichotillomania. "They" aren't sure if it's impulse control or OCD. I have done it and tried to pinpoint the times I pulled and it seemed to be at points of high anxiety. Fight with the boyfriend - pull, work issue - pull....it kind of puts the mind somehwere else. I'm not sure if it's similar for you but I wanted you to know you aren't alone.About Hair Pulling & Skin Picking | Trichotillomania Learning Center Trichotillomania Trichotillomania (trick-o-til-o-MAY-nee-ah) is a disorder that causes people to pull out the hair from their scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, pubic area, underarms, beard, chest, legs or other parts of the body, resulting in noticeable bald patches Hope I didn't tell you a bunch of stuff you already know! Lisa

hi lisa, thanks for the info. i had researched it when it was at its highest. i felt so out of control adn so alone. it made me realize that it is a real problem and i wasnt losing my mind. . .
for me it happens when im bored or getting frustrated/anxious about not losing weight or that im actually gaining weight. like when i go off LC. its much more common than people think, its just a little bit easier to hide, in my opinion at least. but im just glad that ive gotten a hold of it and dont have to worry about when DH plays with my hair and there was a good few months that iw ould shower with the door locked because i had to redraw my eyebrows in before he could come in. . . not a fun experience. that definitely made me realize that i had a problem and had to stop. . i just cant pinpoint 100% what triggers it. still working on it. . thanks for the support ![]()

Smokes. I have been smoking for probably 20 years off and on. I started low carb last year, and just recently started regular exercise. Once I get comfortable with my routine and I actually do it everyday I will seriously think about quitting. It's my next big hurdle. I don't think I could do two things at once. I might go mad!
I hope to not be smoking by this time next year. Hubby will be happy. He quit 5 years ago and I still puff away.![]() |

I keep replacing one addiction with another...
First was addicted to meeting men off the internet...for sex...slacked off on that - Then started smoking again...quit that and started binge eating - Gain LOTS of weight got up to 337...started low carb... - Started meeting men off line, compulsive shopping, and smoking AGAIN - got pregnant & stopped all - Started binge eating again - gained 70 lbs with pregnancy - I'm now trying to pay the credit cards off from the shopping, staying off "meeting" websites, NEVER going to smoke AGAIN, trying low carb again...but the binge eating keeps coming back. I've lost and gained the same 15 lbs for 6 month now. I'm trying to make exercise my new addiction...not sure it's working though!

I've debated and debated after reading different threads on whether or not I "truly" had and addiction and I have to say I have concluded that I most definately do. Food is my emotional addiction, it has been for many years and I've also battled it for many years. I've made myself a promise that this time I'm going to beat it once and for all, one day at a time. I am keeping a journal this time as well as turning to my spirituality to help me beyond the emotional excuses to destroy my body!
I've been a "closet" emotional eater for years, any emotion would bring it on, insecurity, anxiety, stress, you name it. How I convinced myself that by eating alone and after everyone went to bed, and sneaking to the drive thru's on the way home etc. was my own private secret I will never know! I guess I convinced myself that no one knew yet when I ate in front of everyone they would all mention how I didn't eat enough to be healthy and had I been to the dr? Here I was flattered that they noticed how little I was eating when in fact it was their nice way of saying...."look at all your weight your gaining on such little food, there has to be a medical problem". :duh: It truly amazes me what the mind will let us fool ourselves into believeing. Now I'm just taking things one day at a time, and coming here where I can find positive support rather than sharing with the people I know will just be negative about it and get me to sabatoge again. I'm glad I found this thread, and others who have these same issues. ![]()

Peanut butter became such a huge thing with me....most people would have one spoonful of it every so often, I had to have it everyday in the afternoon like clockwork...and usually would eat about half the jar if not more. I finally realized it was a problem when I got sick and tired of eating it, threw out the jar and then went back and dug the jar out of the trash. I made an appointment with a nutritionist the next day who told me some people she saw actually were addicted to peanut butter. I quit cold turkey and now on occassion will have one spoon of it and never sit down with it. If I stand by the pantry get one spoon of it and put the jar right back, I am good. Took me months of not eating it...seriously to get over the urge to have it everyday.

This thread is sorta old, but I want to contribute...I have trichotillomania too. It started when I was 9. I've never pulled from the scalp though. Keeping my hands busy helps a lot. For so many years I thought I was the only one with it. |
