Allies Exercising Around the World - May Challenge

Hello Allies and to another month of our challenge as we exercise around the world! We already made it cross-country from NY to L.A., now we're nearly halfway to Hawaii!! Then we'll continue until we cover the world. We welcome anyone who wants to join us. It's never too late to join in!

Here's how we do it: We are committed to eating right (whatever our LC plan), exercising, drinking our water, and working on our body image. To get from one location to another, we're logging our exercise miles like this:
whether you go to the gym, take exercise classes, work out at home, walk vigorously or bike ride outside, or do whatever gets you moving --
10 minutes = 1 mile. Or you can post your actual mileage per the treadmill, bike, elliptical, etc. For example, if I take a 60 minute class, that equals 6 miles. If I also do the elliptical and the control panel shows 2 miles, I've done a total workout of 8 miles. We just add our miles to the last person's. It's easy to get the hang of it. You'll see with our subsequent posts.

Good Morning Allies and welcome to May!!!!! My goodness, is it already May? Where does the time go? My goals for May - Continue to work on firming and toning both my legs and abs, drink at least 3 ltr of water every day (water becomes an issue now that it is getting HOT), work on body and image and focus on the positive changes rather than what still needs work. And i am not bothered with the scale this month. I may weigh myself occassionally but I REFUSE to obsess over a number.

Got in a good workout yesterday - cardio/abs/upper body. Then jumped on my bike and went up to the exchange to collect the child support. I told DH if I take the car I lose my parking here (and I got good parking near the door yesterday), I won't be able to find parking there and I won't find parking here when I get back! So I'm adding 2 miles for that. I'm planning on step/abs/lower body this afternoon and then a nice long bike ride in the morning!

Good Morning Allies. No bike ride for me this morning. DH didn't get home last night until about 1:30 so he wanted to sleep this morning. The weather is very hot nd humid anyway. We probably won't take the kids to the park this afternoon as the forecast is saying high of 39C (100F)!!!!!

Did do my workout yesterday, though! Step/abs/lowerbody. I changed the lower body workout lst week nd I'm relly feeling it! That's a good thing!

I have to work tomorrow and then we have dd's birthday party and I still haven't been shopping! Gotta make the cake today. She wants carrot cake!

Hi Allies,

It does seem like a busy time for everybody! I know I've been swamped with work, house projects, social commitments, etc. It seems to never end. On a positive note, spring has arrived full-force and it's absolutely beautiful here. So you know I'm in a good mood.

Maryam: I'm glad you're still going strong! How was DD's bday?

I have a few miles to add from Saturday, but have to run. I'll be back tomorrow night. I hope everyone is doing well!!!!

Good Morning Allies. Very busy at work, still. FAA will be here all week. So far, so good. No major findings. Al hamdu lillah. Back is really hurting. Probably tomorrow I will go to the doctor. Tonight I have an orthodontist appointment. New housemaid is suppose to be here tomorrow.

Step/abs/lower body yesterday. Planning to do cardio/abs/upper body this afternoon before my appointment.

Jillian - Birthday was nice. We got her a mobile phone and she is delighted with it! She's been wanting one for a long time bt I have always told them they can't have a phone until they are 12.

Sandy - Glad you got moved ok. Have you checked out the nearby gym?

Hi Allies,

I'm glad to see most of the gang is back together! I've been so busy with work I can barely catch my breath. I'm working on the season brochure for a local theater (writing and overseeing production) and launching a new PR campaign for a locally-based, but national magazine. I enjoy both projects, but they're very time-consuming.

The best news is that I'm back in my office! I'm sitting in a gorgeous red room with glossy white trim. The ceiling, which was cracked from old water damage, is looking brand-new and perfect. The room is even more beautiful than I expected. My plaster guy is coming back on Thursday because he wants to build a shelf over the radiator and wants to talk to me about doing built-ins. He's as excited about this room as I am! Next I have to decide on my new computer and redecorate. I'm so excited! When it's all finished, I'll take a photo to show you.

Kissa: Good job getting back to the gym!

Maryam: Great new photo! You're looking more fit and firm all the time! One of these days, I'll take a good body shot and post it. I'm not as buff as you, but I'm working on it!

