Babsy, you say that not drinking is so BORING. Well, really think about it. What do you actually DO when you drink? You talked about your husband drinking and then sleeping. That's all he does. That sounds BORING to me.

Why am I saying this? Well, you got used to doing everything with a drink. You have to learn how to do everything without a drink now. You'll find out, that you were lying to yourself (the addicted part). Drinking actually keeps you from doing so many things and truly enjoying them. Drinking keeps you boring.

At first it is really hard. Then after time, you realize just how much you have missed out on. How truly enjoyable, every day things can be!!! You have the energy (and a clear mind) to relax and enjoy things.

I wish you the VERY BEST!!!!!!!!

Please don't underestimate the ravages of diabetes, Babsy.

I'd strongly suggest you make an appointment with the nurse-clinician at the Diabetic Clinic and have her give you an individualized training session. When you mention that you are an alcoholic, she will start with Big Time Tough Talk. To which I hope you will listen. Maybe the knowledge of how your lifestyle can help - or hinder - your diabetes will be enough, if not, there's help out there for your alcohol problem as well.

Mother's Day is just around the corner - think of the great messages you can be reading from your kids this time next year. Things like, "Mom, I'm so proud of you for taking yourself in hand and turning your life around." Even if they don't say it, you know they'll think it. Do it for your kids and grandkids. Most of all, do it for you!
just curious, what was the high side that he would let it run?

I am betting there are online support communities like AA or the other one that was mentioned here. I'm just being honest with you Babsy, you MAY be able to simply "power" through this, but I think your chances of doing that at your level are slim and I believe you are rationalizing it.

You should try googling online AA support communities cuz I'm tellin ya right now. This is a weight loss board. We give support MAINLY for weight loss issues. I don't think many of us are prepared to cope with the amount of support one needs to overcome an alcohol or drug addiction. You will find in time that your threads with pleas for help will fall on mostly deaf ears or people will answer you and then unfairly laugh or ridicule behind your back because they simply aren't equipped and fairly, it isn't THEIR battle.

I'm not trying to sound mean, simply trying to let you see that what you are doing is a real thing and a tough battle. But you deserve to get clean! You deserve to do this. You deserve to live a healthy and happy life. Do whatever it takes to do that!

I was very much like Fawn a couple of years ago. Then my health started deteriorating badly. I quit and resented it. For a while I was really angry and finally was able to work through the feelings. It took a long while. Today I have a couple of glasses of wine only on special occasions and sometimes not even then. And no. Weekends are not special occasions. I don't think everyone can do this. I may not have been an alcoholic but I was an abusive drinker, especially in my 20s and 30s.

As to what I do to replace the booze? I live. I live a normal life. I do normal things in the evening. I talk with Denny, I cook dinner. I clean the kitchen. I prepare for the next day. I read. I watch TV. Health permitting, I will go out into the garden or backyard (I wish I could walk but that's the next step). I work on craft projects time permitting. I take joy in life and in the little things. That's all. There is no magic bullet or pill or drink that transforms everyday, mundane life. But everyday life doesn't have to be mundane. Simply "being" is sometimes just lovely! No drama. No crisis. It's not boring to me.

There are groups and activities out there but I'm not much of a group person. Maybe you are? Go DO it! As NIKE says, "Just Do It"! Life is too short girl!

and google support forums today, ok?!

Allie I'm guessin they don't have alcoholics in Plano or McKinney. It's too "chi chi" of an area! McKinney Texas is north of Dallas about 45mintes to an hour maybe. It's on I-75 toward Sherman TX.

Social Distortion

Kinderhore,

Great advice you have proffered. By the way, I am impressed that you are a Social Distortion fan. I have hung out with Mike Ness after a show once and he was a genuinely good guy.

The simple fact of the matter is that alcohol will severly hamper your weight loss efforts. The precending is irrefutable. Living in NYC (and originally from New Orleans) I am intimately familar with the bar scene and the physical toll it takes on habitual nightcrawlers. While I am a frequent patron myself (trust me I am not above the fray) without question it has prevented me from obtaining the holy grail of physicality, namely the coveted six-pack.

