OK I downloaded the mp3 version. I'm going to try to start Sunday. I'm scared because I've never ever been able to run. Plus I am just starting back to working out after a month of sittin on my big ol butt.

I walked on the treadmill for 20 min at 3.5mph today not counting 5 min warm up and cool down. If I would have had someone to talk to I maybe could have talked but would have rather not. So with that said how fast do ya'll think I should try to run at?
thanks

Listen to your body, if you can jog at 3.5, then do that, if it's too fast or slow adjust slowly. Take a walking break when you need to and most of all, enjoy it!!! I made the mistake of trying to get my body to do something that it couldn't at first and hated it.... now, its fun to try and get further each time but always listening to what my body is saying.

Have you been back to walking for awhile now? If not, you may want to continue walking and just adding in 1 minute runs for now?

Congratulations on getting back into it!!!

I hate running on the treadmill and like running outside but not in the heat!

Do you guys just run in the mornings? I have to work at 6am, and it doesnt get 'cool' (ie under 90) until like 9pm. Getting up early for me would be like 4AM!

I guess I need to learn to jog in the heat.

I just finished the first day. boy.. I usually walk the treadmill for 20-30 minutes at my gym before working out. but.. after doing this, I was sweating so much, I decided to skip the workout as I forgot to bring a towel. It is bad gym etiquette to not mop up after yourself if you are sweaty. but.. the thing about sweating is it sure feels good after you shower!

I'm having the same issue with heat and time of day being my killer. I hate running in 90+ degrees, dont want to run on a treadmill and work at 6am so getting up earlier than I already do would mean running at 4 in the morning...which would suck.

I do have 3 days off a week though and am thinking I should get up and jog at 6am on wed/thurs and sundays. I really should huh?

Des, yes. If I get the chance to run in the morning when it is cool, I do it. It is just too hard after a long day a work + the heat.

Bethy, get your butt up and get outside!!! you can do it. You know it makes you feel great once you're done. come on do it!!

aloise, go for it. The beginning days seem sooo hard, but after a few weeks and you look back, you will be soo proud.

question for those people that can run 30 minutes...

how does it feel to be able to do this? do you feel good afterwards? or wiped out

and does it keep getting easier? do you think about running longer?

aloise: I went from not being able to run more than 30 seconds that first time to being able to run 30 minutes.

I feel wiped initially when I'm done but then it's like I get a second wind and the rest of the day I'm practically bouncing off the walls.

And I get a wonderful sense of accomplishment from it.

I'm currently working on a program that will take me from 30 minutes to an hour of running.

Unfortunately right now I'm a treadmill runner because I can't handle the heat and get the time in. So, when Fall gets here and I start running outside I may start the program again just to get adjusted to being an outside runner.

Hi.

I can run for 32 seconds then I feel like I am dying. *laugh*

I've always envied runners, thinking running looks like such an escape and an incredible destressor and release.

I've always said runnings just not for me, though lately it's been on my mind and I've been wanting to learn how to run, though thinking that there is NO WAY. lol

I think the thought of running has become so attractive to me because I am as of this Summer, suddenly so busy, that I really feel the need for a physical healthy release.

I am a married mom (11 years on the 17th!) of two boys (10 and 8 in October ), and I started back to college FT this summer quarter.

I also work in K-12 Special Education, and work will start back up in a couple of weeks. During the school year while I'm working, I'm going to go to school 3/4 time. I have an hour round trip commute to the college.

I've just started to look through this thread, and it seems very encouraging.

I'd like to start the program today If I find my running shoes!

Any tips for someone just beginning?

I'm still waiting for someone to come talk me out of this. *laugh*

Sunabee,
I don't think anyone is going to talk you out of it. I kinda hoped for that too. The closest I got to that was if it's been awhile since I've even walked much to hold off on starting the program right away but to try running for a min now and then during my walks. I was going to try that today but the A/c in my gym wasn't working very well and it was too hot for me to try something that brave lol

So getting up at 7AM and jogging worked out very nicely Week 2 isn't so bad. In fact my heart rate wouldnt even stay up. My heart rate watch beeps if I go under 124! I went under every 'walk' portion.

I know I've popped into this thread a couple of times in the past.
I do want to post more consistently here.

I am doing the Couch to 5K podcasts and other interval running programs (mainly Cardio Coach and Treadmill Trainer.

I'm currently doing Week 4. I do repeat weeks since I may do the Couch to 5k for 1 or 2 days of my 5 day workouts.

I'm focusing on distance.

I do my workouts on a treadmill. Maybe come fall I'll be able to run outside.

