Carbohydrate Addict's Diet ~*~ Summer

Here is the information needed to successfully and happily lose those unwanted pounds.

The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet ** CAD/CALP

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello! Welcome to the thread for the Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet!

There are many of us here at LCF who have found ongoing success with the CAD diet. This is the place to get to know us and hopefully JOIN US! The people here are wonderful and supportive. We love to answer questions and cheer you on!

If you are interested in this diet, I highly recommend getting the book and reading it thoroughly. I will explain the diet, but you really need to go straight to the source. They certainly explain much better than me!

This diet works because it controls your insulin release, which is related to how you store and use body fat. (See the book for all the scientific references!) You are allowed only three meals and one optional snack on CAD. This is how the insulin releases are controlled. Two of the meals are called “Complementary Meals” (CM’s) and the third is called a “Reward Meal” (RM.) There is no calorie counting, no carbohydrate counting… it is a very simple diet so none of that is necessary. If you follow the rules, everything falls into place.

CM’s are essentially very low carb meals. You divide your plate in half, and ½ your meal is protein, and the other ½ is low carb veggie. Simple. There is a specific list of veggies to choose from, called “crave –reducing” choices. The list is pretty extensive, but it does not include all low carb veggies. You are allowed to eat from this list, and that is all. If it’s not on the list, you don’t eat it. (But rest assured, there’s so much to choose from you won’t feel restricted.) It’s easy and flexible, it just needs to be balanced, protein & veggie. It is very much like an Atkins meal.

The optional snack is the same as the CM, just smaller.

An RM is a flexible meal you can have for your choice of Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner. This makes it easy to plan for events like restaurant meals or parties. For the RM you begin your meal with a salad. Then you divide your plate into thirds. 1/3 is protein, 1/3 is low carb veggie, and that last 1/3 is ANYTHING YOU WANT. If it fits in that 1/3 balance, you can have it. Potato, Bread, Cake, Cookies, Candy, Noodles, Rice, whatever you feeling like having.

This does not give free license to pig out on carbs. It must be BALANCED. If you want more cake, you also have to take the same portions of chicken and green beans, too.

One more catch: This RM must be completed within a one hour time limit. This has everything to do with controlling the insulin release. This is very important. Also, you are not allowed to snack (aside from the optional complementary snack.) You eat three to four times a day, and that’s it. Believe it or not, this will not be a problem. Your meals should carry you easily to the next meal. It’s all about that insulin control.

Many people have the misconception that the RM is a 1-hour pig out all you can eat junk-a-thon. IT IS NOT. People also think that if they even have one taste of sugar they will binge into oblivion. THIS IS NOT TRUE. If you are true to the diet and stick to the 1/3 portion of carb, you will be just fine. You will be pleasantly surprised that the single slice of pie is enough, and you’re okay not going back for more and more like in the old days!

That’s it. The CALP diet is one step beyond this, it doesn’t allow any gum or mints or soda or artificial sweeteners. These release insulin the same as food, and will mess up what you are trying to do. You can have these items during your RM.

Overall this is a very flexible diet that fits well into the real world. The people here all have their own ways of making the diet work for them. Look at their losses! This WOE works wonders. (On your psyche, too! No deprivation!)

This thread is where all us CAD people hang out and discuss. Hopefully they will all come in and introduce themselves soon, tell you what works for them, how long they’ve been at it and how much they have lost.

LURKERS, PLEASE JOIN US! DON’T BE SHY!

If I have missed or misconstrued anything, please post!

Hi Everyone! Since it's almost summer, we really should have a new thread! Thanks for mentioning it, Cindy!

Today was my official weigh in and I am down another 2.4 lbs. I also had a great bike ride although it was slower than usual due to being quite windy out! Got some good hill work and some good miles!

I'm starting to gear up for my gallbladder surgery next week. Not too much more cleaning to do and then I can do some cooking ahead to have things ready.

Wow, I can't believe that it's time for a new thread. This year is absolutely flying by.

Yesterday I got all my veggies planted in the topsy turvy upside down tomato planter, and the plug and grow bag that I got. So everything is growing in soil, off the ground! I have big planters with broccoli, watermelon, and green beans, but once my green beans get a good root ball on them I will transfer them to the plug and grow bag as well, so I can keep everything together. Took a good long time to get them all planted, too.

I am feeling pretty lousy right now, mostly tired, though. I don't feel quite so "cold-y" though, so I'm wondering if it's allergies. Heck I don't know.. I'm just ready to start feeling better.

