I'm just calling it miles by foot now. Sometimes I jog, sometimes I run, mostly I walk, but today I traveled 5 miles by foot.
And I got a small order of fries from Steak & Shake after my exercise class. |

Tate - If I'm ever in your neck of the woods, I'll take you up on your generous offer. That kick boxing sounds like a lot of fun.
Deb - I'll be rooting for you in your 5 miler this weekend. Tigerr - Great to see you here and you are doing awesome with your fundraiser. Micki - Up to 5 miles already, you are doing great. Today I ran 47 minutes in the trails including some hilly cross country paths. I felt really strong and not sore from Sunday. If all goes well, I'll do a light speed run tomorrow (my last before my next race on the 18th). Dean

WAVE!
Missed visiting with all my virtual running buddies. The last two weeks have been so hectic. The grand finale was Brianna (my 3 y.o. DD) being badly bitten by a potentially rabid mouse/rat (they are in the #1 catagory for rabies in this area). It fell into an empty 5 gallon water bottle and DH thought it would be "fun" for the kids to see it. Well, our last neighbor had a pet hamster and the first thing I heard after my run that AM was that we had a pet hamster. When I found out that it was a wild animal, I told DH to ditch it in the jungle as soon as the kids weren't looking. Unfortunately it didn't turn out that way. During the liberation DD tried to handle it, at that moment one of our rescued Rotts tried to eat it, the rat bit the heck out of DD, the dog bit the rat....And DH had to rush off for the 4 hour drive to civilization with a dying rat in a jar and a screaming child in the back seat while I packed up the rest of our stuff for to move back home. The culmination was DD's first round of rabies injections. Apparently the rat/large mouse is too small to do a rabies scan, and even if they could, it would take longer than the 5 rabies vax. So that put a damper on our vacation in paradise. It's nice to be home again with my cats (and no mice or rats) and AC. Got in a sweltering 55 min run this morning. Actually managed one sub 9 min mile while I raced the family to school (they were driving) and arrived in time to kiss them all goodbye for the day. Then DH met me back at the house for a few more miles of sweltering together. Agony loves company Off to ride bikes with DS now. Then I need to catch up on what everybody else did last week! 8 hours of bookkeeping and data entry has left me bleary weary eyed.

Suzanne, that is one bad day and your poor 3 year old. I give rabies shots all the time. The first set is the worst because they get both the immunoglobulin and the rabies shot. The immunoglobulin goes around the bite and what is left in the shots. I say shots because the bigger the person the more they get. It is weight based. The vaccine they get day one and over the next 3 weeks or so is one single 1ml shot in the arm. I have given so many of these I have become the rabies expert in the ER.
Tate, I have never been coordinated for kick boxing. I am usually way behind and going the wrong direction. Tiggerr, when is your race?? I guess pretty soon. You seem to be raising more then my brother did. Micki, you are doing super. Dean, great running weather isn't it. I hope it stays that way for Saturday's race. I am doing it to see where I am compared to last year but in a way I don't want to because it is hard!!! Paul, how is the training going? did you start your TNT group training? Kelly, Bill, Jen and all the other missing runners come back. I saw Bam over in Jen's journal for a short post.Kathryn can be found on her blog. Today is cross training day for me. I did 3 miles of stairs and then upper body workout. Last night I ran 6 miles at my usual Tuesday/Thursday running location and it really felt great. My pace was a bit faster then my normal easy run pace because I ran with someone else. The hills are bothering me so hopefully the hilly race Saturday won't be so bad. My brother did his first marathon Sunday. He ran the Flying Pig in 4:30 and walked and ran the last 6 miles. He is now signed up for Disney Marathon. I am the only sibling to not do a marathon. Maybe someday but not in 2008, |

