Do you enjoy exercise or do you do it because you know it's good for you?

Exercise has never been a favorite of mine. I tried a treadmill and my right knee and my hip hurt. So I borrowed a friend's old stationary bike and tried that. My butt hurt. Sat on pillows to make it more bearable and got up to riding 45 min twice a day. I found an old recumbent cycle at a yard sale and bought that and would do that in the mornings until I broke my little toe last summer and my exercising stopped at that point. I'm trying to get back to it again - I did 2 miles morning and evening last Monday and 2 miles on Tuesday, and I did walk on the treadmill that's in the yardsale stuff on Saturday, 1/2 mile in the am and 1 mile in the pm. I just can't get motivated. Yet.

I LOATH EXERCISE!
Ok, with that said, I do it because I have to. And to be honest, I don't do that much. I'm getting better. Most of my exercise is walking, which I do enjoy somewhat. Lisa |

My relationship with Exercise is a love/hate thing. I really DO love doing it, and I love the IDEA of being a person who exercises, but when it comes RIGHT DOWN to doing it, it is REALLY hard to keep myself doing it every day. When I ask myself WHY, I can't even come up with a good answer, except that I must be extremely lazeeeeeeee!

I guess I regard exercise as a necessary evil. Twentyfive years ago I was in an accident and broke my neck. After months in the hospital, and months more of therapy, I continued to exercise. And now I find that the older I get, the more I want/need to do. If I miss a few days, I really feel it in my back and neck. I walk, ride a recumbent bike, do water aerobics, and FIRM videos.
I want to answer yesterday's QOTD. For years my family and I lived in church housing, and couldn't do anything without going through a committee. Now, we live in our home. When we first moved in I wallpapered wherever I wanted. Our bedroom is in shades of green, blue, lavender and cream. The walls are cream satin-striped, with a floral border. The bottom half of the wall is floral paper. I LOVE it - it's all mine, and I didn't have to endure two hundred opinions from church ladies before I did it.

Some days I LOVE it...other days...it never crosses my mind. For me, working out has to be an everyday thing, if I skip a day, I swill skip ALOT of days.

I have been finding that once I get motivated and do it for more than a few days in a row... I am okay.... but it seems when I get stressed out with my kids or just feeling like I dont' have enough time for myself..... I get more annoyed and I don't want to do it at all.... so if I skip a few days it is VERY difficult to get back into doing it.
This past month and a half our car has been broken and I have HAD to ride my bike or walk to get groceries, take son to school, etc......So I have HAD to do it... and that is fine, but now that the car is fixed.. I can see myself not wanting to walk him to school anymore.... I want to get it done quicker...but I know once we get moved and settled the hectic time will be over and I can ENJOY walking and riding bike and hopefully get into a strong habit of doing it again!!

Getting motivated is rough, but when I'm doing it, it feels great, and it feels amazing afterwords.
I just wish my sister hadn't accidentally sent my carmen Electra DVD's back to the rental place, I gotta wait for them to mail them back now. (yes, I'm using it as an excuse not to exercise, so I can't stay mad ) |

Great question! I love a good, long walk, always have. It helps me mentally as well as getting the blood flowing.
Frankly, the more I read about LC and exercise, I am convinced that weight loss is 90% what I eat, and 10% being what I exercise. So any more, I exercise for sanity versus for weight loss, and for some reason that makes it that much more appealing. I have always harbored fantasies of being a sinewy runner, and have run a race or two in my day, but will need to ditch some more weight before delving into that again. To those who hate exercise, I still say "Stay on plan and you will be rewarded, whether or not you exercise." Lesley

"so if I skip a few days it is VERY difficult to get back into doing it."
When I was doing it regularly I had a feeling that if I didn't do it everyday than I would end up quitting. So when we went camping in the fall of 2003 I took my old small stationary bike and rode it in our pop-up camper so I wouldn't lose the motivation. I bet it was a site to see from the outside with the camper rocking and the wheel squeeking. Glad I had the curtains closed. When I broke my little toe and could hardly walk I gave up and it's been a struggle every since to do any exercises. |

Amc - that is too funny. I look at exercise as something I do for stress relief, also. I'm fortunate enough that the building I work in is in a lovely wooded setting and I can often get in a 40 minute walk at lunch. Even though I live in the mountains the climate is pretty temperate, so I can pretty much walk year round.
My water aerobic class is social - I've been with the same group of women for over eight years. |

When it comes to conventional exercise, i can't stick to it to save my life. But i love playing like a kid and camping/hiking, and lake swimming. That stuff i can do, but i stay away from gyms.

I can only get myself to do exercise I like...I used to play broomball several times a week (yes, even in the summer!). I was a runner from age 8 to about 30 (although I did quit a few times), but the older I got the less I enjoyed it. Then I discovered speedskating (ice in the winter, inline in the summer) and I love it! I compete regularly and have an on-line coach who sends me workouts...but, while I have no problem completing the on-skate workouts, I frequently find reasons not to do the dryland stuff or the ab/back exercises that I know I should be doing. I'm really lucky I found a sport that I enjoy and that I'm somewhat good at, or I'd probably never get off my butt!!
Sadly, it's raining today...no skating!