Cut back on the booze, you will feel and look better

my 16 yr old came home last night and said, mom you didnt drink tonight, and I said no and she asked why not. I said cause I dont want to take insulin anymore and the drinking interferes with my diabetes causing me to have to take the insulin. She was proud. But I am just taking one day at a time and dont want to let anyone down. It is also an attitude of I dont want anyone telling me what to do, know what I mean?
Babsy, I totally *get* that you don't want anybody telling you what to do. In fact, you're describing me to a T! (Tough chicks rule! Oh, yes we do!!!) But being oppositional isn't helping you get to where you want to be, which is off insulin and in good diabetic control. Everyone had excellent advice about finding an online support group. You're obviously comfy in an online support group, so why not play to your strengths?

Babsy I think you're heading in the right direction... One thing I would suggest to you is to look into Al-Anon as well as AA or maybe even before if it's easier for you. Al-Anon is for the folks who have to deal with alcoholics and I think it might be a way for you to sidle up to the AA as well as help you deal with your husband and break loose of the habits and routine you are in and I think while you have the strength for yourself you are going to have to learn how to deal with him too. Al-Anon can benefit everyone, IMO, it's just about responsibility, coping and standing on your own two feet.

As for the not drinking, I've been on the wagon just to lose weight through the winter and spring and what I notice is there are little urges to drink b/c of the habit, when DH first gets home and we're chatting about our days, sitting in the yard on a nice day, camping, the times when we always have a drink. So at those times I feel a little nudge-but if you get past the nudge the urge will go away again until the next nudge. So have a plan in place for those times, someone to call (your daughter?), grab that paint-by-number, walk to the mailbox, have something there to fill the void b/c if it's just you and the void you're going to have a very hard time and suffer needlessly! What I've been doing to stay away from food and drink: playing with the dog, gardening, brushing the horses, playing with the kids, walking a lot, doing little projects that I've been putting off, talking to my mom on the phone, catching up on paperwork, ect... Fill those "empty hours", get a job, take an evening class, get out and about, do things that are incompatible with drinking... you can do it, people do it every day. It's hard to change any habit or break any addiction but it's do-able! Get all the help and support you can, surround yourself with it and steer yourself away from the traps and slippery slopes...

Babsy, you do need to find support other then "Just us".

You see, your problem got this bad because you fooled yourself and everyone else around you.

The promises, the justification...etc.

Being with others who have been through the same thing keeps you accountable. Your family members are enablers and you have enabled yourself. You need to be around people that can "Spot" that behavior (in you and your family memebers) and nip it in the "bud" and give you tools to "change" the behavior.

It's not as simple as not having a drink again. You also have to learn how to cope with your problems and actually learn how to deal with them. After all, Alcohol was your escape from dealing with them.

It's not just about you. Your children, your husband, your friends and other family members have been involved in this "Merry go round" too. You Consciously and subconsciously know how to "Play" people to get what you want (The same thing can be said for them). Without the knowledge and "tools" to not only Spot this, but learn how to change it and deal with it... It would be hard. It would be extremely easy for you to fool yourself.

Could you do it on your own? Maybe, but your circumstance with your husband makes it even harder for you. By you not drinking, he will subconsciously have behavior to set you up for a fall (it's to protect him and justify his own drinking). Things will get much worse, before they will get better. Without the Knowledge, support and the Tools, it would be easy to just "Give up"

You need Tools, you need Knowledge and you need someone to help you spot the pitfalls along the way and how to actually "deal" with them.

By all means, we will all be here for you, but you need a stronger support system to help you with all that.

They say it takes 18 months to get over any addiction (including food) to feel normal and to not actually think about it ALL The time.

I don't really have any advice for you, just some big hugs and encouragement for you.

My husband is 8 years clean and sober, and he did it without AA. He did get some counseling from our family minister though. For the most part, he did it on his own.
It's not impossible, but works much better with a great deal of support.

Don't let the distance that AA is from you be a roadblock. You can do this!

Life is so much better this way. We were ll <--- this close from separating. Now, life is very good.