Sandy: I'm so glad you're moved and getting settled in. I hope you'll be very happy there!

I have some miles to post from yesterday. Unfortunately, I injured my toe last night and am trying to stay off that foot until I see the podiatrist tomorrow. I have a history of problems with that foot so I've got to be careful and won't be back to the gym until I get the go-ahead. Please add some miles for me!

Hi Allies,

Well I went to the podiatrist today and he said I need to take it easy for a few days and let it heal. So it looks like I'll be focusing on upper body work for a while. I'll go to Muscle Up tomorrow night and do what I can and pass on step class this week.

I've been thinking about my goals for May and I think I should focus on maintaining, getting my work projects in order and my office redecorated. I'd love to lose a couple of lbs this month, but it's unlikely given that I have to cut back on my exercise. I will try to focus on building a positive self-image and I'm still looking for effective ways to do this. It sure is an uphill battle!!!

I hope you're all doing well and just too busy to post. I'll see you all soon.

Off to do a 45 minute aerobic class any second, I have at last managed to drop a couple of pounds, I am always very impatient when I do strict induction. I can often loose that on a week of clean maintainance. Never mind, it has started now and will hopefully continue.

Hey Allies! Sorry I have MIA. Finlly went to the doctor about my back. She put me on 3 days sick leave. No sitting or standing for long periods, no working out. But this morning I got up early and went for a bike ride with DH. Ws nice but looks like bike riding may be coming to an end. Was warm but the humidity is way up so feels hot, sticky and very uncomfortable outside.

Jillian - Take care of that foot.

Maryam Did the bike ride bother your back? Take care, backs are tricky. Love the avi with your little dd peeking through!

I got the theater's season brochure under control, so I can pop in and say hello. It's been crazy busy. It sounds like you're all in the same boat!

My foot feels better, but I have to watch it. I feel like a slug not working out. I did a little upper body work, so I'll claim 1 little mile. I never thought I'd be eager to get back to the elliptical!

Sandy: Let us know about the gym. I hope it works out!

Maryam: I hope your back is feeling better! (By the way, it's cold and rainy here today, so hot and humid doesn't sound so bad right now.)

Good Morning Allies. Back is still aching. I go back to the doctor today to get the results of the exrays and all the blood tests. I already told her I don't want to take medicine to treat the pain, I want to FIX whatever is causing the pain!

Got DD's visa done - remember she lost her passport so I had to replace the passport and then replace the residence visa stamp in the passport! Dh and I spent most of my time off fixing stuff at home. We got one hot heater replaced - here instead of one hot water heater for the whole place, we have seperate small hot water heaters for each bathroom and kitchen. We got leakiy toilet pipes in my bathroom fixed and we got the leaking a/c under control. So far so good, insha'allah!

I walked with the kids up to the arts and crafts store twice this weekend - they were closed the first time - so I'm claiming 2 miles. They start exams this weeks and then next week they are finished so we wanted to get their summer projects sorted out. The girls are going to try making boxes and vases and stuff with all the seashells we have and the boys both chose latch hook rugs!

Jillian - Glad things are finally settling down for you! ITA on not working out! I can just feel myself turning into a couch potato! I'm back to my regular routine today - step/abs/lower body! You want warm weather? We are looking forward to a high of 109F and 40% humidity today!!!!!

Sandy - So glad you are settled in. Hope the gym is a good one! And thanks! That's my youngest DD and my biggest fan!

Good Morning Allies. Hope you all had a lovely Mother's Day and got pampered! Good news - My new housemaid did finally arrive. So far she seems to very hardworking, polite and pleasant. She has lots of experience so I don't have to teach her to cook or anything! Nice to not have to work so hard!!!

Did workout yesterday but wasn't able to finish. My dear friend showed up on my doorstep in tears. She is having severe marital problems. She has been telling me for months that her DH is acting strangely, violent at times, very moody and NEVER wants to have sex (this is a man who thought 3 times a day was insufficient last year!) He has even gone so far as to tell her pack and get out, piss off, and I'll give you till the weekend to get your stuff and get out!!!!! The next day he is telling her he loves her and can't live without her. Well we finally figured it out. He is smoking crack. And it appears that the habit is getting worse. So I had to console her. I did get the step and abs done. I'm planning to do cardio/abs/upper body today.