I'm trying to do my runs at 5.5 + on the treadmill and my walking at or close to 4.0

OMG! I ran today........I walked for 4min than ran (slower pace than normal) but I continued for over 15min, walked a couple more, ramped back up to run then finished with cooldown walk for 3 min, for a total of 30 min......... did 1.8 miles in 30 min.

That's the most I have ever run at one time, I still can't believe it. I had good music on and I guess the slower pace, but consistent helped me go longer.

Anyone who is starting.............I couldn't run 1 whole min without dying, then the next time I thought 3 min would kill me, but if you do it little by little YOU CAN DO IT! Listen to me my endorphins are kicking in

Thanks for the kick in the butt! I also did weight training after. That is my favorite.......but I really want to get this running as part of my lifestyle, with goals of running my first 5K race in Dec.

Sunabee - I just started with the jogging, I have to say I started out not being able to run 30 seconds! It does release alot of stress and just the accomplishment of jogging further, even if it's only for 1 more minute, really gets you going! I'm still not sure it's for me, but I'm going to give it some time and see. Hope to see you jogging in the thread! LOL

Bethy - WTG! See, that one more minute or I can make it 30 more seconds works!!! I'm certainly making my way up the ladder also! How fun to see everyone pushing themselves and getting just that much further!!

Desmona - Don't think about it, you can do it!!! (not sure I could LOL) But you cannnn!!!! The heat and humidity get to me too... I just ran outside, two lights poles, then walked one, then ran the next two etc. I have to break it up outside, plus I'm used to the treadmill, which to me seems easier?

WTG Everyone!!!

did day 2 of first week on the treadmill at the gym.

but... oh my!! I am sweating SO MUCH by the end! This time I remembered to bring a towel. the first day, I left after running, because I was sweating so much I didn't want to use any other equipment.

this time, I did my leg exercises afterwards.. as I want to give the legs a full 48 hour rest.

but.. I am not used to sweating this much! and this is the first week!!! What's going to happen when/if I'm able to run for 30 minutes? I will have to bring a bucket along! It sure feels good when I shower, though.

wonder if I'm detoxing? Isn't that why people go to suanas? so they can sweat all the bad stuff out? dang.. who needs a suana? just do the couch to 5K workout!

You're suppose to give them 48 hours of rest? *laughs* oops. Now I don't do leg lifts for 2 days but I do some form of cardio almost every day. I lifted yesterday and jogged this morning.

Honestly it loosened up my muscles SO much. Who knew a bit of jogging could feel so good!

Hi Everyone! I didn't know you guys were here.

1) What week/day are you on? 5/1 (tomorrow)
2) Are you repeating a week? most likely week 4
3) Are you running for time or distance? time
4) Are you running indoors or out? indoors
5) How do you feel? good

I started C25K 4 weeks ago. I work long hours, so I'm doing it indoors on a treadmill (also I'm not ready to be seen in public running ). I did go to a running store and get fitted for shoes (Brooks Addiction 7's) as I pronate severely.

I'm going really slowly when I run (only 3.8-4 mph on the TM), but I figure I can work on speed later. After all, I'm old! (52) It's also so hot and humid here, yuk. I kind of struggled with week 4, so I will attempt week 5 tomorrow and if it's too terrible, I'll repeat week 4. I often don't have time to do it before work, but then I'm so tired by the end of the day that I really have to push myself. I haven't lost a bit of weight (I am retaining water due to the heat), but I do feel that my body shape is changing.

We can do this!

Jazzy

1) What week/day are you on? Past week 4 started to just do my own thing
2) Are you repeating a week? I repeated weeks 2 and 3
3) Are you running for time or distance? both, time first
4) Are you running indoors or out? indoors
5) How do you feel? great

3.8 - 4 mph is what I did today for a longer time. I did couch to 5K until just about the 4th week, then I felt I could do it on my own and run farther at a time and shorter walks, so that's what I"m doing. I'm trying to get the 30 min total run in. I'll get there.......I think your doing great Jazzy!

Adding the running to my work out has def. helped in changing the body shape.

I didn't mean the cardio I meant the weight training. I would rather do the weight exercises for my legs the same day I do this couch workout. then give my legs time to recover before the next couch to 5K workout.

OMG OMG you guys I decided to just try my own thing cause I don't care for the music on the pod. I warmed up for 5 min then I jogged, I JOGGED!!! I figured if I could get to 30 seconds 3 times I'd be pleased as punch. At 30 seconds I decided to see if i could make it a full min and i DID! Let me tell you my calves were talking to me after that first min. I think they were saying what the heck do you think you're doing don't you know you're 46 now??? lol I did it not just three times like I'd hoped for but got crazy and did it 4 times.

I did slow my walk speed down from 3.5 to 3 mph and my jog was at 4mph so I guess that's a pretty slow jog but still I can't believe I did that