Tomorrow we are taking our son to his kindergarten readiness test. I know he'll do well because he is so smart; I'd say he's reading at probably second-grade level already and he's not quite 5. He scares me, he's so smart! So I hope they say he's ready for Kindergarten... the birthday cutoff for this school district is August 1st and his b-day is the 11th.. so for 10 days they won't put him in public K. So we have found a private K to put him in...

Okay ladies I am done for today. Still deciding on my RM. Talk to you tomorrow!

Hi, I'm checkin' in!!!

Cindy, excuse my naiveness but I thought your surgery was going to give you instant weight loss like "cutting off the fat". Could you explain? Was it just "folding and tucking and pulling the skin tighter"? I can't believe how much you are eating at your rm and not gaining without even a whisper of exercise! That just proves how CAD really works like a charm.

Today was a weird rm. I had 8 oz. of cheese, 2 apples, Reesees pb cups, snickers, Mt. Dew. I really feel fine but missed my "meal". Sort of a snacky type rm today. I am full for the day though still.

Hi Judy, are you still CADing? Do you chat on the other CAFriends board anymore. How are all the gals over there doing. Is Cil still there and has she lost to her goal? How about Barb? Has she made it to goal? I enjoyed that board until I got slammed for my one meal a day. I really enjoy CAD/one meal. It is too bad that they couldn't accept me for that.

Hi Oriana,
No, I'm not still with that group. It wasn't very active when I was last on it and I don't know how the folks are doing.
As I remember it, you didn't get slammed as much for your one meal, as you did for the fact that there was not much balance, and you were perceived by Barb as being anorexic. I don't think she faulted you for not losing "her way" but she was concerned for your unhealthy choices. Now, one could not possibly eat her way (or we wouldn't want to) but that worked for her. She did want folks to do more of a balanced meal. She doesn't have contact with the Hellers the last time I heard.
That's the way I remember it. If I'm wrong, just tell me.
Hope it's a good night for you.
Judy

Alright, Linda!!! Thank you for the new thread.....we are yaky, aren't we!! I didn't realize it had gotten so big!

Oriana, ya, me too, I do eat too too too much of junk at my meal and I'm suprised I'm not gaining too! Hun, they did cut off the extra skin and no you usually don't lose all that much, maybe the skin that they cut off was around 5 or 7 pounds, but I'm so swollen, that it makes up for it. What the difference is, is if I was wearing a girdle and having a tight mid section, well now I have the girdle effect with my own skin, so no more muffin tops, I can wear tight tops and it all looks good. I'm so happy I had it done, but the post op was a B***TCH, But I'm past that pretty much now and I'm just waiting for the swelling to go down and that could take a few months more, it's o.k., nobody notices the swelling except me, so I'm o.k. with it. I just want to know where I'll end up size wise, in jeans. I'm buying 6 and 4's but, I think I'll have to lose 15 more to get into the 4's. I'm going for 30 more, or until I'm satisfied with how I look. It's one meal for me for life, I love it so much, I'll never have to worry about gaining it all back, at last!!!!

Oh, did I mention I did an hour on my bike.... It was a really slow pace, but I did it!! Now I want to try my watp and see how that goes.

It's movie time, I'll see you all tomorrow!!!

Thank you, Patty, I hope I feel better soon, too! Hang in there; it'll get better for you!

Cindy
, yay for you!! It sounds like you are over the worst of it. I can't imagine being a size 4 or 6 but I'm a lot taller than you. I think I will always have the muffin top though... even back when I was skinny skinny I still had the tummy pooch! I think after hearing what you and what Patty's daughter have gone through postop I will just live with it though. I don't care much for pain..

WB Judy. Nice to have you back! I'm still hanging out with the "bunch of losers" but I'm just a maintainer at this point.. it works for me.

Hi Stephanie, have you found us here yet?

Hello to Teri, DressageLover, Barbara, Tink, Linda, oriana, mkeysmommy, Lucille, mmorris! If I have forgotten anybody please forgive me. It's still really early (or really late depending on if you have been to bed yet!) Off to work... y'all have a great day!

Good Morning Everyone!
Scale down another pound - 154.5! yay! Another couple before NY and I'll be thrilled - 9 days till I fly so that feels attainable - and no other special events between now and then except for Mother's day which I get together with another friend who no longer has her mom here and we have brunch in their honor -but that will be my RM that day anyway. Things seem to be moving for me now, my body must be adjusting and willing to let go - I almost don't want to jinx it by saying that!!