Back still aching but the test show nothing serious going on. I told the doctor I don't like to take medicine so she put me on Glucosamine for 3 months. She says studies have shown very good results with no side effects.

Hi Allies,

All is well here. Mother's Day was really nice. We went for brunch and DH and DD spoiled me with flowers and presents. The best part was spending the day together. We have had non-stop rain here, so that's a drag, but it's supposed to clear up tomorrow.

Work is still busy, but more manageable. I'm trying to do a week's worth of work in three days because I'm going to NY on Thursday for my father's bday.

I'm still feeling like a slug from lack of exercise. I'm going to my Muscle Up class shortly and will do whatever I can. I'll be back afterwards to post my miles.

Maryam: Take care of that back. I hope the Glucosamine works!
The situation with your friend's husband sounds horrible. She's lucky she can come to you for support. I had a friend in an abusive marriage who never wanted to talk about it, but always looked miserable. She and her husband ended up moving out of the country and we rarely hear from her. It's very sad, but you can't help someone who won't talk or listen -- or even admit there's a problem.

I'm back to post my miles. I made it through the whole class, just modifying some of the lower body moves to keep stress off my bad foot. I feel so much better now!!!!!!

Good Morning Allies! Got in my workout yesterday cardio/abs/upper body. My friend came and did her roots and talked to me while I worked out. I think she is just at the point that she refuses to care anymore. 15 years of this is more than enough. She is just so mad that it took her 15 years to figure out that he was a druggie!!!

This afternoon planning to do step/abs/lower body. But my back is really hurting today so I may just have to do what I can do.

Jillian - Glad you had a lovely Mother's Day and finally made it back to your Muscle Up class!!!!

Maryam Glad to hear your maid has finally arrived. What a shock about your friend's husband! This may be naive, but I hadn't thought about UAE having problems with drugs. Duh! I guess crack is available everywhere unfortunately. She's lucky to have you for support. Hope your doc figures out how to fix your back. I'm with you on the fixing the problem VS drugs for the pain. But on the other hand I hate pain!!

Jillian Sounds like work is under control. Unless now that you're done the theatre brochure you have another looming deadline.... Take care of your foot! Did you injure it at the gym?

Kissa How are things?

Well the gym looks great! Opens really early (5ish I think!) until 11pm and it's just a 5 minute walk! Reasonable rates and we will sign the contract tomorrow!!


My pants feel tight, but I don't want to get on the scale. I WON'T do it!

Things are good otherwise, I started a course so that I can work in a daycare ( I need to get out of the restaurant industry!), and our new place/neighbourhood is hip.

Today I power walked to the library and back, so I'll add 3 miles.

Good Morning Allies. Hope everyone is well and happy today. I think summer is officially here!! The forecasted high for today is 109F and 54% humidity!!!! The humidity is already high and I'm feeling sticky and gross!

Back is really aching this morning but I did get through my workout yesterday. Seems to be worse in the morning. I am going to do a search on the NET and find some exercises to help lower back pain. The ones I'm doing obviously aren't helping the problem.

Kids are all off school tomorrow to prepare for exams starting next week. 6days of exams and then they are out for the summer! But I got them all set up for summer project so that should keep them busy, at least for awhile!

Planning to do cardio/abs/upper body this afternoon.

Sandy - Good to hear from you! I'm so glad the gym is going to work out! ITA - stay away from the scale until you have time to get back into a good exercise routine! Changing careers sounds like fun! But child care?!!! I always admire people who can deal with large groups of small children!!!

Sorry I have been MIA again. More company, from Friday to Monday then drove down here to our Devon home yesterday, today just shopping and settling in, tomorrow back to the gym. Promise.

You have all been doing so well, especially considering your back Maryam.

The pounds came back and on Monday I decided to eat the gorgeous Papaya I was preparing for my friends and DH. It got me thinking that I should look at Intuitive Eating again.

I am giving it a go as I was really stuck on the 134/6 lbs and I like to be 124/6. Summer is a great time for fruit too and I was craving more than just berries. You do something similar don't you Maryam? Eat only when you are hungry, eat what you really want, enjoy every mouthful, slowly and stop as soon as you begin to feel truly satisfied.