Suzanne - I'm so sorry about what happened with your daughter. To go through that at such a young age must have been horrible.
![]() Deb - Congrats to your brother in his first marathon. The weather has definitely been super for running. I hope the weekend is great for your race.Kelly - I hope the weather is great for your 5K as well. ![]() Today I ran a 5K tune up along the race course I am doing on the 18th. I'll describe the course in full in my race report, but I will say now that it has hills. With the weather being in the 80's, I thought it a good idea to get used to the feeling of running fast in the heat. That way I should be better prepared if it is like this on the 18th. I ran the whole 5K course hard, but controlled making sure I concentrated on form and effort on the hills. My finishing time was 22:58 which averages to 7:23 per mile. I have to say not bad considering I ran yesterday, it felt hot in spots and I wasn't pushing my all. After resting a few days, I should be able to toe the line on race day. Some clouds and 55 degree weather wouldn't hurt as well. ![]() ![]() Dean |

7 miles by foot today. I found a little dog along the way. He is an English Springer Spaniel and he has taken to me. I have taken to him as well, even though he peed on my hard wood floor. lol So now he is on a leash tied to me and behaving like a little gentleman.
I wonder if someone is looking for him? Sometimes people just toss their dogs out, expecially out here in the country. Right now he is sound asleep under my foot. Oops! I spoke too soon. ![]() |

I had to do a quick workout at the gym during dd's karate class. I ran 5 in intervals on the treddy at a good clip with leg weight exercises in between for just under 40 mins. I know that is kind of short, but it is all the time I had.
I could have gone for a quick run when I got home, but quite honestly, did not feel like it. Besides--I need fresh legs for r-ball tomorrow night!! |

Tate, the kick boxing sounds brutal! My kids are in tae kwon do and it is amazing to see how fast they can kick now!
Debbie, yuck on giving all those rabies vax. Even our pediatrician says that giving injections to kids is the worst part of his job. I've been making DH take DD because he started the whole misadventure (but we are speaking). Yesterday wasn't as bad as the first day but she doesn't feel very good for 12 to 18 hours afterwards. Almost stayed home from school today but decided at 5 mins to 8 (while DS was getting in the car) that she DID want to go. That's a good sign. Dean, anytime you want to practice running in the heat, just come on down. We only have a small hill but we have plenty of 90+ heat and humidity days in our future. I manage a nice one bedroom condo on the marina with central AC where you can relax and recover between runs! Micki, WOOT on nearing the big 100 day mark of not smoking. I know how hard it is and I promise you it will get better if you stick with it. Your weight is great and your mileage will just get better and better! Hope you find the dog's owners or that he learns not to pee on your floor I'm the same way with animals...And my best GF has a one woman animal rescue ranch in the jungle. She has 2 horses, 16 to 20 dogs, 13 to 15 cats, and recently lost an opossum she had had from near birth to 4 y.o. She tries to place them in homes, but many are not adoptable (vicious, deformed, injured, special health care issues...) I don't know how she does it. We've adopted a few of our pets from her; other's off the streets. It's good karma to adopt lost and/or unwanted animals. Off to bed now so I can get up early and run along the maleçon tomorrow AM (another trip to the capitol for business, the run is my best perk). It is really hard staying motivated during this weather. Wish Kathryn would check in with some tips or at least to share the misery. Somebody please slap me next time I complain about the heat. At least I don't have to run in snow and ice in the winter. |

Kathryn, welcome back!!! glad your foot is doing better.
Suzanne, last summer I went to Florida and ran in the heat and humidity. I started by 6:30 at the latest and if I went for over an hour it was horrible. The sun was strong by then and there was no shade anywhere. At least here we have shade on the Rock Creek Trail. I find I can't carry enough water on long runs. We do seem to get used to the heat( sort of). Tate, are your arms recovered from kick boxing? It has been a while since I have felt pain after a workout. Micki, that is alot of animals. Just one or two is expensive. Dean, you are so speedy!!! I can't imagine running that fast. Running tonight and it may be raining. I don't mind rain but we won't run in lightening and that is in the forecast too.I have Pilates and weights this morning but may lay off the weights since I lifted yesterday and have a race Saturday. |

Actually Tate, if you wait a couple of days, your muscles will return to 98% normal to where you could take the class again (in 3 or 4 days) and if you give it maybe less than the effort or duration from the last class you should find you have a little stiffness or no soreness at all the next day. And the next time, 3 day to a week, you should be able to go at the original effort or increase. You just can't wait weeks between efforts otherwise you start all over again. It's the same way for me to get my downhill legs in shape when I haven't ran downhills for a couple of months or longer. I go through a similar process.