Barbara - What a gorgeous picture - I just noticed it was a new one!

Cindy - I know size doesn't matter as long as I feel good - but I'm envious that you're into those single digit sizes - so funny how weight works - I'm taller than you by a couple of inches and only a few pounds higher, but I'm still in size 14, just getting into 12 jeans. 10's I can squeeze into but wouldn't wear in public - using them as my measure for inches coming off. Congrats on all of your work paying off!

Have a great day everyone else - must hit the shower to get ready for work now! Catch you later - Tink

I had to get back on my pump inhibitor last night. I have been so sick for a few days now. I can't worry to much about the weight thing anymore. On too many meds... I am just going to be happy with who I am and leave it to that. I can't do the 1 meal a day anymore because I have too much stomach acid and I get sick, so I am trying not to eat too much.
Anyway, I wanted to let you girls know what is going on..

Patty,
Don't worry about this for awhile. If you are like I am, when you do return to watching it, you will choose a CAD type program. I know that I try to watch portions, I try to count WW points, I try this and I try that but it always comes back to the control one gets of blood sugar and the loss of cravings on CAD or CALP. There is no reason for you to feel that you are a failure if you can't hold it to one meal a day. Some can and thrive on it. For others of us, it is not our cup of tea.
You just take care of Patty and we are here for you...as you always are for the rest of us.
Hugs,
Judy

Good morning,

Linda, you are doing so well. You are losing weight, bicycling, and preparing for your down time after your surgery. You should be very proud of yourself!

Dana, when DH and I went plant shopping a few days ago we were looking at the veggies too. We are talking about putting some planters on our deck so we can grow fresh veggies. We can't plant the veggies in the ground because the ground squirrels are too much of a problem. I am curious about the plug and grow bag, is it the one that is advertised on TV? Would you mind taking the time to tell me a little about them? It doesn't sound like it will be too difficult for your son to be able to enter kindergarten, but I wish you good luck anyway!

Judy, I hope you were able to find your way back today. I don't care how much you want to do something, if you are not in the right frame of mind it makes it very difficult to get it done. Of course, these "bunch of losers" can be very motivating!

orianna, the CAFriends support group seems to focus on CALP and balancing your meals. I have posted a couple of my "one meal a day" menus and have never heard anything negative about them.

Barbara, thank you for sharing another lovely picture with us. I bet you are feeling pretty good about yourself these days.

Tink, I am happy you are getting closer to your NY goal and think you are doing a great job.

Patty, I am ignorant about what a "pump inhibitor" is so I don't know what to say. I am going to guess that it is not good and hope you will be feeling better soon.

I have been curious about my weight the last few weeks and finally stepped on the scale this morning. I have not been on a scale for a few years but know that I was close to my highest weight of 236 by the clothes I was able to wear. I am going to update my stats with my beginning weight at 236 even though it may not be accurate. This morning my weight was at 218 but I knew I was getting closer to 200 lbs. because of the way my clothes are fitting me now.

I really love this WOE and have not had any temptations in any way since I am not depriving myself at all. I love my food choices and am thankful that DH makes them so tasty.

Yesterday when I was doing my WATP power walk, I could have continued past my two mile mark but chose to watch and see what it looked like. Tomorrow I am going to go past my two mile mark and see how close I can get to the three mile mark. Tonight is Bowflex so when DH gets home from work, we will get our two sets completed.

My menu for yesterday included:

CM: 2 cups of coffee

CM: Rib eye steak and sliced cucumber

RM: Salad w/ranch, avocado, bacon bits, colby cheese, & sauteed shrimp

I took my Chromium and drank my water.

A Pump Inhibitor stops acid from forming in your stomach. It actually shuts it off. The trouble is that you don't digest your food as quickly so therefor you tend to gain weight, but I am hoping that in time my body will adjust to it and I will see some losses.

Thank you for wishing me well. You are so right about having the right frame of mind...and I do today. It's been good so far and such a relief. We are eating out tonight and I'm having a salad with chicken on it since I had my RM at lunch.

Hi Everyone! Just finished a long bike ride - 31.33 miles today! It was a good ride but got too windy and hot during the last 10 miles so that part was a challenge!

Patty, take care of yourself! Your health is more important than anything else.

Nice to see everyone doing well! I have to rush off again to get the camper closed. We had it open to get ready to sell but then I realized DH took the camera with him so I couldn't get any pictures to get it on Craigslist. Rain is forecast for tonight and I don't want it open when it's raining.
